1. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION This 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor is part of the FallAlert Bed/Chair Monitoring System product range and is designed to work with the cura1 range of Cordless Bed/Chair Pads and Floor Mats. Cordless Bed/Chair Pads and Floor Mats contain a 2719 Transmitter Insert, which sends alarm signals to the Monitor. (See point 9. System Operation for 2719 Transmitter activation procedure) When used with a Cordless Bed or Chair Pad, the 2719 Cordless Transmitter Insert detects changes in the Bed or Chair pad caused by a patient or resident rising or falling from a bed or chair. If this occurs the Transmitter Insert sends a signal to the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor, which then activates an alarm. Bed Pads are typically placed under the bed sheets, but on top of the mattress, in the patient or resident’s bed. Chair pads are typically placed directly on the seat of the chair used by the patient or resident. When used with a Cordless Floor Mat, the 2719 Cordless Transmitter Insert detects changes in the Floor Mat caused by a patient or resident stepping onto the mat. If this occurs the Transmitter Insert sends a signal to the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor, which then activates an alarm. Floor mats are typically placed adjacent to the bed or in the doorway of the patient or resident’s bedroom. Two Cordless Bed/Chair Pads or Floor Mats in any combination can be used simultaneously with each 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. The 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor itself is typically installed on, or near to the patient or resident’s bed or chair or sometimes in the doorway of the bedroom. It connects wirelessly to the cordless Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat. The 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor is powered from 3 x AA alkaline batteries or additionally it may be powered from a suitable 6Vdc plug pack. Note: Maximum distance between the Cordless Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat and the Monitor is 50m. Note: The 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor can also be used with hardwired Premium Bed/Chair Pads or Floor Mats but the cordless features are then automatically disabled. 2. EQUIPMENT BATTERY LIFE The average lifetime of 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor batteries is dependent upon usage. Typical lifetime, in normal operation, would be in the order of 3 to 6 months. The guaranteed lifetime of the batteries in the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert is 12 months. These batteries cannot be replaced and when they expire the Transmitter Insert should be disposed of and replaced with a new one. 3. LOW BATTERY DETECTION If operating from batteries only, when the battery becomes “Low”, the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor will beep intermittently. The “Low Battery” Light on the front of the Monitor will also illuminate. The batteries should then be replaced immediately. The “Low Battery” warning cannot be silenced or suspended and will continue until the batteries are replaced. The batteries are housed inside a compartment in the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. They can be replaced by removing the central screw on the back of the unit and sliding the battery cover up to access the battery compartment.
4
4. MISSING AC MAINS POWER SUPPLY DETECTION If operating from batteries and 6V plug pack connected to mains power, the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor has mains power loss detection. When the plug pack is removed or loses mains power, the Monitor will beep 3 times intermittently and the front “Reset” button will illuminate. The beeping can be stopped by either restoring the mains power or by pressing the front “Reset” button. Note: After resetting, the missing mains power alert will not reactivate until mains power is restored and then lost again. 5. PAD SIGNAL LOST DETECTION Cordless Bed/Chair Pad Or Floor Mat Once a Cordless Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat has been paired with the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor if the Monitor loses the wireless signal connection with the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter inside the Pad or Mat for any reason, then the Monitor will beep intermittently and the “Pad Signal Lost” indicator will illuminate. The “Pad 1” or “Pad 2” light will also illuminate identifying which Cordless Pad Transmitter has lost wireless Signal Connection. The only way to stop the beeping and reset the pad signal lost detection feature is to re-establish the wireless signal connection with the Cordless Pad Transmitter or alternatively remove batteries and power from the Monitor. The conditions where a 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor may lose wireless signal connection with the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter: 1. The Cordless Pad Transmitter is faulty. Solution: replace the Cordless Pad Transmitter. It will be necessary to reprogram and pair the Monitor and Transmitter. Alternatively as temporary measure use a hardwired Premium Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat. Plugging one of these in will reset the pad signal lost condition. 2. The Cordless Pad Transmitter batteries are low. 3. The Cordless Pad Transmitter is out of range of the Monitor. Solution: bring the Cordless Pad Transmitter back into range. 4. The Cordless Monitor is faulty. Solution: replace the Monitor. It will be necessary to program and pair the Monitor and Transmitter. Note: If the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter has been configured for fast communications the pad signal lost detection feature will activate after 110 seconds of continuous lost wireless signal connection. If the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter has been configured for slow communications the pad signal lost detection feature will activate after 4 minutes of continuous lost wireless signal connection. Hardwired Bed/Chair Pad Or Floor Mat If using a hardwired Premium Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat with the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor, if the Pad or Mat is disconnected for any reason the Monitor will beep intermittently and the “Pad Signal
