Warnings, Cautions and Notes This user guide is designed to enable the reader to competently and responsibly operate the Contoura® 480. This manual must be read in its entirety prior to operating the CONTOURA 480.

This manual must be kept in an easily assessable area for future reference. All warnings, cautions and notes must be strictly adhered to. Failure to comply with this guide may result in harm to either patient or caregiver. ArjoHuntleigh product specialists can provide training in addition to this handbook if required. General Warnings
WARNING Do not use accessories that have not been designed or approved for use with the bed. Electrical equipment can be hazardous if misused. Do not use electrically powered beds in the presence of flammable gases such as anaesthetic agents. Do not use electrically powered beds in operating theatres.

1. Introduction The Contoura® 480 is an electrically-actuated acute care bed with multiple functions to provide the best nursing position for both patient and carer. The following features, dependant upon the bed configuration, are available within the range:
• Four section electrically operated profiling mattress platform with independent adjustment of backrest angle, thigh section angle and calf section angle.
• Auto-Contour of backrest and thigh sections by pressing one button. • Pro-Contour retractable backrest facility. • Electrically-actuated bed height adjustment. • Electrically actuated Trendelenberg tilt with horizontal stop feature. • Manually operated (gas spring assisted) calf elevation. • Integral mattress platform extension. • Integral or detachable ¾ length folding side rails. • Steel mattress support surface. • 125mm or 150mm diameter castors with central operation for braking and steering.
• Choice of removable head and foot panel designs. • Backrest x-ray facility.

2. Clinical Applications Area of use
General medicine; general and specialist surgery; care of the elderly; HDU; ITU; coronary care and oncology.
Indications
The bed is appropriate for high dependency patients who pose a movement and handling risk and or whose clinical condition requires that they are positioned with minimal physical handling. Patients with a moderate amount of independence can, at the carer’s discretion, use the controls to adjust their own position.
Contra-indications
The total safe working load of the bed is 267 kg.

3. Installation Connect the bed to a suitable mains electricity socket outlet. When not in use, or when moving the bed, store the electrical supply cable using the two hooks provided at the head of the bed beneath the mattress platform.

WARNING Make sure that the coiled electrical power cable is not stretched excessively. Make sure that handset cables and electrical supply cables cannot become entangled with moving parts of the bed. Disconnect the electrical power cable from the mains and store before transporting the bed. If the power cable shows any sign of damage, replace immediately. An equipotential terminal is provided on the mattress platform frame at the head-end of the bed.
WARNING When other electrical equipment is within patient / user reach, the potential difference between this equipment can be equalised by interconnecting the equipotential terminals of each piece of equipment.

4. Operation Safety • Always use a mattress of the correct size and type. A range of suitable pressure reducing and pressure relieving mattresses is available from ArjoHuntleigh.
• When the bed is operated, make sure that obstacles such as bedside furniture do not restrict movement.
• Before operating the bed, make sure that the patient is safely positioned to avoid entrapment or imbalance.
• Before transporting using the bed, make sure that the bed is at a suitable height for the attendants to move the bed without stooping or straining.
• Always apply the brakes when the bed is stationary.
WARNING When the patient's condition could lead to patient entrapment, the mattress support platform should be left in the flat position whilst unattended.
WARNING Lower the bed to minimum height when the patient is left unattended to reduce the risk of injury due to falls whilst getting into or out of the bed, or whilst lying on the bed.
WARNING The clinically qualified person responsible should consider the age, size and condition of the patient before using the bed or safety sides.
WARNING Always ensure that all hospital lines and power cables are free from possible entanglement with mechanical parts of the bed. Always ensure that the attendant and patient limbs are free from potential entrapment areas before operating any functions. • Keep these instructions handy for reference.

Brakes and Steering There are two coupled brake pedals at the foot end of the bed.
With the pedals in the Down Brake position, the brakes are applied simultaneously and the bed is immobilised.
With the pedals in the Horizontal Free position, all the brakes are released and the bed can be moved in any direction.
With the pedals in the Up Steer position, a steering castor is engaged at one end of the bed to provide better control when pushing the bed in a straight line. When moving the bed, Push from the Foot End holding the foot panel.

Safety Sides WARNING Safety sides must only be used with a mattress of the correct size and which is approved for use with the bed. Maximum mattress thickness should be 170 mm. The clinically qualified person responsible should consider the age, size and condition of the patient before using safety sides.

Operation To lower the side: Hold the top rail near the foot-end just in front of the joint (3). Gently push forward towards head end direction whilst pulling operating knob (1) and lower the side towards the foot of the bed controlling the descent speed (2). As the side begins to lower, release the operating knob (1).

Safety side operation
Caution Do NOT use the safety sides to lift or move the bed.
WARNING Other manufacturers safety sides are incompatible with the Contoura 480 range of beds. DO NOT use the side rails on other manufacturer’s beds.

To raise the side: Lift the top rail until the operating knob automatically clicks into it’s locked position at maximum height. The safety side release mechanism contains a yellow band (1). When the operating knob is viewed from above and the yellow band can be seen, this means that the safety side is NOT securely locked in the upright position. The yellow band should NEVER be visible from above when the safety side is correctly in the locked position.

WARNING Do not leave the safety rail in the upright position with the yellow band showing. The safety sides are supplied in pairs, left and right hand, and must be fitted in such a way that they fold down towards the foot of the bed. They are attached to the side of the mattress platform by means of integral clamps.

