Introduction
Introduction
This is an instruction manual for model SSD-α10, an ultrasound diagnostic instrument.
Read the manual carefully before using the instrument. Take special note of the items in Chapter
1, "Safety Precautions.".
Keep this manual securely for future reference.
Symbols Used in this Document
The following items are important in preventing harm or injury to equipment operator or patient.
There are four levels of harm/damage that can be caused by ignoring instructions/displays or
using the equipment incorrectly: "Danger," "Warning," "Caution," and "Note."
These types are indicated by the following symbols.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that will result in the death of or
serious injury to the equipment operator.
Indicates a hazardous situation that could result in death or serious injury.
Indicates a hazardous situation that may result in slight or moderate injury, or
property damage.
Indicates a request concerning an item that must be observed in order to
prevent damage or deterioration to the equipment and also to ensure effective
use.
Cautions use the following graphics.
This mark indicates and alert, additional information.
This mark indicates that the action is not allowed.
This mark indicates that the action is required.

Introduction
About the model “SSD-α10”
The SSD-α10 is intended to be used by doctors and other qualified personnel in fracture
diagnostics and hemodynamic diagnostics.
However, this equipment is not designed to be used in ophthalmic ultrasound diagnosis, as its
sound intensity is not compliant with ophthalmic restrictions established by the FDA.
Only physicians and other qualified personnel should operate this equipment for diagnostic
purposes. Read section 1-1 of the Safety Instruction.

PRECAUTIONS Concerning the Use/Management of the SSD-α10
•
Do not disassemble, repair or remodel this equipment or optional features without our
consent.
NOTE:
Disassemble means to remove the parts or options from the equipment
using tools.
NOTE:
Remodel means to install or connect unauthorized parts or equipment
including the power cord.
•
Assembly of the equipment or optional accessories shall be performed by a third party
certified by us. Please contact one of our offices listed on back cover.
NOTE:
Assemble means to install or connect parts or optional accessories in/to the
device using tools.

Transporting this equipment (by vehicle/ship) shall be performed by a third party certified
by the manufacturer. Please contact one of our offices listed on back cover.

Please conduct routine cleaning and inspection of the equipment. Refer to Chapter 5 of the
Safety Instruction for details.
•
Ensure that the output level of the scan conforms to the required duration of diagnosis.
•
If any malfunction or abnormality is discovered during operation of the equipment, remove
the probe from the patient immediately and discontinue use. If any abnormality is observed
in the patient, provide proper care as quickly as possible. Refer to Chapter 4 of the Safety
Instructions for more information on dealing with the equipment appropriately. If the
malfunction is not listed in Chapter 4 of the Safety Instruction manual, contact one of our
offices listed on back cover.
PRECAUTIONS for the SSD-α10 Installation
This equipment is a electrical medical device that intended for use in hospitals and
research facilities. The device should be installed in accordance with the following
guidelines.

Install in accordance with Chapter 3 of the Safety Instructions.

Install in an environment that conforms to the operating environments indicated in section
2-2-2 of the Safety Instruction manual.
•
Install in an environment that ensures electromagnetic compatibility, in accordance with
section 1-2-6 of the Safety Instruction manual, "Precautions Concerning the Maintenance
of Electromagnetic Compatibility," and Item 1-3, "Guidelines for Electromagnetic
compatibility."
NOTE:
The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of device to function
satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable
electromagnetic disturbance to anything in that environment.

Operating the Various Switches
Operating instructions of each switch are explained below.
1-3-1. ACOUSTIC POWER
The ACOUSTIC POWER function enables the acoustic power to be manually adjusted from the automatic setting.
<Operation method>
(1)
Press the ACOUSTIC POWER switch.
(2)
Using rotary encoder 4, adjust the output to the optimum value.

Turning rotary encoder 4 clockwise causes the output to increase, and vice versa. At the same time, the
output value on the image changes.
Press the ACOUSTIC POWER switch to finish this function.
1-3-2. B GAIN
The B GAIN knob adjusts the sensitivity of the B mode image.
The sensitivity (gain) can be varied between 10 and 90 dB, and is displayed on the screen.
[Remark]
You can set the gain at startup by means of a preset, however depending upon the conditions of the probe, and so
on, the gain may not always match the dB value displayed on the screen.
<Operation method>

Turn the knob counterclockwise or clockwise.

Turning the knob clockwise increases the image sensitivity, and vice versa.
While observing an image, adjust the sensitivity to a suitable level.

1-3-4. CURSOR/B.L.S
The CURSOR/B.L.S. function moves or sets the cursor and the baseline of the Doppler pattern.
<CURSOR>
<Operation method>

Press the M switch to change over from the 1B mode display to the B/M mode display.