5
Lost” indicator and the “Pad 1” Indicator will illuminate. The only way to stop the beeping and reset the pad signal lost detection feature is to re-connect the Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat or alternatively remove batteries and power from the Monitor. 6. SECURE RESET OPTION When an alarm condition occurs normally the caregiver resets the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor by simply pressing the “Reset” button on the front of the Monitor. However, in the event of a difficult resident or patient or to prevent unauthorized people resetting the Monitor themselves, a secure reset option is available. By moving the recessed switch in the side of the Monitor to the “Reset Button OFF” position disables the front “Reset” button. The caregiver must now use a Caregiver Reset Key to reset the Monitor and this prevents unauthorized resetting of an alarm. The caregiver resets the alarm by placing the Caregiver Reset Key on the red circle on the front of the monitor. 7. EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION Power Supply: Plug Pack Operation of the Monitor from a suitable 6Vdc plug pack is recommended. A 6Vdc power socket is provided in the side of the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. An AC mains power supply general-purpose outlet (GPO) should be provided at a convenient point near to the Monitor. Plug the 6vdc plug pack into the GPO and then connect it to the 6Vdc socket in the side of the Monitor. Switch on the GPO. Batteries Using a small Phillips type screwdriver, remove the central screw in the rear of the Monitor and open the battery compartment by sliding up the cover. Insert 3 x AA batteries into the battery compartment. Note: Whenever plug pack or battery power is connected the Monitor will beep once to confirm that power is connected. Mounting: The 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor unit can be fixed to the wall adjacent the bed or chair by using the mounting screw holes at the back of the Monitor. Optionally, the monitor may be placed inside a suitable mounting bracket. There is also a “soft” protective cover available that fits snugly around the Monitor so that it can be placed directly on a bedside table or attached to a bed head or chair with the straps provided. Nurse Call Output: If a remote alarm indication is required e.g. to activate an existing Nurse Call System using the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor a “Nurse Call” output is provided in the side of the monitor. This uses a 6.35mm audio type jack socket and presents “normally open” or “normally closed” volt free contacts rated at 0.5 amps maximum. An optional Nurse Call Cable is available to connect this output to the Nurse Call System input in the patient or resident’s room.
6
Note: When a Nurse Call Cable is plugged into the Nurse Call Output, the Cordless Monitor audible alarm is automatically muted. If the Nurse Call Cable is unplugged from the Monitor the “Reset” button will illuminate and the Monitor will beep continuously until the Nurse Call Cable is plugged back in or the “Reset” button is pressed. Pads Or Mat Connection: Premium Bed/Chair Pads or Floor Mats are connected to the RJ10 modular socket in the bottom of the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. It is important to loop the cable of the Pad or Mat through the cable strain relief adjacent the modular socket to help prevent damage to the Monitor or Pads or Floor Mat. 8. SETTING UP Adjusting Audible Alarm Volume: The volume of the audible alarm in the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor can be adjusted. This volume control is found inside the battery compartment at the back of the Monitor and is a thumbwheel adjustment labeled “Volume”. Volume can be adjusted from off to maximum Setting Melody Options There are three melody/tone options that can be selected to play when the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor goes into alarm. These options are selected using the three-position “Melody” slide switch found inside the battery compartment at the back of the Monitor. 9. SYSTEM OPERATION Programming Insert 3 X AA alkaline batteries into the 2718 Cordless Monitor. Press and release “Program” Button (located on the back of Monitor). The Monitor will beep three times to confirm that it is in programming mode and the front “Pad 1” light will illuminate. (Note: After a period of 30secs inactivity the Monitor will automatically exit programming mode). Connect a 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert to each Cordless Bed/Chair Pad or Floor Mat that is to be used with the Cordless Monitor. Two Cordless Bed/Chair Pads or Floor Mats in any combination can be used simultaneously with each 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. There is an “ON / OFF” switch on the side of the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert. Ensure that the Cordless Pad Transmitter Inserts are in the “OFF” condition. While the Cordless Monitor is in programming mode turn “ON” the first 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert. The “Pad 2” light will now be illuminated. The Monitor will emit two short beeps. Press the “Reset” button to exit program mode (If only one Pad or Mat is required) or turn “ON” the second 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert. The “Pad 2” light will now be illuminated. The Cordless Monitor will emit two short beeps and then automatically exit programming mode. Place the Cordless Pad Transmitter Inserts inside the pouches provided in the Pads or Mats. The system is now ready for use.