Bed Extension To extend the bed: Apply the brakes. Squeeze the latch lever (1) and handle (2) together and pull out the foot-end of the mattress platform (3). The footend of the mattress platform automatically locks when fully extended and the latch lever is released.

Extending or retracting the bed
Mattress Deck Extension Hold the calf extension bow (4) and raise the calf section extension sheet (5) up and away from the calf section deck sheet (6).

Pull the bow (4) and calf section extension sheet (5) towards the foot of the bed. When the bow is fully extended, the calf section extension sheet can rest back into position on the calf section deck sheet (6). To retract the bed and mattress deck extension: Reverse the above procedure.
Kneebreak Angle The kneebreak angle can be manually adjusted whenever the thigh section of the mattress platform is raised. Hold the side of the calf section (6) at the foot-end of the bed. Lift the release lever (7) and push the calf section downwards (against the action of the gas spring). Release the lever to lock the calf section at any angle.

Bed Stripper The bedstripper, which is used to rest clean linen on when the bed sheets are being changed, is located at the foot of the bed. Pull the bar away from the bed until the bedstripper engages in the fully extended position.

X-Ray Backrest Cassette Tray The backrest x-ray cassette tray, if fitted, provides the facility for chest x-ray photography. This can be achieved at any point between the horizontal and sitting position.
X-Ray backrest cassette tray - In raised and locked position With the backrest raised, press button (1) whilst holding knob (2) and support the x-ray cassette tray as it lowers. The tray is hinged at the bottom of the backrest.

3 X-Ray backrest cassette tray - In lowered position Loosen the locking screw (3) and position the x-ray cassette beneath its adjustable clamp. Use the spring loaded bracket (4) as an additional support for large cassettes. Adjust the position of the cassette as required and tighten the locking screw to secure it. Lift the tray and secure it again with the latch at the top of the backrest. Always re-tighten the locking screw when the cassette is removed. The x-ray backrest cassette tray can also be accessed from beneath the mattress platform.

The cassette tray stop-plate (1), which normally supports the x-ray backrest cassette tray on the mattress platform, can be turned to the side. Lower the cassette tray and then insert x-ray cassette as before.
WARNING Do not operate the backrest when the X-ray backrest cassette tray is lowered.
Pro-Contour The Pro-contour retracting and raising backrest system provides additional comfort for the patient by allowing the mattress to expand. When operating the backrest or auto-contour handset buttons, the base of the backrest slides progressively towards the head end of the bed and at the same time, the complete backrest rises away from the mattress platform.

Operation The bed height, backrest angle, Trendelenberg tilt angle and leg elevation functions are all electrically operated using two control handsets. To operate a function, press and hold the appropriate pushbutton until the desired position is achieved. To stop at the required position release the button.
WARNING Some functions may cause injury to the patient if unintentional movement occurs. See APC instructions for handset lockout to avoid unintentional movement. Patient Handset The patient handset is accessible to either the patient or the nursing attendant. From this handset the patient can control all bed functions except tilt and EPP. The patient handset controls bed functions as illustrated below.

In normal operation, all three lockout switches should be in the vertical (unlocked) position as shown above. To disable a bed function, rotate the appropriate switch 90° anticlockwise to the horizontal (locked) position. In this condition the selected push buttons are disabled on both the patient and attendant handsets.

Tilt Both Trendelenberg and reverse Trendelenberg tilt functions are achievable with the Contoura 480 series. Press the nurse handset Trendelenberg tilt button to adjust the bed to the required angle. The mattress platform may rise initially before tilting. This is to ensure that there is sufficient clearance between the mattress platform and the floor. If the bed is in the tilted position and the tilt button is pressed and held, the mattress platform pauses for two seconds on reaching the horizontal before continuing its movement. Batteries The bed is fitted with a back-up battery which allows the electrically-operated functions to be used for short periods while the bed is disconnected from the mains power supply, e.g. when the bed is being moved between wards. Switching between mains and battery power is fully automatic. To ensure that batteries are kept fully charged, the bed must be connected to the mains power supply at all times during normal use.

Manually Operated CPR To lower the backrest (2) in an emergency, lift the red CPR release handle (1) at the side of the bed. Some downward force may be required at maximum elevation, after that the backrest will lower under the patient’s weight.
CPR emergency release handle In addition to the CPR lever, there is also an EPP (Emergency Patient Positioning) button on the nurse handset. Press and hold this button to automatically return the bed to a flat, horizontal, low height position.
WARNING The backrest can fall quickly. Keep hands clear to avoid trapping.
WARNING Before using the EPP button on the nurse handset, make sure that all lockout switches on the ACP are in the vertical, unlocked position.

5. Cleaning WARNING Disconnect the bed from the mains power supply before cleaning. Gloves and protective clothing should always be worn when carrying out cleaning procedures. These instructions also apply to accessories but not to mattresses. Wipe all surfaces with a soft cloth moistened with hot water and mild detergent (or the hospital’s recommended cleaning solution). Take extra care with areas that may harbour dirt or dust. Rinse with clean water and dry with paper towels. To remove potentially infectious material such as body fluids, or when the bed has been used by someone with a known infection, clean afterwards with NaDCC (e.g. Presept, Actichlor) at 10,000 ppm of available chlorine. Rinse and dry. Allow the cleaned parts to dry before replacing the mattress.
Caution Do not use abrasive compounds or pads. Do not use hypocarbonate or phenolic cleaning solutions.
