Preliminary Notes
Your boso-medicus prestige unit is a state of the art blood pressure computer. It works on the oscillometric measuring principle. The oscillations created by the pulse and transmitted via the cuff are stored and evaluated by a micro processor. Therefore there is no need for a microphone the positioning of which is vital if one is to get reliable readings. The boso-medicus prestige conforms to the requirements of the European Directives based on the Law governing Medical Products (CE mark), and to the European Standard EN 1060, Part 1, on „Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Instruments – General Requirements“ and Part 3 „Additional Requirements for Electronic Blood Pressure Systems.“ Regular checks on the accuracy of the measurement system should be carried out in accordance with the valid directives of the individual countries, governing this issue. The instructions for re-calibration checks are on page 37 of this booklet.

Blood Pressure (BP) Values
To determine correct blood pressure, the following two values have to be ascertained:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the following guideline for the assessing of blood pressure values:
● The Systolic or upper blood pressure. This is created when the heart muscle contracts and blood is being forced into the blood vessels. ● The Diastolic or lower blood pressure. This is created when the heart muscle extends and once again fills with blood.
Systolic
Diastolic
Too high
over 140 mmHg
over 90 mmHg
Normal – borderline
130 to 139 mmHg
85 to 89 mmHg
Normal
120 to 129 mmHg
80 to 84 mmHg
Optimum
up to 119 mmHg
up to 79 mmHg
Measurement values are expressed in mmHg (mm mercury column).
Whether medical treatment is necessary depends not only on the blood pressure but also on the risk profile of the individual patient. Please contact your GP if one of the values (SYS / DIA) constantly exceeds the limit (> 140 / > 90).

Important Observations to be followed when Self Testing
● Always take your blood pressure in a calm and relaxed state. It is recommended to do two checks daily.– on getting up in the morning and again at night before retiring. ● The blood pressure is best taken sitting down. Sit comfortably in an armchair or at a table where you can easily support your arm, holding it slightly bent. ● The measurement is taken on the free upper arm. Please ensure that there is no restriction from a tight, pushed-up sleeve. It may be necessary to remove the garment. ● During measurement the arm has to be kept absolutely still. ● Between successive measurements an interval of at least two minutes must be allowed.
differences. One single measurement, or measurements taken at irregular intervals, do not give any clear indication of the real blood pressure. An accurate evaluation is only possible when measurements are taken on a regular basis and for the established values to be entered in the blood pressure check card. ● Self testing does not mean self treatment. Never change the doses of any medication as prescribed by your doctor. ● Irregular heart beats can influence the sensitivity of the unit and result in inaccurate measurement values being displayed. Adverse results can also be experienced by patients with a pacemaker who have a weak pulse. The BP unit itself has however no detrimental effect on the pacemaker. ● Using your blood pressure monitor in the vicinity of strong electro-magnetic fields, (ie mobile telephones) can also cause faulty readings.
● Differences in blood pressure are quite normal. Even in closely repeated measurements there can be marked 23
Starting up
● Only use high quality leak proof batteries of the correct specifications (see Section Technical Data) and never mix used with new batteries or batteries of different manufacture. ● Remove batteries if the unit is not to be used for any length of time. ● The unit shows the following function symbols: battery fully loaded battery partially loaded replace battery soon
Fitting the Batteries The battery compartment is located on the underside of the unit. Insert batteries as shown in the illustration. Please note: If batteries are inserted incorrectly the unit does not function and this can lead to warming and leakage. 24
flashing! No further measurements possible; replace battery. ● Care for your environment Used batteries and recharging units do not belong into the household dustbin. They can be deposited at special refuse centres for used batteries. Contact your townhall for information. ● Please note when replacing batteries: The settings of date and time and the measurement values will not be lost if the batteries are replaced within 30 seconds.

