Foreword Thank you for purchasing ARJO equipment. Your Alenti lift and hygiene chair is part of a series of quality products designed especially for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care use. We are dedicated to serving your needs and providing the best products available along with training that will bring your staff maximum benefit from every ARJO product. Please contact us if you have any questions about the operation or maintenance of your ARJO equipment. Please read this manual thoroughly! Please read this manual in its entirety before using your Alenti lift and hygiene chair. Information in the manual is crucial to the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment, and will help protect your product and ensure that equipment performs to your satisfaction. Some of the information in this manual is important for your safety and must be read and understood to help prevent possible injury. ARJO strongly advise and warn that only ARJO designed parts, which are designed for the purpose, should be used on equipment and other appliances supplied by ARJO, to avoid injuries attributable to the use of inadequate parts.

Definitions in this manual:

Means: Safety warning. Failure to understand and obey this warning may result in injury to you or to others.

Means: Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to all or parts of the system.

NOTE

Unauthorized modifications on any ARJO equipment may affect its safety. ARJO will not be held responsible for any accidents, incidents or lack of performance that occur as a result of any unauthorized modification to its products.

Means: This is important information for the correct use of this system or equipment.

Service and Support A service routine must be performed on your Alenti every year by ARJO authorized service personel to ensure the safety and daily operation of your product. See chapter Care and Maintenance.

Safety Instructions The equipment must be used in accordance with these safety instructions. Anyone using the equipment must also have read and understood the instructions in this manual. If there is anything you are not sure about, contact your ARJO representative.

WARNING Never leave the resident unattended at any time. Ensure that the resident does not pull or hold on to stable objects such as grab rails, sinks and other equipment at any time.

Intended use This equipment is intended for lifting and transporting residents to and from a bathroom in a care facility and to assist with the bathing process. Alenti must be used by appropriately trained caregivers with adequate knowledge of the care environment, its common practices and procedures, and in accordance with the guidelines in the Operating and Product Care instructions.

WARNING Make sure Alenti is completely clear of all other devices, baths and furniture when they or Alenti are being raised or lowered. Make sure Alenti is at least 30 cm (1 foot) away from the bath tub.

Resident assessment We recommend that facilities establish regular assessment routines. Caregivers should assess each resident according to the following criteria prior to use: •

The resident’s weight should not exceed 182kg / 400 lbs. • The resident should be active or semi-active (i.e. able to sit upright selfsupported on the side of a bed or toilet). • The resident should understand and respond to instructions to stay seated in an upright position. If a resident does not meet these criteria an alternative lift shall be used. The useful life of this equipment, unless otherwise stated, is ten (10) years, subject to preventative maintenance being carried out in accordance with the instructions for care and maintenance found in this manual.

NOTE Modifications made to the equipment without expressed written consent of ARJO will invalidate the supplier's product liability.

To avoid the possibility of injury always ensure that: • • • • •

the equipment is used by appropriate trained staff. Alenti is lowered to its ergonomically correct height for the caregiver during transportation. Alenti is lowered immediately after removing residents from the bath. footcare is provided with Alenti in a lowered position. before lifting Alenti out of the water after the bath, reposition the resident if needed to ensure the resident is seated upright with their buttocks at the back of the seat, their back against the backrest and their hands on the handrest. Alenti is moved with care, especially in narrow passages and over uneven surfaces. the safety belt is always used and is in a good condition. the direction of driving during transportation is according to the illustration below.

Battery charger safety practices: • • •

When positioning Alenti, do not stand in the direction of the movement of the handrest. An unexpected movement of the arms upwards by the resident can injure the caregiver. See illustration below.

The charger is designed for dry areas only and for normal air humidity conditions. Don’t expose the charger to water or dust. The charger must not be covered.

Battery safety practices:

if there is a drain cover in the area where the lift is maneuvered, the drain cover must be smooth and set level with the floor. the slope of the floor does not exceed the ratio 1:50.

