Before Use
Intended use
This instrument has been designed to be used with Olympus endoscopes, light
sources, video system centers, camera control units and endoscopic ultrasound
centers for endoscopic diagnosis and video observation.
Do not use this instrument for any purpose other than its intended use.
Instruction manual
This instruction manual contains essential information on using this instrument
safely and effectively. Before use, thoroughly review this manual and the
manuals of all equipment which will be used during the procedure and use the
equipment as instructed.
Keep this and all related instruction manuals in a safe, accessible location. If you
have any questions or comments about any information in this manual, please
contact Olympus.
Terms used in this manual
Video system center:
The video system center is a device that converts signals from a
videoscope or video converter into monitor images.
Camera control unit:
The camera control unit is a device that converts signals from a
fiberscope or rigid endoscope into monitor images.
Ultrasound center:
The ultrasound center converts the ultrasonic signals from an ultrasonic
endoscope or probe into monitor images.
Light source:
The light source provides light and electrical signals to the endoscope.
Wall mains socket outlet:
An electrical outlet that has a terminal used exclusively for grounding.

HDTV:
High Definition Television. It is a format featuring higher image definition
than the SDTV format.
SDTV:
Standard Definition Television. It is the format used by ordinary television
systems.
Aspect ratio:
It is a unit that expresses a rate of a screen side and a vertical length.
The aspect ratio of 4:3 is used usually in SDTV.
VESA mounting standards:
These are the standards to be applied when mounting an LCD panel on
a monitor mount or stand. These standards were defined by the Video
Electronics Standards Association (VESA), a US-based organization
concerned with computer display devices. These standards include the
following three specifications.
– 75 × 75 mm mounts
– 100 × 100 mm mounts
– Desk stand specifications
Mobile workstation:
The mobile workstation is a special trolley on which this monitor is
placed.
Instrument compatibility
Refer to the “System chart” in the Appendix to confirm that this instrument is
compatible with the ancillary equipment being used. Using incompatible
equipment can result in patient or operator injury and/or equipment damage. It
may also impair the functionality of the instrument.
This instrument complies medical electrical equipment edition 2 (IEC 60601-1-2:
2001). However when connecting with a instrument complies with medical
electrical equipment edition 1 (IEC 60601-1-2: 1993), the whole system complies
edition 1. (See , “EMC compliance information” on page 135 for EMC
compliance level.)

Repair and modification
This instrument does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Do not
disassemble, modify or attempt to repair it; patient or operator injury and/or
equipment damage can result.
Some problems that appear to be malfunctions may be correctable by referring
to Chapter 9, “Troubleshooting” If the problem cannot be resolved using the
information in Chapter 9, contact Olympus.

Dangers, warnings and cautions
Follow the dangers, warnings and cautions given below when handling this
instrument. This information is to be supplemented by the dangers, warnings
and cautions given in each chapter.
•
Strictly observe the following precautions. Failure to do so
may place the patient and medical personnel in danger of an
electric shock:
− Keep fluids away from all electrical equipment. If fluids are
spilled on or into the monitor, immediately stop operating
it and contact Olympus.
− Do not prepare, inspect or use this instrument with wet
hands.
•
Never install and operate this instrument in locations where:
− The concentration of oxygen is high.
− Oxidizing agents (such as nitrous oxide (N2O)) are
present in the atmosphere.
− Flammable anesthetics are present in the atmosphere.
Otherwise, explosion or fire may result because this monitor
is not explosion-proof.
•
Strictly observe the following precautions for the power cord.
Damaging the power cord may result in fire or an electric
shock:
− When placing the power cord, take care that it is not
crushed in the space between the monitor and a wall,
mobile workstation or a shelf.
− Do not modify or damage the power cord.
− Do not stretch or place a heavy object on the power cord.
− Do not place the power cord near heating equipment or
expose it to excessive heat.
− Always grasp and pull the plug when unplugging the
power cord. Do not pull on the cord itself.
•

Always power the monitor with the voltage specified in this
manual. Supplying a non-specified voltage to the monitor
may result in fire or an electric shock.

