Carina Non Invasive Ventilation Guide
This is a guide to initial setting which can be considered for
use with the Carina Non Invasive ventilator.
The attending clinician must validate the appropriateness of
using these setting and adapt to the patients requirements
as deemed necessary.
Any operation of the device requires thorough knowledge
of the instructions for use
Required Equipment:
Carina with correct patient Hose Set and filter.
Carina connected to Oxygen gas supply
Fully charged battery and or connected mains power.
Carina set for “Mask” Ventilation
Non Vented NIV mask
Recently performed device check
Ventilation start up
Press the power button ion the rear of the Carina
The self test screen will appear , the LED’s will light
and an alarm will sound.
The Carina will go into Stand By mode

Choose the most appropriate sized mask (Carina uses an unvented mask)
Use the rotary knob to highlight ∆Psupp, Adjust to zero and confirm
Adjust PEEP to clinical desired level
Place the mask on the patients
Observe the ventilator Paw graph for a rise in pressure
Monitor the patient for appropriateness of ventilation.
Only tighten to achieve comfortable fit and a minimal leak. Avoid over tightening
Monitor the patient
Remove mask for pressure care and hydration and reassessment frequently
If CPAP is still required reapply mask
Adding Inspiratory Support
Once CPAP level is set to provide required Oxygenation, If the work of breathing remains excessive
Pressure Support can be applied
1.
Highlight ∆Psupp using the corresponding grey button
2.
Adjust ∆Psupp to the required level. (∆Psupp is the pressure above PEEP)
3.
Monitor the tidal volume and adjust mask tightness if required
4.
Adjust ∆Psupp in increments to achieve the require reduction in work of breathing
5.
Monitor the patient
AutoAdapt function
Carina has an auto adapt function which increases the set pressure/s over time so that the patient can
gradually get used to the applied pressures. The resultant pressure is set in the main screen. The start
pressures and time to rise is set in the AutoAdapt controls.
1.
Use the 1234 control to access menu #4 (AutoAdapt controls)
2.
Adjust PEEP start point
3.
Adjust PS start point
4.
Adjust the time desired to achieve the final pressures
5.
Turn Aut.Adapt “ON”
N.B. Maximum pressure change is 8 cmH2O per minute. Any changes to the settings restarts the timing. Check that the final
pressures are appropriate for the patient.