Use only the charger supplied with the equipment. Do not charge batteries in a sealed container. Be careful not to drop the battery. Do not place batteries near a heat source or fire. Do not short-circuit the battery. Do not store batteries at a temperature higher than 50 °C (122 °F). Do not crush, puncture, open, dismantle or otherwise mechanically interfere with the batteries. Should the battery casing crack and cause contents to come in contact with skin or clothing, rinse immediately with water. If contents come in contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention. Inhalation of the contents can cause respiratory irritation. Sensitivity of nickel can cause allergic asthma. Provide fresh air and medical attention. Contact the appropriate local authority for advice when disposing of batteries. Check labels on the battery.

WARNING Don’t expose the batteries or chargers to flames. Don’t expose the battery connector to water. Don’t use the charger in presence of inflammable anaesthetic gases. • • •

the wheels and brakes work freely. the wheels of the bed are locked when transferring a patient to/from Alenti. the storage of Alenti, when not in use, must not exceed a maximum humidity of 80% at 20 °C (68 °F).

Product description/function Lifting The lifting/lowering movement is performed by an actuator driven by an electric motor.

Central brakes The brakes are two cylinders, placed under the chassis, operated from the control panel or the handset. The brake action is achieved when the cylinders descend and make contact with the floor.

Control panel The panel (1) has four control buttons, marked as follows: •

Arrow pointing upwards, for raising Alenti.

•

Arrow pointing downwards, for lowering Alenti.

•

Dark red brake symbol, for activating the brake, indicated by flashing light.

•

Green brake symbol, for releasing the brake.

Handset The handset (2) has an integrated hook which makes it easy to attach to various parts of Alenti. •

Unhook the handset and hold it in your hand.

•

Press the "up arrow" button on the handset in order to raise Alenti.

•

Press the "down arrow" button on the handset in order to lower Alenti.

•

Press the dark red button to activate the brakes. Indicated by a flashing light.

•

Press the green button to release the brake.

Driving handles and positioning handle •

Use the driving handles (3a) when moving Alenti.

•

The driving handles can be rotated backwards (3b).

•

Use the positioning handles (4) for adjusting Alenti to a bath or bed.

Backrest The backrest (1) can be placed on either the right or left driving handle. Remove the backrest by pulling it upwards. See illustration. Before the resident takes place in Alenti; •

Choose from which side of the bath Alenti will be positioned.

•

If Alenti will be placed on the left side of the bath, place the backrest on the left handle.

•

If Alenti will be placed on the right side of the bath, place the backrest on the right handle.

Safety belt The safety belt should always be inspected before use to make sure it is in good condition, without any loose threads, tears or other defects. The safety belt should be attached before the resident sits in Alenti. a

Place the backrest as described above.

Insert the end plate of the belt through the hole in the seat (2). Place the clip on the upper part of the driving handle without backrest (3).

c

Let the resident sit on the seat.

d

The residents hands should be placed on the handrest.

e

Place the belt around the resident's waist (4).

f

Fasten the clip on the rear driving handle on the advised place next to the backrest (5).

g

Tighten the safety belt (6).

h

Make sure that the resident is sitting straight upright, with their buttocks at the back of the seat - with their back against the backrest and with the hands on the handrest (7-8).

NOTE Make sure the resident is positioned correctly on the lift and the safety belt is secured.

Emergency Stop If, for any reason, Alenti does not respond to the control buttons, you can quickly stop lift movement by pressing the button on the battery and disconnect it (1 ). Contact your local ARJO representative before re-using Alenti.

Emergency High/Low If, for any reason, Alenti does not respond to the control buttons, raise or lower Alenti by using the Emergency High Low. a

Unplug the handset (2).

Control Alenti by pressing a blunt, thin object into the holes at the panel. (i.e. a pen) (3).

•

Press it into the hole next to the ”up arrow” in order to raise Alenti. Press it into the hole next to the ”down arrow” in order to lower Alenti.

•

NOTE A continuous beeping sound is heard during action “up” and “down”.

Contact your local ARJO representative before re-using Alenti.

CAUTION Do not use an object with sharp tip when pressing in the holes.

Accessory description Battery charger Attach the battery charger (1) to a suitable wall and connect it to a wall socket.

