Safety tests We recommend performing the following safety checks yearly:

Visual check The BiliBed should be examined for damage and dirt on the inside and outside of the unit, and repaired or cleaned if necessary. a

Cleaning and disinfecting ¾

Unplug the unit from the power supply.

Light unit and baby support: The outside surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth. For disinfecting, alcohol may also be used. Cleaning or disinfecting agents should not be used in concentrated form! Important Do not use cleaning solutions such as appliance disinfectants which use formaldehyde. Do not autoclave the baby support or disinfect by using heat. Bilicombi therapy blanket: Please refer to the BiliBed instructions for use.

2.2 Functional tests Every test function of the BiliBed shall be performed according to the Instructions for Use and Service Manual. Intensity of irradiation: Check the "Light Tube Change Log" (in the inside of the light unit) for the date and/or "actual hours" column of the last tube change. If necessary (every 1,500 hours), change the tube (see 2.2.a). a

Changing the fluorescent tube After a 1,500 hour-interval, the light tube requires replacement. By using the "total h" hour meter, this time interval can be monitored accurately. ¾

Unplug the light unit from the power supply.

¾

Remove the baby support from the light unit.

¾

Release the 10 screws with a screwdriver and remove the Perspex cover.

¾

Lift the metal clamp and carefully remove the light tube from its socket and from its clip.

¾

Put the tube aside immediately; in order to avoid confusion.

¾

Insert the new tube into the clip and push into the socket until the tube snaps in.

¾

Readjust the metal clamp to securely hold the lamp.

Warning Use only Medela-approved replacement tubes. Otherwise, the success of the therapy cannot be guaranteed! ¾

Check that the reflector is clean and shiny. If required, clean reflector.

¾

Re-mount the Perspex cover with the 10 screws.

Fan: The BiliBed has an electronic safety circuit which switches the lamp off if the fan does not run at the proper speed or is blocked. This protects the system from overheating. Stop the fan with a finger and ensure that the lamp switches off automatically. If necessary, contact a Medela service technician.

Disposal ®

The BiliBed is of modular design. It can thus be disassembled into its individual components. The BiliBed is mainly made of technical plastics which can be disposed of in accordance with local regulations. The fan, lamp and electric parts should be disposed of separately.
