Foreword Thank you for purchasing ArjoHuntleigh equipment. Your Bolero lift bath trolley is part of a series of quality products designed especially for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care use. We are dedicated to serving your needs and providing the best products available along with training that will bring your staff maximum benefit from every ArjoHuntleigh product. Please contact us if you have any questions about the operation or maintenance of your ArjoHuntleigh equipment. Please read this manual thoroughly! Please read this manual in its entirety before using your Bolero lift bath trolley. Information in the manual is crucial to the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment, and will help protect your product and ensure that equipment performs to your satisfaction. Some of the information in this manual is important for your safety and must be read and understood to help prevent possible injury. ArjoHuntleigh strongly advise and warn that only ArjoHuntleigh designed parts, which are designed for the purpose, should be used on equipment and other appliances supplied by ArjoHuntleigh, to avoid injuries attributable to the use of inadequate parts. Unauthorized modifications on any ArjoHuntleigh equipment may affect its safety. ArjoHuntleigh will not be held responsible for any accidents, incidents or lack of performance that occur as a result of any unauthorized modification to its products. Service and Support Service should be performed regularly on your Bolero every year by ArjoHuntleigh qualified personnel to ensure the safety and daily operation of your product. See chapter Care and Preventive Maintenance.

Safety Instructions The equipment must be used in accordance with these safety instructions. Anyone using the equipment must also have read and understood the instructions in this manual. If there is anything you are not sure about, contact your ArjoHuntleigh representative.
WARNING Never leave the resident unattended at any time. Ensure that the resident does not pull or hold on to stable objects such as grab rails, sinks and other equipment at any time.
Intended use This equipment is intended for lifting and transporting residents to and from a bathroom in a care facility and to be used in an assisted bathing process. Bolero must be used by appropriately trained caregivers with adequate knowledge of the care environment, its common practices and procedures, and in accordance with the guidelines in the Operating and Product Care instructions. Any other use is prohibited. The equipment may only be used for the purpose specified here.
WARNING Before lifting Bolero out of the water after a bath, re-position the resident if needed to ensure that the resident is sitting upright in the centre of the chair!
NOTE All materials used in Bolero lift bath trolley complies with established biocompability standards and have been tested accordingly (ISO 10993-5).
Resident assessment We recommend that facilities establish regular assessment routines. Caregivers should assess each resident according to the following criteria prior to use: •
The resident’s weight should not exceed 136 kg (300 lbs).
•
The resident must be able to understand and respond to instructions to remain in a safe laying position on the stretcher or remain in such a position as a result of a limited physical capacity for movement.
If a resident does not meet these criteria an alternative lift shall be used. The expected life time of this equipment, unless otherwise stated, is ten (10) years, subject to preventative maintenance being carried out in accordance with the instructions for care and maintenance found in this manual.
NOTE Modifications made to the equipment without expressed written consent of ArjoHuntleigh will invalidate the supplier's product liability.

Warnings To avoid the possibility of injury always ensure that: •
the equipment is used by trained staff.
•
the mattress is properly attached.
•
Bolero is moved with care, especially in narrow passages, over bumps etc. and that the resident safety straps are secure.
When positioning Bolero, do not stay in the direction of the movement of the hand rest. An unexpected movement upwards, done by the resident, can injure the nurse. See illustration.
Battery charger safety practices:

Bolero should be moved in the correct direction, i.e. along the stretcher, during resident transportation. •

The charger is designed for dry areas only and for normal air humidity conditions.
•
Don’t expose the charger to water or dust.
•
The charger must not be covered.
Battery safety practices: •
Use only the charger supplied with the equipment.
Bolero is always driven in the intended direction. The Bolero has a lower stability in the non intended driving direction and can then tilt if provoked.
•
Do not charge a battery in a sealed compartment.
•
Be careful not to drop the battery.
•
Do not place a battery near a heat source or fire.
the stretcher is kept in a low level during transportation to achieve better stability.
•
Do not short-circuit the battery.
•
Do not store a battery at a temperature higher than 50 °C (122 °F).
•
Do not crush, puncture, open, dismantle or otherwise mechanically interfere with the battery.
•
Should the battery casing crack and cause contents to come in contact with skin or clothing, rinse immediately with water. If contents come in contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
•
Inhalation of the contents can cause respiratory irritation. Sensitivity of nickel can cause allergic asthma. Provide fresh air and medical attention.
•
that the resident is lying/sitting in the middle of the stretcher.
•
the castors and brakes work freely.
•
the castors are locked on Bolero during resident transfer from/to bed etc. and when Bolero is stationary.
•
bed castors are locked during resident transfer from/to bed.
•
the safety straps are in good condition and properly fastened.
•
all screws are tightened.
•
the lifting system is working smoothly (raising and lowering).
•
Contact the appropriate local authority for advice when disposing of batteries.
•
there are no sharp edges on parts coming in contact with residents.
•
Check labels on the battery.
•
Don’t expose the battery or charger to flames.
•
the cover over the back rest adjustment catch is in good condition and properly fastened.
•
Don’t expose the battery connector to water.
•
Bolero is not overloaded! The lifting capacity of the Bolero is 136 kg (300 lb.).
•
Don’t use the charger in presence of inflammable anaesthetic gases.

Preparations Actions before the first use
Actions before every use

Visually check the package for damage.

The package should be recycled according to local regulations.

Check that all parts of the product are supplied. Compare with the product description in this manual. If any part is missing or damaged - do not use the product!

Mounting of the enclosed spacer: The spacer that is mounted on Bolero when delivered, is adapted to the depth of ArjoHuntleigh Bath System. For deeper baths only. To get a deeper immersion, remove one of the two mounted spacer s on Bolero. See illustration. Be aware of damage of the surface of the tub.

Unpack the battery charger. See “installation and charging instructions”

Charge each battery for 24 hrs.

Clean the product according to ”cleaning instructions” on page 28 in this manual.

Prepare an area, dry with good ventilation for storage of the lift.

Choose a designed area, where the Instructions for Use should be kept, accessible at all times for the users.

Product description/function Battery charger (1) See separate Battery and battery charger instructions. Fix the battery charger to a suitable wall and connect it to a grounded wall socket. Type no: NDA1200-EU, NDA2200-GB, NDA4200-US, NDA6200-AU.
Manual raising and lowering (2) •
The stretcher is raised by using the hand pump. Pump evenly, using the full range of movement.
•
The stretcher is lowered by pressing the lowering button.
Electric raising and lowering (3) •
Unhook the hand control from its holder.
•
To raise Bolero, press the “up” arrow on the hand control button.
•
To lower Bolero press the “down” arrow.
Back rest and leg support (4 - 5) •
Bolero is symmetrical so that either end can be used as the back rest, depending on the orientation of the resident’s bed. To change the orientation of the trolley simply move the pillow to the other end (4).
•
Release one of the catches (5) and raise the side selected as back rest to the desired angle. Be sure the back rest is securely in place in catch.
WARNING There is a risk of getting squeezed in the catch. Keep this area free when raising/ lowering the back rest.

Handle bars (1) (not on paediatric versions) Bolero has two foldable handle bars as standard equipment. During transport and bath: •
Lower the handle bar that is placed at the longest distance from the resident’s waist.
Storage (2) •
When not used, store Bolero with the back rest and footrest (A) in their upper positions.
•
Raise the back rest and footrest. Check that the catches (B) are in place and that the rests are locked.
Adjustment of stretcher length (3) •
Shorten the stretcher: Undo the head/foot support (A) and the screws (B).
•
Turn the support(s) 180°. Fasten the head/foot support and the screws.

Mattresses (1) Always start from the edge of the side strip to attach/detach the mattress. •
Attach: Snap the edge of the side strip around the stretcher. Press and drag the palm along the side strip to fasten.
•
Detach: Undo the edge of the side strip. Pull and drag along the side strip to detach the mattress.
•
Middle part: Snap the side strip adjacent to the pillar round the stretcher. Stretch the mattress and snap the other side strip around to the other side of the stretcher.
•
First attach the side strip of the mattress round the side of the stretcher adjacent to the hydraulic pillar (A). Stretch the mattress and fasten the other side strip (B). Fix the mattress in place with the quick grips (C).
•
Fasten the pillow with the quick grips.
Safety straps (2) Bolero has two safety straps as standard equipment. The chest strap is attached to the knob on the side of the stretcher. Pass it over the resident’s chest, behind the back rest and attach to the knob in back. The hip strap is attached to the knob (A). Place it on the stretcher, over the resident’s hips and attach it to the knob in back (B).
Brakes (3) The castors will brake by pressing the castor lock tab (A) with your foot. The castors are released by pressing down the centre tab (B).
Scale (4)(optional) The scale is situated on the chassis. See the separate scale instruction.

Emergency Stop (1) If, for any reason, Bolero does not respond to the control buttons, you can quickly stop lift movement by pressing the button on the battery and disconnect it (1). Contact your local ArjoHuntleigh representative before reusing Bolero.
Emergency High/Low (2-3) If, for any reason, Bolero does not respond to the control buttons, raise or lower Bolero by using the Emergency High/Low. a
Unplug the hand control (2).

Control Bolero by pressing a blunt, thin object into the holes at the panel. (i.e. a pen) (3).
•
Press it into the hole next to the ”up arrow” in order to raise Bolero.
•
Press it into the hole next to the ”down arrow” in order to lower Bolero.
NOTE A continuous beeping sound is heard during action “up” and “down”.
Contact your local ArjoHuntleigh representative before re-using Bolero.
CAUTION Do not use an object with sharp tip when pressing in the holes.

Side Support (Accessory) Bolero can be equipped with a foldable side support. To facilitate the usage of the side support, the Velcro straps on the middle part of the mattress have to be cut. 1
When used, the side support is in its locked position directly opposite the pillar.

When not used the side support is attached to the bracket below the stretcher. To use the side support: Release it from its locked position.

Fold the side support below the stretcher.

Fasten the side support on the other side of Bolero by firmly pushing it into the holder.

To fold the side support back again: Grip the side support with one hand. With the other hand: Release the side support from its locked position by pulling the holder towards you (see figure). Fold it back below the stretcher and attach it to the bracket on the other side of the stretcher.
Always make sure the side support is securely attached to both of its two locked positions.

Transferring the resident From bed 1
Choose the appropriate end of Bolero to act as back support and fasten the pillow there.

Attach the hip strap to the knob and pass it straight over the stretcher so that it hangs over the floor. 3 Roll the resident to their side. 4 Move Bolero in over the bed as close as possible to the resident and lower so that it is resting firmly on the bed. 5 Brake both castors. 6 Roll the resident over onto the stretcher. 7 Raise the back rest to desired angle (with the back part of the bed if necessary). Check that the catch is in place and the back rest is locked. 8 Fasten the chest strap. 9 Raise the stretcher a little, pull out the hip strap and fasten it. Lower the handle bar. 10 Release the castor brakes and pull Bolero out from the bed. 11 Lower Bolero to a comfortable height and hold the transport handles during transport.
WARNING To avoid risk of injury, ensure the resident keeps his/her hands on the hand rest or towards the chest when raising, lowering and transporting a Bolero.
WARNING Always pay close attention to the resident during transferring, transport and bathing. To bed To transfer resident back to bed, perform “Transfer from bed” in reverse order.

Bathing the resident First read the separate instructions for your bath equipment.
NOTE Read safety instructions on page 5-6 before bathing.
WARNING To avoid risk of injury, ensure the resident keeps his/her hands on the hand rest or towards the chest when raising, lowering or transporting a Bolero. 1
Raise Bolero to clear the edge of the bath and move the resident in over the bath.

Brake the castors.

Raise the bath tub to a comfortable height, if bath tub is adjustable.
4
Lower Bolero so that it is resting against the bottom of the bath.

Remove the chest strap and loosen the hip strap.

Bathe the resident.

