Soft Water Monitor
Installation and Operation Manual
1. General Information The SWM-A is a Soft Water Monitor that continously checks a soft water supply line for hard water whenever there is flow in the line. The system consists of the following components: - 1 SWM-A with transformer - Flow Controller - Lining for connection
SWM -A
2. Application of SWM-A The system is used for monitoring a soft water supply for hardness. The system requires sodium chloride solution (brine) and water. Limits of application:
Flow controller
Temperature of raw water: max. 30 °C Surrounding temperature: always
> 0 °C max. 40 ° C
Inlet pressure:
min. 2,5 bar max. 6 bar no water hammer
Electric power supply and water pressure must remain on at all times. The inlet water must to be free from iron, manganese and other heavy metals. Oil and organic matter must not be present. City water normally meets these specifications.
the flow controller to the SWM-A. Connect red drain line to a drain. Put brine pickup into a brine tank. Make sure power supply is available for transformer. Keep tubes as short as possible. Electric connection: When cover is removed the controller is visible. The following alarm signals are available: output #2 is open when no alarm output #3 is closed when no alarm
3. Installation The controller needs electric supply, soft water, brine and a drain connection. Best install SWM-A as close as possible to the softener to be monitored. Install flow controller in soft water line. Observe arrows for direction of flow and connection to SWM-A. Install SWM-A on a wall or flat space close to the flow controller. 4. Function The SWM-A consists of a sensor, a multi port automatic valve with drive motor and a programmable controller. The multi port valve is connected to the flow controller. The flow controller drives a small portion of soft water to the SWM-A and through the sensor cell and back to soft water line return. When hard water enters the sensor, the hardness is accumulated to a certain level and then a hard water signal is issued, which causes an alarm on the electric controller. At this time the system must be relocked manually by pressing "B" for a regeneration. A regeneration is performed and the sensor is reset. The regeneration takes app. 15 minutes.
normal operation
Regeneration consists of the following steps: - brine draw - pause / test sensor - rinse
In "Pause" the sensor must signal hard and switch to soft when rinse is completed, otherwise an alarm is on. While pause the sensor is in contact with brine. If " no sensor signal " Alarm is on, this can be reset by pressing "A". Parameters can be changed if necessary: Time between regenerations is set to 168 hours standard. Pause, this is the time the sensor is in contact with brine is 300 (3000*0,1) seconds. Parameter mode is accessed by using the "esc" button and the up and down and return buttons. © Copyright by Spiegl GmbH&Co
5. Start-up When soft water is available, the system can be started up. - Plug in transformer - System will automatically move to service / monitoring step see sketch In this step the time to the next forced regeneration is displayed. Manually start regeneration by pressing "B", and observe if system draws brine and rinses. If the cover is open, the flow through sensor is visable. D:DatenPMAnlPatronen.PM4

6. Operation status line start regeneration reset alarm
Operation is fully automatic. manual acivity is required in the following cases:
hours to next automatic regeneration
- Alarm - Reset alarm pressing "A", when sensor ist soft, otherwise - Manually start regeneration, when soft water supply is restored, by pressing "B" - Check function of sensor when alarm " no sensor on regen" is on, by simply observing the regeneration cycle. 7. Service 8. Trouble shooting The system does not need regular service. However we recommend to replace the sensor every 2 years.
If system does not draw brine, the injektor or injector screen might be plugged.

While regeneration at end of step "test sensor ", sensor switch must signal "hard", no matter of the status before regeneration.
If this is not true the " no sensor on regen " alarm is on.
At the end of "rinse" sensor must show "soft".
If this is not true the " sensor upon regen " alarm is displayed.