The CURSOR/B.L.S switch is lighted in orange, and the cursor is displayed on the B mode image.
Using the trackball, move the cursor to the position where you wish to detect the M mode.
[Remark]
The method of operating the cursor in the B/D mode is the same as the description above.
The cursor cannot be moved when the B/M(B/D) image is frozen.
<B.L.S. (BASE LINE SHIFT)>
By shifting the baseline, the Doppler pattern can be displayed without the aliasing.
<Operation method>
(1)
Press the PW switch to change over from the 1B mode display to the B/D mode display.

The CURSOR/B.L.S switch is lighted in orange, and a cursor is displayed on the B mode image.
(2)
Adjust the position of the baseline with rotary encoder 4.

Press the CURSOR/B.L.S switch.

The baseline is reset at the center position.

1-3-5. DEPTH/RANGE
The DEPTH/RANGE function switches over the display depth of the image.
The display depth is switched over based on the transmission point of the displayed image.
The depth is common to both the B and M mode images. The display depth that was last set remains, even if the
mode changes.
You cannot change the display depth of a frozen image.
<Operation method>
: If you press the switch lever upward, a displayed depth becomes shallow.
(The image is getting enlarged.)
The least depth is obtained by pressing this switch continuously until the depth no longer decreases.
: If you press the switch lever downward, a displayed depth becomes deepened.
(The image is getting reduced)
The greatest depth is obtained by pressing the switch continuously until the depth no longer increases.
1-3-6. ENTER
This function changes over the control function when you are controlling various functions with the trackball.
It is used mainly when inputting a measurement, a preset, a review, and comments.
<Operation method>
Example: Performing measurement

1-3-7. FLOW GAIN

1-3-8. FOCUS
The FOCUS function converges the ultrasound beam to make a clearer image.
A focal point can be changed when the ultrasound beam is transmitted.
B mode image has transmitting points F1 to F16 that divide the maximum diagnostic distance in the distance direction into sixteen parts. You can set the focus at up to any four of these points. (Some probes have transmitting points
from F1 to F8.)
In the case of an M mode image, one optimum focal point is set near the center of the display range. (The display
range varies with the display depth and the M-WINDOW.) The above also applies when only an M mode image is
displayed.
In the case of a B/D mode display, one focal point is set according to the sample volume. (Only when you set the
Auto)
Also, when an M mode image or a D mode image in a B/* mode display is frozen, you can perform multi-stage focus
setting.
[Remark]
You cannot set all focal points to OFF. One points is always set as a focal point.
<Operation method>
Select the auto focus or the manual focus on the menu.
For details, refer to Section 5. "Touch Panel".

The transmission focus position can be set.
Using the trackball, move the transmission focus position.

Rolling the trackball up moves the transmission focus position to the shallow depth point, and rolling
the trackball down moves the transmission focus position to the deep depth point.

When focusing at two or more points on the AUTO focus, you can change the distance between the focal points by
using rotary encoder 4.

The focus position can not go outside the displayed depth in AUTO focus.
[Remark]
After changing the focus position to any place in AUTO focus, changing the depth with the DEPTH/RANGE switch
changes the focus position to the optimum position according to the changed depth.
[Remark]
In Manual focus, the focus position can go to the maximum depth that the probe has. It is also possible to change the
setting so that the changing the depth does not change the focus position.

1-3-9. FREEZE
The FREEZE function freezes a moving image.
When you press the FREEZE switch, the B mode image freezes upon the completion of one ultrasound wave scan,

Also, the date and time indication and probe transmission stop.

In order to protect the instrument, you can set the instrument so that the freeze condition automatically goes ON
when you do not perform a panel operation for a certain period. (You can set this period to between 1 and 20 minutes
using a preset. You can also turn this function OFF when you wish to use the monitor for a long period.
For details, refer to Section 6. "PRESET".)
By connecting an optional foot switch, you can turn the freeze function ON and OFF using either the FREEZE
switch or the foot switch.

Press the FREEZE switch.

The switch is lighted in orange, and the displayed image freezes.
Press the FREEZE switch.

The switch is lighted in green, and the frozen image becomes a real time image.
1-3-10. M/D GAIN
M mode : This control is used to perform auxiliary adjustment of the M mode image sensitivity after the B mode
image sensitivity has been adjusted with the B GAIN control.
D mode : Used to adjust the intensity of the spectrum display on Doppler images.
[Remark]
You can set the gain at startup by means of a preset, however depending upon the conditions of the probe, and so
on, the gain may not always match the dB value displayed on the screen.
<Operation method>
(1)
Turn the knob counterclockwise or clockwise.

Turning the knob clockwise increases the image sensitivity, and vice versa.
While observing an image, adjust the sensitivity to a suitable level.
