The Medtronic CareLink Express Monitor
Models 2020B and 2020C are portable
interrogation and data transfer tools used
with Medtronic implantable cardiac

Using the monitor
Refer to the supported device card
to determine the appropriate
monitor to use when interrogating
the patient’s implanted cardiac
Interrogate the patient’s device with
the Model 2020B first. If the Model
2020B does not identify the
patient’s device, then interrogate it
with the Model 2020C.
Verify that the facility’s CareLink
account is active.
Verify that the batteries are
installed with proper polarity.
Locate an analog telephone line
wall socket. The monitor does not
need to be connected to an analog
telephone line wall socket during
the interrogation of a patient’s
implanted cardiac device. The
monitor must be connected to an
analog telephone line wall socket
within 15 minutes of the
interrogation to complete the
transmission to the CareLink
Network. If the monitor is not
connected to an analog telephone
line wall socket within 15 minutes,
the monitor powers down, the
patient’s data is lost, and the
interrogation must be performed
If you must end the interrogation of
the patient’s implanted device
before it is complete, remove the
antenna from over the implanted
device and turn off the monitor.
When you are ready to restart the
session, repeat the interrogation
If a sterile barrier is required
between the monitor antenna and
the patient, cover the antenna and
antenna cable with Medtronic
Sterile Sleeve Model 6177, and
follow standard sterile procedures.
1. Press the power button.
2. Hold the antenna directly over the
patient’s implanted device to begin
3. Watch the status lights on the display
panel on the front of the monitor:
When the monitor identifies the
implanted cardiac device, the
green Reading Status light turns
solid and the monitor beeps twice.
The patient’s implanted device may
emit a tone when the antenna is
placed over it.
The monitor completes the device
interrogation when all indicator
lights turn solid and the monitor
Reposition the antenna if the
orange Antenna Position Status
Remove the antenna when the
interrogation is complete.
4. Connect the monitor to an analog
telephone line wall socket within
15 minutes of the monitor completing
the device interrogation to transmit
the data to the CareLink Network.
Approximately every 25 seconds the
monitor beeps 5 times, until the
monitor is connected to an analog
telephone line wall socket. The
monitor stops beeping when data
Before using the monitor for the first time,
you must verify the facility’s CareLink
account, install the batteries, and
configure the telephone line settings.
Each time you interrogate a patient’s
implanted device, the monitor must
transmit the patient data using an analog
telephone line. The monitor can be
connected to an analog telephone line
after each interrogation, or it may be set
up with a permanent telephone line
1. Install four LR6 (AA) batteries, with
proper polarity, into the battery
compartment on the bottom of the
monitor, as shown below.
2. Select the appropriate phone line
The dialing type selector switch is
marked T (Tone) and P (Pulse).
Position the switch to select the
appropriate type of telephone
dialing system for your clinic.
The dialing prefix selector
configures the monitor to obtain a
telephone line for placing a call.
Select N (None) if no prefix is
required to reach an external
telephone line. If a number must be
dialed to obtain an external line,
position the switch to the position
that corresponds to the required
dialing prefix number.
The P (Pulse) dialing type selection
may not be available in some
Dialing prefix settings will differ
depending on region.

Connect the monitor to a
telephone line wall socket
1. Locate the monitor and the telephone
2. Locate the sockets on the left side of
3. Plug one end of the telephone cord
into one of the telephone sockets on
the left side of the monitor.
4. Plug the other end of the telephone
cord into an analog telephone line
wall socket. A telephone may be
connected to the second telephone
socket, if desired.
If the monitor is turned on and
plugged into an analog telephone

successfully interrogated a device
within the last 15 minutes, the
monitor will beep twice and
automatically begin dialing the
programmed telephone number.
The transmission completes when
all of the Sending Status lights turn
solid, the Sending Complete Status

Updating the monitor software
to support newer devices
1. Verify that the telephone cord is
connected to one of the monitor
