Scope and Intended Users This service manual describes the installation, repair, and maintenance of the Giraffe™ Shuttle. The Shuttle is designed to extend the mobility of all Giraffe platforms, including the Giraffe OmniBed™, Giraffe Incubator, and both Giraffe and Panda™ iRes warmers. The intended users for this service manual are authorized service personnel. For details, refer to “Important Safety Information” on page xi.

As with all medical equipment, attempting to use this device without a thorough understanding of its operation may result in patient or user injury. This device should be serviced only by authorized service personnel. Additional precautions specific to certain procedures are found in the text of this manual. The information contained in this service manual pertains only to those models of products which are marketed by GE Healthcare as of the effective date of this manual or the latest revision thereof. This service manual was prepared for exclusive use by GE Healthcare service personnel in light of their training and experience as well as the availability to them of parts, proper tools, and test equipment. Important Safety Information

Warnings The following safety precautions must be observed during all phases of operation, service, and repair of this equipment. Failure to comply with these precautions, or with specific warnings elsewhere in this manual, violates safety standards of design, manufacture, and intended use of the equipment. WARNING: Shuttle service must be done only by authorized service personnel. WARNING: Do not service the Shuttle while it is in clinical use or while it is attached to a warmer or incubator with a patient in the bed. Warning: Do not use the Shuttle in the presence of flammable anesthetics or elevated oxygen environments; an explosion hazard exists under these conditions. Warning: Do not clean the Shuttle with flammable agents. Small amounts of flammable agents, such as ether, alcohol, or similar cleaning solvents left in the unit can cause a fire. Warning: Always connect the Shuttle directly to a wall outlet. Connecting to a power strip or another piece of equipment may result in shock hazard. Warning: Electrical shock hazard: The device generates AC power even when unplugged from wall power. Before servicing, always disconnect from wall power, disconnect the battery - power module interconnect cable, and turn on the Shuttle power switch for 10 seconds to eliminate hazard. Warning: While servicing the Shuttle, it may be necessary to tip the unit back on the handles. The unit is heavy. Consider getting help when tipping and righting the unit. Be sure the wheels are properly locked. Be aware the unit center of gravity will shift while tipping backward and forward. Warning: The dovetail rails are heavy. Consider getting help before removing, installing, or transporting. Warning: The Universal Power Module is heavy. Consider getting help before removing, installing, or transporting. Warning: To avoid the risk of injury, observe the following battery safety precautions: • Do not heat the batteries or discard them in fire. • Do not use damaged batteries. • Do not try to open the batteries. Electrolyte is harmful to skin and eyes. • The batteries are heavy. Consider getting help before removing, installing or transporting.

The user or service staff should dispose all the waste properly as per federal, state, and local waste disposal regulations. Improper disposal could result in personal injury and environmental impact. Before transport, stop using the humidifier and empty the humidifier reservoir. The humidifier reservoir may open during the transport, resulting in spilled water and potential burns from hot water. Monitor patient temperature when humidity is discontinued.

Identifies the maximum of the specified value (height, weight, and so on). Red light. Has two meanings, depending on whether you are attaching or detaching the Shuttle:

When you are attaching the Shuttle to a bed, the red light indicates that the Shuttle is properly positioned for locking but is NOT YET LOCKED. You can now proceed to the next step - locking the Shuttle to the bed. When you are detaching the Shuttle from the bed, the red light indicates that the unlock pedal has been pressed and the Shuttle is UNLOCKED. You can now move the Shuttle away from the bed.

GO

Green light. Indicates that the Shuttle IS LOCKED to the bed, and the bed can be transported. The Lock Pedal is used to lock the Shuttle to a bed. The Unlock Pedal used to unlock the Shuttle from a bed. Do not step or stand on surface.

Chapter 1: Functional Description

1.1 System Overview The Shuttle is designed to extend the mobility of all Giraffe platforms, including the Giraffe OmniBed, Giraffe Incubator, and both Giraffe and Panda iRes warmers. The Shuttle is configured to attach securely to Giraffe and Panda iRes infant care products and provide electrical power to the Giraffe or Panda iRes unit and selected accessories. The Shuttle makes it possible to deliver continuous baby care during transport from one hospital area to another (e.g. from L&D to NICU), minimizing the need to expose the baby to excessive stimulation caused by physical movement from bed to bed, and minimizing the infant’s exposure to conditions in the hospital environment. 1

Chapter 1: Functional Description

The Shuttle is designed to accept all Shuttle-specific accessories from GE Healthcare, including the cord wrap bracket and gas cylinder holder. The Shuttle has two primary active functions: Locking to a bed and providing transportable power to the bed and accessories.

1.2 Mechanical Theory of Operation Attaching the Shuttle to a bed is accomplished by guiding the Shuttle between the legs of the bed and stepping on the locking pedal. Doing so rotates two locking arms, one for each leg, so that they are locked over the legs. This effectively locks the Shuttle and bed together as one unit. To detach the Shuttle from the bed, the locking arms are rotated back to their unlocked position by stepping on the unlocking pedal. Once unlocked, the Shuttle can be moved away from the bed. The Shuttle has two lock arms (right and left) for attachment. The lock and unlock pedals rotate these lock arms via four cables. Two cables rotate the lock arms to the locked position and two cables rotate the lock arms to the unlocked position. Each pedal and each lock arm has a pulley. Each cable has two attachment points: One at the pedal pulley and one at the lock arm pulley. The attachment point at each lock arm pulley is secured with a cam cable support. The attachment point at each pedal pulley is secured with a cable retainer. Each cable has two additional cable retainers: One near the lock arm pulley (inboard for the unlocking cable or outboard for the locking cable), and one in the battery compartment.