7
Note: If a Cordless Pad or Mat needs to be replaced (because it has expired), disconnect the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert from the expired Pad or Mat and connect it to the replacement Pad or Mat. No reprogramming is required. If a 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert needs to be replaced (because the batteries have expired) disconnect the Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert from the Pad or Mat and replace it with a new one. The System will have to be reprogrammed as explained above. A 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert can be stored for future use by disconnecting it from the Cordless Pad or Mat, switching “OFF” the Transmitter Insert to preserve battery life and storing away carefully. 2719 Activation Procedure: The cura1 2719 Version 7 Transmitter has a factory default setting of “Storage Mode” applied to it. This allows for the transmitter to be turned on before supplying to the end user which preserves the battery life. To activate the 2719 Version 7 transmitter please do the following: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Connect the transmitter to a chair / bed pad or floor mat. Turn on the transmitter. For bed and chair pads press and hold the pad for 15 seconds For floor mats stand on the mat for 15 seconds.
The transmitter is now activated. Please note that if the transmitter is turned off at any stage, then the 15 second activation procedure will have to be performed again.
Configuration Options The 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor can be used in either a cordless or hardwired configuration. Cordless In this configuration the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor can be used with either a Cordless Bed/Chair Pad or with a Cordless Floor Mat. Two Cordless Bed/Chair Pads or Floor Mats in any combination can be used simultaneously with the Cordless Falls Monitor. Cordless Bed/Chair Pads or Floor Mats are connected to a 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert, which fits inside a pouch in the Cordless Pad or Mat. There is an ON / OFF switch on the side of the Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert. The switch must be in the ON position for the Cordless Pad Transmitter to operate. Note: When used with a Bed/Chair Pad and pressure is applied to the pad i.e. patient or resident lying down in bed or sitting on the chair, the “Pad 1” or “Pad 2” light will flash once every few seconds. This indicates that the Monitor is “Active” and monitoring the patient or resident.
8
Cordless Bed / Chair Pad Operation Typically with a patient or resident lying in the bed or sitting in a chair, the equipment will operate as follows: 1. If the patient or resident vacates the bed or chair, the Bed/Chair Pad activates the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert which then sends a wireless alarm signal to 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. 2. The 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor begins to alarm immediately and the “Reset” button on the front of the Monitor illuminates. The “Pad 1” or “Pad 2” light will also illuminate. This alarm condition will continue until one of the following events occurs: The patient or resident returns to the bed or chair: In this case, the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert sends a wireless reset signal to the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor, which cancels the alarm condition. The Monitor “beeps” twice to acknowledge that the patient or resident has returned to the bed or chair. If the patient or resident does not return to the bed or chair, the alarm condition continues until the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor is manually reset. The caregiver goes to the bed or chair and resets the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor: The caregiver resets the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor by simply pressing the “Reset” button on the front of the Monitor or by applying the Caregiver Reset Key if the Secure Reset Option is selected. Cordless Floor Mat Operation If a patient or resident stands on the Floor Mat this activates the 2719 Cordless Pad Transmitter Insert which then sends a wireless alarm signal to 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor. This alarm condition will continue until a caregiver manually resets the monitor. The caregiver resets the 2718 Cordless Falls Monitor by simply pressing the “Reset” button on the front of the Monitor or by applying the Caregiver Reset Key if the Secure Reset Option is selected. Note: After reset, the “Monitor Not In Use” light will flash and the Monitor will beep once every second for the next 15 seconds indicating that normal operation has been suspended. During this time stepping on the Floor Mat will not activate an alarm condition. This is to allow the caregiver time to attend to the patient or resident without creating an alarm. As long as the caregiver is standing on the Floor Mat the Monitor will remain in this operation suspended condition for up to 3 minutes. Once the caregiver finishes attending to the patient or resident and steps off the Floor Mat, after a few seconds the Monitor will beep twice, the “Monitor Not In Use” light will stop flashing and then the Monitor will stop beeping. The “Pad 1” or “Pad 2” light will now flash once every few seconds. This indicates that the Monitor is again “Active” and monitoring the patient or resident. Alternatively, pressing the “Reset Button” at any time while the Monitor is in the operation suspended condition will immediately return the Monitor to its normal mode of operation.