Important : A measurement should not take longer than 2 minutes. In case of an error the measurement can be interrupted at any time by opening the velcro fastening of the cuff.
➔
Fitting the cuff ● Open cuff into a ring shape and pull onto your upper arm until the lower cuff edge lies 2-3 cm (1 inch) above the elbow. The cuff is positioned correctly if the special marking is located directly on the artery. The metal ring must never come to lie on the artery as this may cause a false reading. Most persons have a higher blood pressure on their left arm. Therefore the measurement should be taken on the left arm. If the blood pressure is higher on the right arm, the measurement should be taken on the right arm. ● Gently pull the cuff end that feeds through the metal ring and place it up and outside around your arm. Close velcro fastening with a light pressure. The cuff must not be too tight. There should roughly be space for two fingers between arm and cuff. ● Note on cuff sizes: This unit must only be used with the following cuff types: Order Number 143-4-750* 143-4-756 141-4-771
25
Taking your Blood Pressure
● Attach the cuff to the monitor by pressing the plug (click) into the socket on the left side of the unit.
26
● Place the arm with the cuff on the table holding it relaxed and slightly bent so that the cuff is line with your heart.
● Press the START-button. All digits and function symbols in the display are momentarily lit up to indicate that the unit is now ready for use.
● The unit has an „intelligent“ automatic system for inflating the cuff to the correct pressure (softmatic). The rising cuff pressure is displayed by the changing digits in the window. ● When the correct pressure is reached the pump switches off and the air is automatically released from the cuff. ● While the blood pressure is being taken the drop in cuff pressure is again digitally displayed and symbol is lit up. Remember to remain perfectly still and not to speak.
27
Display of Measured Values
● As soon as the first pulsations are registered, symbol flashes in Pulse rhythm. ● After completion of a measurement the built-in magnetic valve opens automatically to allow rapid deflation of the cuff. ● Measurements are automatically retained in the memory. If a measurement value is not to be kept, press <M> while the measured values are still on display. When the memory store is full (30 measurements), the oldest measurement is deleted and the latest one stored.
Interruption of a Measurement : A measurement can be interrupted at any stage by simply pressing the START-button. This triggers the automatic air release from the cuff. For further measurements press START again.
● Invalid measurements are not stored in the memory. ● If symbol appears following a completed measurement, it is recommended that the measurement is repeated while holding the arm motionless. A renewed display of symbol following the repeat measurement with the arm being held motionless, can be an indication of irregular heart beat. Discuss this matter with your GP on your next visit. ● After an interval of one minute the display returns automatically to the time mode. To repeat the procedure, once more press START. ● If no further measurement is required, remove cuff.

How to record blood pressure values in your record card and recall the „average“ value:
● Record the measured values into the record card that accompanies your unit as follows: ● Enter each individual reading. ● Recall the average value after 30 measurements and enter it in its designated column. ● Stored measurements can be recalled by briefly pressing „M“ in the time display mode. The average value of all stored results (Systole and Diastole) appears. In the „Pulse“ display the number of the retained measurements flashes. ● If there is no measurement stored in the memory, the display for the number of measurements taken flashes „AOO “. The systole and diastole displays each show „O “.

Recalling stored data and clearing memory
● To recall the last recorded message press „M“. The date and time of this measurement will be displayed and after about 3 seconds the actual measurement value comes up automatically (Systole, Diastole, Puls).
Systole mmHg
● Repeated pressing of „M“ will now successively display all measurements contained in the memory as described above. ● To start a new measurement, simply press „START“.
Diastole mmHg
● IMPORTANT: The memory will be cleared within 30 seconds if the unit is in the Time display mode while the batteries are being exchanged. If the batteries are removed whilst the measuring values are displayed, the memory store is cleared instantly.

The time signals do not appear while measurements are in progress.
Mains Operation
● The mains socket connector is located on the right side of the unit. For operating the unit from the mains use only the boso power supply pack (order number 4107-150). This power supply pack produces a rectified output of the correct polarity. Other commercially available power supply units can cause damage to the electronic components resulting in the guarantee becoming void. Important: If no batteries are in the unit, the memory store is cleared as soon as the power suppy lead is disconnected. Insert batteries in order to save the memory store. Important: Switch off the unit, disconnect the connector from the unit and than the adapter from the wall socket.

Error Messages
● Should there be any problem while taking your blood pressure that impedes correct monitoring, the display will show an error message instead of a BP reading.
– or – no valid pulse readings could be obtained → check position of cuff – or – Systolic – Diastolic pressure ≤ 10 mm/g → check position of cuff Err CUF: Incorrect inflation → cuff possibly not firmly enough positioned Err PUL: No useful pulse values for evaluation → check that cuff is correctly positioned
● Meaning of the error messages Err:
