M2 El-Tip Shower, Toilet & Commode Chair User Instructions August 2011 Introduction to the M2 El-Tip Shower, Toilet & Commode Chair The M2 El-Tip Shower, Toilet and Commode chair has been designed to provide definitive positioning and postural management for those who are unable to maintain their body posture and require extra support when showering or toileting. The M2 El-Tip has a battery-operated tilt-in-space facility. The tilt-in-space feature enables the occupant to be tilted forwards or backwards in the chair whilst maintaining the position of the knees and hips to achieve optimal support for showering and toileting. Tilting the body has the effect of distributing weight over a larger contact surface area providing a simple way to combat the build up of pressure as well as preventing the occupant slumping and sliding into an uncomfortable position, particularly when being hoisted into the chair. Manufactured from quality stainless steel with moulded polyurethane upholstery to ensure easy cleaning and disinfection, the M2 El-Tip is the ultimate shower, toilet and commode chair. Why is there a need for this type of chair? The ability of a seated person to function efficiently and perform activities depends on their ability to adopt the appropriate posture. All activity is posture dependent. If a person cannot move or has problems adjusting their posture, it may be necessary to use seating to try to provide externally what is limited internally. The principles of good seating are equally applicable to showering, toileting and commode chairs as they are to general seating. Whether looking for basic shower stools, practical shower, toileting and commode chairs that help to maintain independence or dynamic, postural support shower, toileting and commode chairs for assisted bathing, the Kirton H20 collection can accommodate both user and carer needs.

When charging, do not switch to the ON position before the charger is connected to the chair. The battery must be charged for at least 24 hours prior to being used for the first time. When the battery is running low, you will hear a “beep” sound from the control box when the chair is in use. DO NOT let the battery completely run out as this will damage both the battery and the control box. Allow 8 hours to completely recharge the chair. Turn the chair off when charging. Do not charge the chair in wet areas. Do not use the electrical functions when the chair is being sprayed with water. Do not use the chair if the protective casings around the motors are damaged – these must be replaced before use in wet areas.

Wheels Before using the M2 El-Tip chair for showering or toileting ensure the brakes are applied on all four wheels by pressing the grey ribbed area of the wheels down. Apply all brakes when tilting the chair. Tilting the chair The hand controller attached to the chair tilts the chair either forwards or backwards. Before tilting the chair ensure the user’s arms are positioned on the armrests or placed on the user’s lap. To tilt the chair, press the appropriate up/down buttons on the hand controller according to the position required. When hoisting a user into the chair it is recommended that a reclined tilt position is used to enable positioning of the user into the back of the seat area from the hoist sling. Care should be taken when using the negative tilt angle as the user could slide out of the chair.
Adjusting the seat height The M2 El-Tip chair has telescopic legs enabling the seat height to be adjusted to suit the user. Apply the brakes to all four wheels. Lay the chair on its side and remove the height adjustment clips by pushing on the two open sides of the clips with your thumbs. Slide the leg in and out to the desired height and replace the clips. Make sure the clips are pushed all the way through the legs to ensure stability. Repeat the procedure on the remaining three legs. All wheels should be at the same height.
M2 El-Tip Shower, Toilet & Commode Chair User Instructions August 2011 Backrest Adjustment Footrests The tension of the backrest can be adjusted to accommodate the user’s positioning and postural requirements by pulling the webbing straps tighter or releasing them accordingly.
The footrests slot into the two holders at the front of the chair frame. The height of the footrests can be adjusted to suit individual users. Remove the height adjustment clips by pushing on the two open sides of the clips with your thumbs. Slide the footrest in and out to the desired height and replace the clips ensuring they are all the way through the stainless steel tubing. The angle of the footplates can be inclined. Simply remove each footrest from the chair, detach the adjustment clips, turn the footplate 180° and replace the clips. Position the footrests on the opposite side of the chair. The calf support must always be used with the M2 El-Tip to prevent entrapment of the user’s legs behind the footrests when tilted.
The backrest can be completely removed for cleaning by pressing the two plastic tabs together and pulling the buckle apart. Washable at 80°c maximum. Lateral Supports The lateral supports are positioned in the square support holders on each side of the chair.
The calf support is fastened around the footrests with Velcro. The tension of the calf support can be adjusted according to the user’s needs. Armrests The armrests have the ability to be swiveled backwards to facilitate side transfers by lifting the snap release. NB: if using the lateral supports these will need to be removed before lifting the armrest. The armrests can be removed completely by lifting the snap release, vertically lifting the armrest and pulling free of the chair over the positioning bolt. The armrests should always be secured in a horizontal position when tilting the chair for the safety and positioning of the user.
The width of each lateral support is adjusted by loosening the thumbscrew, positioning the support and then retightening.
The height of the lateral supports can be changed by swapping over the left and the right supports and positioning them in their alternative holders.
M2 El-Tip Shower, Toilet & Commode Chair User Instructions August 2011 Headrest
Commode Pan The M2 El-Tip chair has a height and depth adjustable headrest. To adjust the height, loosen the thumbscrew on the holder at the base of the headrest, reposition and retighten.
If using a commode pan, ensure the pan is slid straight forwards or backwards along the seat. On the underside of the seat module the commode pan holders can be tightened by bending the wings closer to the seat to enable a firmer grip on the commode pan or indeed loosened accordingly. Potential Risks, Cautions and Warnings
To adjust the depth, loosen the thumbscrew at the top of the support arm and move the headrest in/out to the desired distance. Retighten the thumbscrew.
The wings of the headrest can be moved in and out to support the head. Apply pressure to either side of the headrest and push inwards to reduce the interior size of the headrest or alternatively position your hands on the inside of the headrest and pull out to increase the interior size of the headrest. DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE TO THE TWO ENDS OF THE HEADREST AS IT WILL BREAK THE EDGES. Removing and replacing the seat module The seat can be removed and replaced for cleaning or if multiple seats are purchased for individuals for use with one frame. The seat module is removed by lifting the seat module upwards from the frame holding both sides of the seat module. The seat is replaced by applying a light pressure on either side of the seat module. Ensure the back edge of the seat is fitted around the flat metal bar at the back of the chair. The seat lid fits over the aperture and covers the entire seat module.

The user is at risk if the M2 El-Tip chair is not properly set up to their requirements. Ensure the seat module is correctly “snapped” back in place before use. Before using the chair for showering or toileting apply all four brakes. Do not stand upright on the footrests. Always use the calf support, particularly when tilting the chair backwards. Do not apply pressure to the two ends of the headrest. Ensure the thumbscrews on the headrest and lateral supports are tight before use. Do not sit on the arms of the chair. Ensure the armrests are locked in a horizontal position before tilting the chair. Ensure the backrest tension is adjusted to avoid undue pressure on the back. Be aware that when using the negative tilt facility the user may slide forward and potentially out of the chair. Do not let the battery discharge. Regularly charge the battery preferably overnight. Do not charge the chair in wet areas. Do not use the electrical functions when the chair is being sprayed with water. Do not use the chair if the protective casings around the motors are damaged – these must be replaced before use in wet areas.
