1. Introduction ®

Huntleigh Healthcare’s CONTOURA 390 is an electrically operated acute care hospital bed with multiple functions to provide the best nursing position for both patient and carer. 2. Clinical Applications Areas of use

General medicine, general and specialist surgery, care of the elderly and oncology.

Indications

The bed is appropriate for high dependency patients who pose a movement and handling risk and / or whose clinical condition requires that they are positioned with minimal physical handling. Patients with a moderate amount of independence can, at the carer’s discretion, use the controls to adjust their own position.

Contra-indications

The maximum safe working load of the CONTOURA® 390 is 230kg.

WARNING The use of Trendelenburg and/or reverse Trendelenburg tilt may be contra-indicated for certain medical conditions. The tilt facility should only be used under the guidance of a clinically qualified person after assessment of the patient’s condition.

3. Installation Connect the electrical power cable to a suitable socket outlet. When not in use, or before moving the bed, wrap the electrical power cable around the two hooks (A) beneath the mattress platform at the head end of the bed.

WARNING Make sure that the coiled electrical power cable is not stretched excessively. Make sure that handsets and electrical power cables do not become entangled with moving parts of the bed. Disconnect the electrical power cable from the mains supply and store before moving the bed. An equipotential terminal (B) is provided on the mattress platform frame at the head end of the bed.

When other electrical equipment is within reach of the user or patient, the potential difference between the equipment can be equalised by interconnecting the equipotential terminals of each piece of equipment. 4

4. Operation Safety

• Always use a mattress of the correct size and type. A range of suitable pressure reducing and pressure relieving mattresses is available from Huntleigh Healthcare. • When the bed is operated, make sure that obstacles such as bedside furniture do not restrict movement. • Before operating the bed, make sure that the patient is positioned correctly to avoid entrapment or imbalance. • Always apply the brakes when the bed is stationary. • Lower the bed to minimum height when the patient is left unattended. • Keep these instructions handy for reference.

Brakes and Steering

There are two linked brake pedals at the foot end of the bed. With the pedals pushed down, the brakes are applied on the three braking castors. With the pedals horizontal, all four castors can rotate and swivel. With the pedals raised, one steering castor at the head end of the bed is locked so that it cannot swivel. Push the bed in the direction of travel so that the castors are all in line; then lift the pedals to engage the steering castor.

Folding Safety Sides (optional)

WARNING Safety sides must only be used with a mattress of the correct size and which is approved for use with the bed. The maximum recommended mattress thickness for use with these safety sides is 180mm. The clinically qualified person responsible should consider the age, size and condition of the patient before allowing the use of safety sides. Other manufacturer’s safety sides are not compatible with these beds.

Operation

To lower the side: Hold the top rail (A) near the foot end just behind the hinge. Pull the operating knob (B) and lower the side towards the foot end of the bed (C). As the side begins to lower, release the operating knob. C

Safety side operation To raise the side: Lift the top rail until the operating knob automatically “clicks” into its locked position at maximum height.

WARNING Ensure that the locking mechanism is securely engaged when the safety side is left in the upright position.

Bed Extension (optional)

To extend the bed: Apply the brakes. Use the control handset to raise the mattress platform to maximum height. Unscrew the two clamp knobs (D) on the underside of the mattress platform. Pull out the bed extension as far as it will go (E). Tighten both clamp knobs firmly (F).

To extend the mattress platform: Remove the two plastic pegs (G). Pull out the mattress platform extension (H), until the outer fixing holes are lined up with the holes in the mattress platform (J). Push the plastic pegs down through the holes to lock the mattress platform extension in position. G H

To retract the bed and mattress platform: Reverse the above procedures.

WARNING Both extension clamp knobs must be fully tightened at all times. Install a suitable mattress squab when the bed is extended.

Kneebreak Angle

The kneebreak angle can be manually adjusted whenever the thigh section of the mattress platform is raised. Lift the mattress retaining bar (K) to release the ratchet mechanism, then lower it until the calf section is at the required angle. Slightly lift the mattress retaining bar again to re-engage the ratchet mechanism and lock the calf section in position.

Bedstripper (optional)

The bedstripper, which is used for supporting clean linen when the bed sheets are being changed, is located at the foot of the bed. Pull the bar away from the bed as far as it will go.

Drainage Bag Rails

Two rails are provided for holding drainage bags, located below the seat section on either side of the bed. Attach suitable drainage bags to the hooks provided on the rails. Caution

The load on each drainage bag rail should not exceed 2kg.

Mattress Platform Sheets

The mattress platform is made up of perforated metal sheets that can be removed from the bed for cleaning or maintenance. The three main sections (backrest, thigh and calf) have a lip at one end and spring clips at the other. The central seat section has a clip on either side. Removal: lift the sheet to release the spring clips and detach the sheet from the frame. Replacement: hook the lip onto the frame and press down at the other end to engage the spring clips. Replacement (seat section): position the sheet and press down to engage the clips.