WARNING The battery charger is designed for use in a dry location and should not be installed in bathrooms, etc. See separate instruction.

Scale (optional) The scale (2) is integrated and located on the lift pillar. See the seperate scale instruction.

Bedpan and bedpan holder (optional) a

Fit the bedpan into the holder (3a).

The bedpan holder fits onto the back of the seat of Alenti (3b).

c

Fold up the bedpan holder handle into locked position (3c).

Leg support (optional) The Leg support assists caregivers when providing footcare to residents seated in Alenti. a

Attach the leg support to the hand rest with the support resting between the resident's legs, against the flat knob under the seat lip (4a).

Thread the plastic fasteners on the straps onto the bar (4b).

All footcare provided to a resident while on Alenti must be performed with Alenti in a lowered position. To avoid back strain, we recommend that caregivers sit to perform footcare (4c).

Once the leg support is properly installed, the resident's legs should be held at a convenient height for the care assistant with the aid of the straps. The height of the straps can be adjusted using a series of holes to attach the straps to the bar. The angle of the resident's legs can also be varied with the straps.

Transferring the resident Before the resident is transferred onto Alenti, ensure that: a

The backrest is placed on the correct side of Alenti. See instruction on page 10.

b

The safety belt is mounted on Alenti. See instruction on page 10.

c

The resident is undressed but robed (with the opening in the back).

After transferring the resident, always ensure he or she is in a correct sitting position.

WARNING To avoid risk of injury, ensure the resident keeps their hands on the handrest when raising and lowering Alenti, as well as during transportation.

WARNING Always pay close attendance to the resident during transferring,transporting and bathing.

From Alenti to a standing position a

Lower Alenti until the resident's feet are in contact with the floor (2).

b

Activate the brake.

c

Fold back the handrest.

d

Release the safety belt and help the resident to stand up.

From a Standing And Raising Aid a

Fold back the handrest on Alenti.

b

Place the lift with the resident in front of the seat of Alenti.

c

Position Alenti as close as possible to the other lift, with the resident right over the seat of Alenti.

d

Activate the brake on Alenti.

e

Lower the resident until he/she reaches the seat of Alenti (3).

f

Unhook the sling and position the handrest in front of the resident so that he/she can hold onto it.

g

Raise Alenti until the resident's feet are free from the other lift. Take that lift away.

h

Remove the sling.

i

Make sure the resident is in an upright position in the centre of the seat. Secure the resident with the belt.

j

Raise Alenti to a height, which is convenient for moving the resident (4).

From a standing position a

Activate the brake.

Fold back the handrest on Alenti.

c

Adjust the height of Alenti so that the height of the seat corresponds with the back of the resident's knees (1).

d

Have the resident back up to the Alenti and feel the chassis gently against the back of their heels/ legs.

e

Help the resident to sit down.

f

Position the handrest in front of the resident so that he/she can hold onto it.

g

Make sure the resident is in an upright position in the centre of the seat. Secure the resident with the belt.

h

Raise Alenti to a height which is convenient for moving the resident.

i

Transport the resident and Alenti to the bath using the driving handles.

To a Standing And Raising Aid Perform the “from a Standing And Raising Aid” instructions in reverse order when transferring the resident back to a Standing And Raising Aid. When making the procedure in reverse order make sure that the brake is activated on the Standing And Raising Aid and not on Alenti during the transferring.

From wheelchair For the resident to be able to move from a wheel chair (1), the individual must be strong enough to move themself sideways and/or be able to stand up. a

Apply the wheel brakes on the wheelchair.

b

Rotate the handrest on Alenti out of the way.

c

Position Alenti and lower so its seat is lower than the wheelchair seat.

d

Apply the brake on Alenti.

e

The resident can now move himself/herself from the wheelchair to Alenti.

f

Position the handrest in front of the resident so that he/ she can hold onto it.

g

Make sure the resident is in an upright position in the centre of the seat. Secure the resident with the belt.

h

Raise Alenti to a height, which is convenient for moving the resident.