After bathing, fasten the hip strap and the chest strap. Lower the bath tub, so that Bolero is above the water and give the resident a quick shower.

After drying, release the castors and return the resident to their room on Bolero.
WARNING Never leave the resident unattended at any time, particularly when Bolero is in a raised position.
WARNING Before lifting Bolero out of the water after a bath, reposition the resident if needed to ensure that the resident is sitting upright in the centre of the stretcher

Battery and Battery charger Installation •
The battery charger is designed for dry surroundings and may not be installed in bathrooms or any other wet areas. Fix the battery holder to a suitable wall within reach from a standard power outlet where the charger is to be plugged in. Use four fixing screws (not enclosed) suitable for the wall and with documented capacity of load (1).

The battery charger is not allowed to be used in a highly trafficated area of the residents.
Low charge warning If the battery needs charging a buzzing tone is heard when the lift is activated. At this time, there will be enough battery power to complete the immediate task.
Maintenance •
The charger does not require any maintenance.
•
In case of a malfunction don’t attempt to open the charger-cover.
•
All repairs must be carried out by ArjoHuntleigh authorised personnel.
Charging batteries •
The charger converts mains voltage to low DC voltage.
•
The charger must only be used for ArjoHuntleigh’s battery type NDA 0100.
•
The charger is ready for use as soon as it is plugged in.
•
There is no On/Off button on the charger. Disconnect the mains by unplugging the charger.
Storage of batteries •
Batteries are charged when delivered but we recommend you to recharge the batteries when received due to a slow self discharge.
•
The batteries will slowly self discharge when not used
•
Batteries that will not be used for a longer period should be kept in a cool place, not under 0 °C (32 °F) and not over room temperature + 25 °C (77 °F).
CAUTION The battery is heavy – be careful not to drop it on your feet/floor!
NOTE 1
Place the battery in the charger as shown.

The indicator lamp (A) shows yellow light during charging

The indicator lamp shows green light when the battery is fully charged.
Batteries that are charged for the first time or after a longer storage period must be charged until the indicator lamp turns green.
NOTE If your Bolero is equipped with a scale; Do not leave anything on the seat that could disturb the zero range when reconnecting the battery after charging. Charging intervals • To prolong life of batteries, charge at regular intervals. •
If the lift is used frequently, its recommended to use two batteries, one in operation and one in the charger.
•
It is recommended that batteries not in use are left in the charger, there is no risk of overcharging the batteries.

Disinfection/Cleaning instructions Only use ArjoHuntleigh branded disinfectant cleansers. If you have any questions regarding disinfecting the equipment, or wish to order cleaning fluid, contact ArjoHuntleigh Customer Service.

Drain bath water and move Bolero in over the bath tub. Remove the mattress (see instruction on page 9) and place in the bottom of the tub. If applicable, the safety straps can be disinfected together with Bolero mattresses.
The following procedure should be carried out after every use and at the end of the day.

Most ArjoHuntleigh bath equipment is supplied with a disinfectant spray handle, read respective instructions on how to adjust and use it. Spray Bolero with disinfectant from the disinfection spray handle. A spray bottle containing disinfectant may also be used.

Scrub the mattresses and frame with a cloth or disposable towel. Be sure the underside of Bolero has been cleaned and disinfected.

Allow minimum two minutes for the disinfectant to work.

Rinse with cold water.

Dry Bolero parts with a clean towel and reassemble.
WARNING Always use protective gloves and protective glasses when handling concentrated cleaning agents. Avoid getting the cleaning agent on your skin or in your eyes. If this does occur, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water. Seek medical advice if irritation occurs. Always consult the material safety data sheet for the disinfectant cleanser. .
WARNING Do not use phenol, citric acid or petroleumbased solvents, trichloroethylene, chlorine and hydrogen peroxide or similar cleaning agents as these may damage the plastic material. Steam, ethylene oxide sterilization or high pressure washing can not be used either.
Cleaning of Safety Straps The safety straps can also be washed with soap and water at a temperature of 60-80 °C (140-176 °F).