WARNING Take care not to trap hands or fingers when removing or replacing the mattress platform sheets. Ensure the mattress platform sheets are replaced correctly.

Power Operation Control Handsets

Two control handsets provide electrical adjustment of bed height, backrest angle and leg elevation. One handset can be positioned on either side of the bed for use by the patient; the second handset is located at the foot end of the bed for use by the attendant. When a handset pushbutton is pressed the appropriate bed function will operate until the pushbutton is released, or the limit of travel is reached. The Pro-Contourâ Advance pushbuttons control both backrest and leg elevation simultaneously.

Attendant Control Panel (ACP)

The ACP is fitted below the thigh section on the patient’s left-hand side and can be used to prevent unauthorised operation of the handset pushbutton controls. On the ACP is a rotary lockout switch for each bed function. Turn the appropriate lockout switch so that its pointer is horizontal. In this condition the selected pushbuttons are disabled on the control handset.

Tilt Facility

+ Backup Battery

Two additional pushbuttons on the attendant handset allow the tilt (Trendelenburg) angle to be adjusted. If the bed is in the tilted position and the tilt button is pressed and held, the mattress platform pauses for two seconds on reaching the horizontal before continuing its movement. The backup battery is automatically switched on if the bed is disconnected from the mains power supply. The battery will enable emergency power operation for short periods of time, for example when the bed is being moved between wards. Caution

To ensure that battery is kept fully charged, and prevent damage to the battery, the bed must be connected to the mains power supply at all times during normal use. 12

Manually Operated CPR

To lower the backrest in an emergency, lift the red CPR release handle (L) at the side of the bed. Some downward force may be required at maximum elevation, after that the backrest (M) will lower under the patient’s weight.

WARNING The backrest can fall quickly. Keep hands clear to avoid trapping.

5. Decontamination WARNING Disconnect the bed from the mains power supply before carrying out decontamination procedures.

+ Cleaning

These instructions also apply to accessories but not to mattresses or safety side pads. Wearing suitable protective clothing, clean all surfaces with a disposable cloth soaked in a neutral detergent and hand hot water. The head and foot end panels can be removed from the bed for cleaning. If the bed has detachable mattress platform sheets these can also be removed for cleaning. Start by cleaning the upper sections of the bed and work along all horizontal surfaces. Work methodically towards the lower sections of the bed and clean the wheels last. Take extra care to clean areas that may trap dust or dirt. Rinse with clean water and dry with disposable paper towels. Allow the cleaned parts to dry before replacing the mattress.

Disinfecting After cleaning the bed as described above, wipe all surfaces with sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) at a concentration of 1,000 parts per million (0.1%) of available chlorine. In the case of pooling body fluids, e.g. blood, the concentration of NaDCC should be increased to 10,000 parts per million (1%) of available chlorine. Refer to Huntleigh Healthcare’s Customer Infection Control procedures. Caution Do not use abrasive compounds or pads. Do not use phenol-based disinfectant solutions or alcohols.

6. Maintenance The following preventive maintenance procedures should be carried out at intervals of 12 months. All service or repair activities must only be performed by properly qualified and trained persons approved by Huntleigh Healthcare. Disposal of product and components should be compliant with local regulations.

WARNING Disconnect the bed from the mains power supply before starting any maintenance activity. If the backup battery is fitted, the bed will still operate when the handset buttons are pressed unless the function has been disabled on the ACP. Avoid skin contact with lubricants. General

Set the rotary lockout switches on the Attendant Control Panel (ACP) to the locked position. Refer to Attendant Control Panel instructions in Section 4 of this manual. Examine the bed for obvious signs of damage. All aspects of the equipment should operate as intended. Make sure that all nuts, bolts and other fastenings are tight and are not missing. Examine all flexible cables for cuts, abrasions, kinking or other deterioration. Make sure that the electrical power cable is not damaged. If either the plug or cable is damaged, both plug and cable must be replaced as a complete assembly.

Castors and Brakes

Apply the brakes and push the bed forwards. If any of the three braking castors rotate, the brake is not fully effective. Check the steering lock for efficient operation. If either the brakes or the steering lock are not working properly, contact an approved service agent. 16

Backup Battery

If a beeping sound is heard when operating the bed, this indicates that the battery is at low charge. Reconnect the bed to a mains power supply for a minimum of 24 hours so that the battery can recharge. Check the battery condition every six months using the following procedure: 1. Make sure that the bed has been connected to the mains power supply for an uninterrupted 24 hour period. 2. Disconnect the bed from the mains supply. 3. Apply a load of 80kg to the mattress platform. 4. Raise and lower the mattress platform, from minimum to maximum height, three times. 5. If the bed does not operate satisfactorily in step 4, perform steps 1 to 4 again. 6. If the bed continues to operate unsatisfactorily, it may indicate that the batteries need replacing. In this situation, consult an approved service agent.