To a wheelchair For the resident to be able to move to a wheel chair, the individual must be strong enough to move himself or herself sideways and/or be able to stand up. • •

LowerAlenti so that the seat is higher than the wheelchair seat. Perform the “from wheelchair” instructions in reverse order when transferring the resident back to wheelchair.

WARNING Make sure that the brakes are activated both on Alenti and the wheelchair during the transferring.

To the toilet Alenti can be used regardless of whether the toilet is attached to the wall or to the floor. (2). Position Alenti directly over the toilet bowl (3). Lower the seat and apply the brakes.

From bed (procedure A)

From bed (procedure B)

For the resident to be able to move directly from the bed the individual must be strong enough to move himself or herself sideways and/or be able to stand up.

If this procedure is to be used the following resident assessment must be true:

a

Make sure that the wheels of the bed are locked.

b

Let the resident sit upright at the side of the bed.

c

Rotate the handrest on Alenti out of the way.

d

Position Alenti and lower so its seat is lower than the bed (1).

e

Apply the brake on Alenti.

f

Let the resident move himself/herself from the bed to Alenti (2).

g

Position the handrest in front of the resident so that he/she can hold onto it.

h

Make sure that the resident is sitting straight upright, with their buttocks at the back of the seat - with their back against the backrest and with the hands on the handrest. Secure the resident with the belt.

•

The resident’s weight should not exceed 182kg / 400 lbs. • The resident should be active or semi-active (i.e. able to sit upright unsupported on the side of a bed or toilet). • The resident should understand and respond to instructions to stay seated in an upright position. If a resident does not meet these criteria an alternative lift should be used. a

Attach the safety belt to the chair according to the instructions.Drop the bedrail and turn the resident onto their side. Push the backrest and handrests on Alenti back and place the seat over the bed, as close to the resident as possible. See illustration (3). Lower the seat so that it is pressed firmly against the bed.

Apply the brake on Alenti.

c

Turn the resident onto their back and ensure that they are positioned correctly on the seat. Place the handrest in front of the resident.

d

Help the resident to sit upright, either manually or with the aid of the back part of the bed.

To bed

e

Position the backrest behind the resident.

For the resident to be able to move to a bed, the individual must be strong enough to move himself or herself sideways and/or be able to stand up.

f

Make sure that the resident is sitting straight upright, with their buttocks at the back of the seat - with their back against the backrest and with the hands on the handrest. Secure the resident with the belt (4).

g

Raise Alenti to a height, which is convenient for moving the resident.

h

Pull the Alenti away from the bed or other device while supporting the resident's legs (5). Make sure the lift is completely clear from the bed and other devices. Lower the Alenti to a convenient height.

The resident should keep their hands on the handrest.

LowerAlenti so that the seat is higher than the bed. Perform the “from bed” instructions in reverse order when transferring the resident back to bed. Make sure that the wheels of the bed are locked and the brake on Alenti is activated during the transfer.

To bed Perform the "From bed" instructions in reverse order when transferring the resident back to bed. NOTE: Apply the brake before transferring the resident from Alenti to the bed.

Bathing a

Lower the bath to its lowest position.

Position Alenti diagonally to the side of the bath and raise Alenti to an appropriate ergonomic hight for assisted bathing (1).

Help the resident to move his/her legs over the edge of the bath while rotating the lift away from the bath (6).

Make sure Alenti is completely clear from the tub and other devices to avoid undesired contact between these. Lower Alenti until the resident's feet are in contact with the chassis.

Help the resident to move his/her legs over the edge of the bath while rotating the lift in place (2).

d

Position Alenti in the middle of the bath, docking it- with the leg of the Alenti against the end of the leg of the tub.

e

Raise the bath to a height where the edge of the tub is about the waist height of the caregiver (3).

Lower Alenti to a convenient bath depth

WARNING Always remove residents from the bath by completely lowering the tub and raising Alenti only to the extent necessary to clear the tub. Make sure Alenti is at least a foot away from the bath tub or other devices. Always lower Alenti promptly after removing the resident from the bath.

WARNING Make sure the resident's legs are stretched out in front of them, and not trapped under the chair seat!

WARNING Before lifting Alenti out of the water after a bath, re-position the resident if needed to ensure that the resident is sitting upright in the centre of the chair.

