Introduction These care instructions are intended for operators when using Arjo Lead/Acid batteries only and the instructions are designed to compliment the operating instructions issued for your ARJO lifter. When using ARJO lifters please ensure that you are familiar with these care instructions and all other operating instructions relating to ARJO lifters, chargers and ancillary equipment.

ARJO Lead/Acid battery packs are designed specifically for your ARJO lifter and are robustly constructed from high impact resistance plastic. Each pack contains valve regulated lead acid type (VRLA) batteries and require the minimum amount of care to maintain their working efficiency. Your battery pack is an integral and necessary part of your ARJO lifter. The effective use and life expectancy of your battery will be greatly enhanced if the following protocol is respected. With a fully charged battery pack it is possible to complete from between twenty and one hundred complete lifting cycles, with a patient, this will depend on which ARJO lifter is being used, the weight of the patient and the age and condition of the battery. Recharging a battery pack before it reaches a low state of charge will prolong its life. Lead acid batteries are classified as consumable items which means that the number of lifts from a fully charged battery pack will gradually reduce with age. Your ARJO battery pack works at maximum efficiency at 20ºC (68ºF) (normal room temperature) at higher temperatures the battery will appear less efficient and take longer to charge. For battery charging instructions always refer to the specific operating instructions for your lifter and any separate ARJO battery charging instructions (if applicable). Some information contained in these instructions may become outdated, due to improvements made to this product in the future. If you have any questions regarding these instructions or your lifter, please contact ARJO or their approved distributor. ARJO’s policy is one of continuous development, and therefore reserves the right to change specifications without notice.

C Battery Charging Protocol

When first received charge the battery for a minimum of twenty four hours.

Alternatively if you wish to use your own rotational system, you could use the blank adhesive stickers and mark accordingly.

To maximise the longevity of the battery and charger it is best practice to always disconnect the charger from the main electrical supply before inserting or removing the battery from the charger.

Do not continue to operate your ARJO lifter with the low battery warning light illuminating, unless in an emergency, as this will greatly reduce the life of the battery pack.

Always thoroughly read and understand the lifter operating instructions and any separate battery charging instructions before charging the battery pack.

Always provide a fully charged battery pack for the following work shift regardless of the number of lifts that have been performed, this will ensure maximum battery life and optimal lift performance.

Once fully charged and in use the battery should be recharged at either:-

The simple icon self adhesive label provided with this booklet may be removed and positioned at a convenient location, close to the battery charger for example, as a reminder to staff about the importance of regular and sequential charging protocol.

A. The end of every work shift or B. When the low battery warning light illuminates, or C. Daily - as a minimum. Whichever occurs first.

Handling of Batteries

Always charge the battery pack for at least eight hours.

Be careful not to drop batteries as they could cause personal injury or become damaged.

Every seven days leave the battery on charge for a minimum of fifteen hours to maximise longevity of battery.

Do not drop the battery onto a hard surface this can damage the cells and components inside, even if the plastic casing looks undamaged dropping the battery may result in poor or no performance at all.

Note: The battery pack may be left connected to the charger unit when it is fully charged without being damaged by overcharging, there is no maximum time limit. This will also ensure the battery is kept fully charged.

Storage of batteries

A simple battery management protocol suggestion is to allocate two or three battery packs for each lifter, identify each battery pack by marking with one of the different stickers provided with this booklet, illustrated below:P1350a, b, c

Morning (optional)

If storing a battery pack for any length of time it is very important to fully recharge the battery before storage, and charge again before use. To prolong shelf life without intermittent charging store battery packs cool, ideally at 10ºC (50ºF) or less, but not below -40ºC (-40ºF). Keep the battery packs away from direct sunlight and heat sources e.g. radiators, elevated ambient temperatures above 30ºC (86ºF) will shorten service life of batteries.

Disposal of Batteries Always dispose of batteries in a responsible manner, to protect the environment contact your local authority for advice and disposal provisions for lead acid batteries.

General Safety Practices For battery packs Only use the charger unit supplied with the lifter. Do NOT charge battery packs in a sealed container. Do NOT place batteries near, or dispose of, in a fire. Do NOT place battery packs in close proximity to objects that produce sparks or flames. Do NOT short circuit a battery. Do NOT store batteries at temperatures in excess of 40°C (140°F). Do NOT charge or store battery packs in the presence of inflammable anaesthetic gases. Do NOT crush, puncture, open, dismantle or otherwise mechanically interfere with batteries. Should the battery casing become cracked, and electrolyte come into contact with skin or clothing, wash immediately with water. If the electrolyte contacts the eyes, wash immediately with copious amounts of water, and seek medical attention. When disposing of battery packs and/or batteries, contact the appropriate local authority for advice.

ARJO recommends that the battery be charged every 7 days for 15 hours. This will maximize the longevity of the battery.

Note: The battery pack may be left connected to the charger unit when it is fully charged, without being damaged by overcharging. There is no maximum time limit.