•
To protect its components from excessive heat, the monitor
will turn itself OFF if its internal temperature rises to a level at
which equipment damage could occur. If this happens during
the procedure, immediately stop the examination and gently
withdraw the videoscope, fiberscope, rigid endoscope or
ultrasonic endoscope from the patient as indicated in the
endscope’s instruction manual, and contact Olympus.
•
If an abnormality is suspected during use of the instrument,
stop operation of the monitor, and some problems may be
correctable by referring to the following procedure.Damage
or irregularity in the instrument may compromise patient or
operator safety and may result in more severe equipment
damage.
− Case of a loss of the endoscopic image or a freeze on it;
Turn off the monitor, and turn on it again after 10 sec.Also
a power supply is switched on again ancillary equipment
to be used in combination with this monitor as described
in the instruction manuals for the equipment. If the
problem cannot be resolved by the described remedial
action, stop using the monitor and gently withdraw the
videoscope, fiberscope, rigid endoscope or ultrasonic
endoscope from the patient body as indicated in the
endoscope’s instruction manual.
− Case of other abnormalities; Immediately stop operation
of the monitor, withdraw the videoscope, fiberscope, rigid
endoscope or ultrasonic endoscope from the patient as
indicated in the endoscope’s manual, and take remedial
action as described in Chapter 9, “Troubleshooting”. If the
problem cannot be resolved by the described remedial
action, be sure to contact Olympus for repair as described
in Section 9.2, “Returning the monitor for repair”.
•
To prepare for unexpected equipment failure, be sure to
prepare spare equipment.
•
Please establish the system with equipment complied with
relevant EMC standards for safety reason.
•
Equipment which does not comply with EMC standard may
cause interference and its function or performance may be
affected.
•
Portable or mobile phones may influence the medical
electrical equipment by their emitting energy.

When installing this instrument on the mobile workstation, or
a trolley with a clamping table, be sure to provide the mobile
workstation or trolley with a toppling/movement prevention
measure. If such a measure is not taken, the mobile
workstation or trolley could move or fall during the procedure,
which could cause patient and/or operator injury.
•
It is recommended that only Olympus high frequency
electrosurgical equipment be used with this unit.
Non-Olympus equipment can cause interference on the
monitor display or a loss of the endoscopic image.
•
Before using high frequency electrosurgical equipment,
make sure that any signal noise emitted from the equipment
does not affect the observation of the surgical procedures. If
high frequency electrosurgical equipment is used without
such confirmation, patient injury may result.
•
Always use the monitor cables designated in this instruction
manual. Using a non-designated or modified monitor cable
may result in production of monitor noise at a level that may
affect the observation and treatment or loss of observation
image.
•
This product has a fluorescent lamp that contains a small
amount of mercury. It also contains lead in some
components. Disposal of these materials may be regulated in
your community due to environmental considerations. For
disposal or recycling in formation please contact your local
authorities, or the electronics industries Alliance.
•
To assure continued FCC emission limit compliance, the
user must use only shielded interface cables when
connecting to external units. Also any unauthorized changes
or modifications to this equipment could void the user’s
authority to operate it.
•
Always use the power cord and connection cables that were
shipped with the monitor or mobile workstation. Using other
power cords or connection cables may result in an electric
shock or malfunction.
•
This monitor should be installed near the main power supply
outlet so that the power plug is easily accessible.
•
When installing this instrument, be sure to attach it securely
to the monitor mount. Otherwise, the instrument may fall.
This may cause patient and/or operator injury and may
damage the instrument.

•
Be sure to turn the monitor OFF and unplug the power cord
before proceeding to care and maintenance of the monitor. If
the power cord is left plugged in, an electric shock may
result.
•
Do not move the monitor while the power cord and
connection cables are connected. Otherwise, damage to the
monitor, power cord and connection cables, fire or an electric
shock may result.
•
When installing or using the monitor, take care not to strike
against a corner of the monitor. Otherwise, injury may result.
•
In order to maintain adequate ventilation, do not install or
place this unit in a bookcase, built-in cabinet or any other
confined space. Also ensure that no curtains or other
materials interfere with proper ventilation of the unit to
prevent the risk of an electric shock or fire hazard due to
overheating.
•
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, keep this
equipment away from all liquids and do not place any liquid
containers on top of it. Store the equipment only in locations
in which it will not be exposed to dripping or splashing liquids.
•
Even when the power switch is in the OFF position, a small
current flows the filter circuit.
•
The LCD panel is composed of precision parts. Handle and
operate it carefully.
•
When installing the instrument, reserve a space of 10 cm or
larger between the instrument and any walls or other
equipment. Lack of such a space will interfere with the
monitor’s internal cooling and may lead to malfunction or
equipment damage.
•
This monitor is intended for use in an electromagnetic
environment specified in “EMC compliance information” on
page 141.
•
When the monitor is separated from a commercial power
supply, disconnect the power cord from the wall mains socket
outlet or mobile workstation.
•
To avoid the electromagnetic influence from other equipment
(any equipment other than this instrument or the components
that constitute this system), the system should be observed
to verify its normal operation in the configuration in which it
will be used.

•
Be sure not to bring and/or pile up this instrument too close to
other instruments to avoid an electromagnetic interference
from them.
•
Electromagnetic interference may occur on this instrument
near a portable device and a mobile RF communications
equipment such as a cellphone marked with the following
symbol:

This monitor may become hot after an extended period of
operation, but this is not indicate a malfunction.
•
High frequency electrosurgical equipment can cause slight
interference on the monitor display.
•
The effective pixels on the LCD display are specified to be
more than 99.99%, but 0.01% or less of the total pixels may
be ineffective or lit permanently (in red, blue or green). Note
that this does not indicate a malfunction.
•
If a still image is displayed for a long period, a temporary
residual image (burn) may be observed on the screen. The
residual image will disappear after a moving image has been
displayed for a period of time.
•
The response rate and intensity of the liquid crystals are
variable, depending on the ambient temperature.
•
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with
the limits for a class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of
the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide
reasonable protection against harmful interference when the
equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This
equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the
instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio
communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential
area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the
user will be required to correct the interference at his own
expense.

1. POWER switch
This switch is pressed to turn ON/OFF the monitor. When the monitor is
turned ON, the power indicator lights up.
2. INPUT SELECT buttons
When one of these buttons is pressed, the corresponding input line is
activated and the indicator above the button lights up.

3. PHASE control knob∗1
This knob controls the color phase. The indicator above the knob lights
when the knob is set to a position other than the standard setting. Turn the
knob clockwise to make the image more green. Turn the knob
counterclockwise to make the image more purple.
This knob is locked at the factory prior to shipment. Before using it for the
first time, unlock it as described in Section 6.2, “Releasing the CONTROL
LOCK menu item”.
4. CHROMA control knob∗1
This knob controls the color depth. The indicator above the knob lights when
the knob is set to a position other than the standard setting. Turn the knob
clockwise to increase the color depth.
Turn the knob counterclockwise to decrease the color depth.
This knob is locked at the factory prior to shipment. Before using it for the
first time, unlock it as described in Section 6.2, “Releasing the CONTROL
LOCK menu item”.
5. BRIGHT control knob∗1
This knob controls the brightness. The indicator above the knob lights when
the knob is set to a position other than the standard setting. Turn the knob
clockwise to increase the picture brightness.
Turn the knob counterclockwise to decrease the picture brightness.
This knob is locked at the factory prior to shipment. Before using it for the
first time, unlock it as described in Section 6.2, “Releasing the CONTROL

This knob controls the contrast. The indicator above the knob lights when
the knob is set to a position other than the standard setting. Turn the knob
clockwise to increase the picture contrast. Turn the knob counterclockwise
to decrease the picture contrast.
This knob is locked at the factory prior to shipment. Before using it for the
first time, unlock it as described in Section 6.2, “Releasing the CONTROL
LOCK menu item”.
7. FUNCTION 1, 2 buttons
Users can assign one of the following functions to these keys as described
in Chapter 6, “Screen Menus”.
•
HV DELAY: Select “OFF”, “H”, “V” or “HV”.
•
SD ZOOM: Select the aspect ratio of “4:3” or “OVERSCAN”
(zoom 12% larger than the normal).
•
BLUE ONLY: Display only the blue component of the video.
•
HD ZOOM∗1: Select the aspect ratio of “4:3”or “5:4”.
•
COMP.AUTOSETUP∗1: Automatically set (position and size
of screen) the COMPUTER input signal.
•
GAMMA SELECT: Select “MODE1” or “MODE2”
•
UNDEF.: Do not assign a function to the switch.
8. MENU ENTER button
This button is pressed to enter a selection or setting from a screen menu.
9. MENU select buttons
These buttons are pressed to move the cursor and select items in a screen
menu.
10. MENU/EXIT button
This button is pressed to display the screen menu. Press again to exit the
screen menu.