If desired, and the resident is capable, you have the option of releasing the safety belt and rotate the backrest and/or the handrest out of the way, allowing the resident to recline against the back of the tub (4).

Bathe the resident.

WARNING

After bathing, open the drain.

Never leave the resident unattended at any time.

Place the armrest in front of the resident. Re-position the resident and raise him or her to an upright position in the centre of the seat. Rotate the backrest in place.

Lower the bath to its lowest position.

m Shower the resident (5). n

Dry the resident and place towels to keep him or her warm and comfortable.

Make sure that the resident is in an upright position in the centre of the seat. Secure with the belt.

Raise Alenti to a position where the seat well clears the edge of the tub.

Shower the resident's feet and dry them, as well as the underside of the seat, to prevent water from dripping on to the floor when moving Alenti away from the bath.

Scale (optional) Display functions

Verification

Upper indicator • Shows weight in kg or lbs. • - shows when negative weight (see daily use). Unit • Kg or lb. • B/G =Brutto/Gross = indication of the weight in total (Net weight plus tare weight). • NET=Netto= B/G minus tare weight (e.g. accessories). Menu functions • Shows OPERATION other function only when calibrating Lock symbol • If shown, contact Arjo Service Department. 0-symbol • On, when the scale is in zero range. (± 25g ; 0.05 lbs). Dual range symbol • L = Low: 2 - 120 kg (4- 264,6lbs). • H = High: 4 - 182 kg ( 10- 400 lbs). • The symbol is on for weights over 120 kg (264.6 lbs). Min symbol • Shown when the load is below 2 kg (4 lbs). Max symbol On when the load is above 182 kg (400 lbs). If the scale is overloaded: Remove the load immediately. Don’t move the lift until the symbol is automatically switched off.

All scales for medical purposes have to be verified within EU markets. The verification is documented by sealing marks under the cover and the notified body’s verification mark. Re-verifications should be performed according to local regulations. CAUTION If the seals are broken then the scale must be disqualified and not used again until reverification has been carried out.

Battery symbol Not in use. Power is supplied by the main battery.

Labels and indicators On the data label you will find the following information: • standard approval certificate no. • Article number • W1=Range scale 1: 2 - 120 kg (± 100g) W1=Range scale 1: 4 - 264.6 lbs (± 0.2 lbs) • W2= Range scale 2: 4 - 182 kg (± 200g) W2= Range scale 2: 10 - 400 lbs (± 0.5 lbs) • d= actual scale division • e=verified scale division The values are equal in this scale.

Verification labels

After verification the following labels are to be found on the scale:(The marking in some countries may be different due to local regulations) • Seal marks • Authorized body’s verification mark • CE mark and year of 1st verification • Green M mark This scale fulfils the regulations of EN 45501/OIML R76-1. The certification is according to the Council Directive 90/384 EEC, Non-automatic Weighing Instrument Directive.

Calibration Only on markets outside EU. Regular checks ought to be done as well as recalibration, if necessary. Calibrations should be performed according to local regulations.

Weighing unit The pre-installation of Alenti Scale is kg. If you want to change from kg to lbs or vice versa, press the button for about 10 seconds. NOTE The weighing unit can not be changed on a verified scale.

Daily use; scale

NOTE Make sure that the lift is in a horizontal position, because the display on a verified scale will show "TILT" if the lift isn’t horizontal.

Method B. The resident is already sitting on the chair when the scale is activated (3-4):

NOTE To get the net weight of the resident, all accessories must remain on the chair.

There are two methods to weigh the resident with Alenti Scale:

If the display shows any figures, push the button again. The display will then show 00 (net mode).

Method A. The scale is activated before the resident will enter the chair (1-2):

When the resident leaves the chair, the display shows a negative value = the weight of the resident.

Do not touch the chair , pillar or the resident during the procedure, because these are all integral parts of the weighing instrument. The display is activated for 4 minutes. After that, the procedure has to be restarted.

NOTE To get the net weight of the resident, place all accessories on the chair before pushing the button. 1

Push the button.