All analog component A, VIDEO and Y/C input connectors
are internally terminated at 75 Ω when no component is
connected to the corresponding output connector. When a
cable is connected to an output connector, the termination of
the corresponding input connector is released automatically
and the input is sent to the corresponding output connector
without alteration (loop-through output).
1. AC power inlet
AC power is provided via this inlet.
2. Power cord clamps
These clamps prevent the power cord from slipping out of the power inlet.
3. Analog component signal B IN connectors
The IN connectors are used to monitor input composed of analog RGB or
YPBPR component signals. To monitor the input signals fed through the IN
connectors, press the INPUT SELECT “RGB B” button on the front panel.
EXT SYNC IN connector
When it is necessary to synchronize the operation of the monitor with
external equipment, connect the signal from the video system center,
camera control unit or endoscopic ultrasound center, etc. here.
4. Potential equalization terminal
When potential equalization is required, connect this terminal to the
potential equalization terminal of the equipment.
5. REMOTE1 connector
Connect to the MONITOR REMOTE connector of the video system center.
6. RS-232C connector
This connector is connected to the RS-232C connector of other equipment.
The monitor can then be operated by commands from that equipment.
7. COMPUTER IN connector (OEV191H only)
This connector is connected to the designated endoscopic ultrasound
center. The following input formats can be received:
VGA
(640 × 480, fv=60Hz) (640 × 400, fv=70Hz)
SVGA
(800 × 600, fv=60Hz)
XGA
(1024 × 768, fv=60/70/75/85Hz)
These signals are compatible with VESA standards.
Even if the input signal format corresponds, it may not be correctly displayed
by the connected apparatus.

8. VIDEO IN/OUT connectors
VIDEO IN connector
This connector receives the composite video signal. Connect the output
from the video system center, camera control unit, endoscopic ultrasound
center or VTR here. To monitor the input signal fed through this connector,
press the INPUT SELECT “VIDEO” button on the front panel.
VIDEO OUT connector
This is a loop-through output connector for the signal input at the VIDEO IN
connector. Connect the video input of a VTR or another monitor here.
9. Space for HD/SD SDI adapter (optional, OEV191H only)
HD/SD SDI adapter MAJ-1431 (optional) can be attached here as
necessary, according to your requirements.
The adapter can be only attached to the OEV191H only.
10. Y/C IN/OUT connectors
Y/C IN connector
This connector receives the Y/C signal line. Connect the Y/C output from the
video system center, camera control unit, endoscopic ultrasound center or
VTR here. To monitor the input signal fed through this connector, press the
INPUT SELECT “Y/C” button on the front panel.
Y/C OUT connector
This is a loop-through output connector for the signal input at the Y/C IN
connector. Connect the Y/C output from a VTR or another monitor here.
11. Analog component signal A IN/OUT connectors
The IN connectors are used to monitor input composed of analog RGB or
YPBPR component signals. The OUT connectors are loop-through output
connectors for the signals input to the IN connectors. To monitor the input
signals fed through the IN connectors, press the INPUT SELECT “RGB A”
button on the front panel.

To input and monitor analog RGB signals:
Connect the analog RGB output connectors from a video
system center, camera control unit or endoscopic ultrasound
center to the monitor’s IN connectors.

To output the analog RGB input signals:
Connect the analog RGB input connectors from a video
printer or another monitor to this monitor’s corresponding
OUT connectors.

To input and monitor YPBPR component video signals:
Connect the YPBPR component video output connectors
from video system center to the monitor’s corresponding IN
connectors.

To output the YPBPR component video input signals:
Connect to the YPBPR component video input connectors
from an external device to the monitor’s OUT connectors.
EXT SYNC IN connector
When it is necessary to synchronize the operation of the monitor with
external equipment, connect the signal from the video system center,
camera control unit or endoscopic ultrasound center, etc. here.
EXT SYNC OUT connector
This is a loop-through output connector for the signal input at the EXT
SYNC IN connector. Connect the EXT SYNC output from the video
equipment to be synchronized with the monitor here.
