i About this Manual General This manual is intended as a guide to the operation, servicing and maintenance of the product. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the statements made are accurate, no responsibility can be accepted for any editing errors or omissions contained herein. This manual’s descriptions do not describe the operational requirements of any laboratory system into which this product may be incorporated. Reference should be made to other system applicable documentation.

ii Safety Information This equipment can potentially cause a hazard through exposure to contaminated (used) filters, manual lifting, high voltages1 and high-torque rotating fan where access panels are opened during servicing. Failure to observe the following recommendations will constitute a SAFETY OR ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD.

Protective Earth This Chemical Storage cabinet must be earthed. Maintenance and Repair Repair, adjustment or maintenance with safety or normally fixed covers removed whilst the cabinet is under voltage should be avoided. Skilled personnel only, aware of the potential hazards involved, should carry out these operations. No user-serviceable parts are incorporated in this equipment. Containment & Operator Protection Chemical Storage Cabinets are designed as highly efficient local exhaust ventilation (LEV) products to enable users meet COSHH 2002 requirements. These products are not designed to be used in applications where ‘true’ Fume Cabinets or Biohazard Safety cabinets should be used. Safe, acceptable levels of vapour/fume containment and operator protection can only be provided whilst the cabinet is fully operating, developing a negative air pressure internally under normal conditions. Environment The product is not designed or certified for use in a potentially explosive environment as defined in Atex Directive 94/9/EC. Additionally, it should not be relied upon to provide safe containment in the event of a fire or explosion caused by flammable fluids stored in the cabinet. The end user must carry out adequate risk assessment to determine the hazards posed by the processes to be undertaken. Temperature range: 50C to 310C Humidity: Max RH 80% for temperatures up to 310C. 1

Bigneat Chemical Storage Cabinets 1.0

Introduction

The Bigneat range of chemical storage cabinets is designed to remove vapours, purify the air and enhance the long-term health of laboratory personnel. Evaporation from both spills and open containers considerably contributes to poor air quality within a laboratory environment. Bigneat Storage Cabinets are designed to overcome these everyday problems and can be supplied as a fully portable cabinet or as a ducted installation, all fitted with the Chemcap™ Fan-Filter housing (less lighting and AMS alarm) comprising a 2-stage, high efficiency (99.99%) filtration system. 1.1 Operator Protection During normal operation, room/laboratory air is drawn through the apertures at the front of the enclosure by the high-performance dynamically balanced centrifugal fan. This creates the required negative pressure environment within the cabinet. The airflow passes through the pre-filter, then the Enviro™ Carbon filter and finally recirculated back into the room/laboratory air space exhausting as fully filtered clean air. This volume air exchange is repeated continuously and in the process will enhance the quality of the room/laboratory air making it a safer, more pleasant place to work. 1.2

Visual and Low Noise Quality

Cabinet types CS834, CS844 and CS854 include transparent, UV-resistant acrylic door(s), which provides excellent containment and visibility of the materials, stored inside the cabinet. Noise generated by the fan and airflow is less than 50 dB (A). 1.3

Cabinet Identity

The cabinet is fitted with a Rating and CE Mark Label, which uniquely identifies the equipment. This label should not be removed, as evidence of original Quality Assurance Tests and CE Mark integrity may be affected.

Bigneat Chemical Storage Cabinets 3.0 Re-assembly instructions: CS834, CS844 and CS854 models Carefully remove the outer packaging from the cabinet- (take care when using scissors or knives to cut through packing material). Do not remove the carbon Filter from individual packaging until the cabinet is fully assembled. • Position the cabinet onto a firm, level surface with the rear panel adjacent to a flat wall. • Locate the Top Panel (Item 6) onto the top of the enclosure, secure with screws, (Item 9) and washers (Item 10) • Open the hood of the Fan/Filter Housing (Item 7) and place the Pre-filter (Item 5) into the pre-filter frame within. • Place the carbon filter (Item 4) into the Filter Housing of (Item 7) • Lift and locate the Fan/Filter Housing (Item 7) centrally within the Top Panel (Item 6) and secure with screws (Item 9) and washers (Item 10) • Place the Shelves (Item 2) within the enclosure, in the desired positions using the stainless steel shelf brackets • (Item 2A), 4 per shelf. • Refer to Figure 1 for general arrangement

Installation-general:

The cabinet must be used indoors, where the temperature should be between 15° to 31°C(RH 75%). It must be placed on a firm, level surface or securely fixed to a wall using the brackets supplied. Models CS834, CS844 and CS854 must be secured to an adjacent rear wall when in position to prevent the risk of toppling when fully loaded with chemical containers. Keep doors (or sliding windows) closed at all times, except when removing and replacing chemical containers. Your cabinet is supplied fitted with a specific filter type, if you need to change the predominant chemical types being stored, ensure that premature saturation and breakthrough of the original filter does not occur. Keypad Indicators & Controls

The control panel keypad has the following indicators...

• POWER: Green LED. This illuminates when power is applied to the system. If it remains extinguished, then there is no incoming power to the cabinet. • FAN: Green LED. This illuminates when the fan is set to run, and is extinguished if the fan is set to OFF. • LIGHT: Green LED. This illuminates if the optional cabinet lighting is set ON, and extinguished if the lighting is set to off. • SERVICE DUE: Amber LED. This illuminates constantly ON (fixed no flashing) if the cabinet is now due a service, otherwise it remains extinguished. • SERVICE OVERDUE: Red LED. This illuminates flashing ON/OFF if the cabinet is overdue a service, otherwise it remains extinguished. • FAN KEY: press once to turn the fan on, press again to turn the fan off. •

LIGHT KEY: press once to turn the light on, press again to turn the light off.

Commissioning.

After connecting to the electrical supply, operate the storage cabinet fan by pressing the fan keypad on the control panel. The green led will now be illuminated and the fan running.

3.4 Setting Airflow (face velocity) and Calibrating the AMS Alarm (where fitted) General: For the following commissioning procedures the cabinet should be fitted with a new chemical filter of the type suitable for capturing the chemical vapours, which will be encountered when using this cabinet and must be emptied of all chemical containers. Ensure that the acrylic door(s) are closed. The internal fan should be allowed to run for several minutes in order to stabilise, after which measurements and adjustments may be made as follows: Face velocity measurements are used to establish that the storage cabinet continues to meet design standards and that no significant deterioration in performance has occurred since previous factory acceptance tests or future servicing. The fan speed and AMS calibration have been pre-set during factory acceptance testing to provide face velocities for specific models as detailed in Table 1, however, if re-adjustment is required carry out the following procedures: a) Model CS812 Measure air changes below the filter grille. Readings should be taken over a 30 sec. interval b) Model CS822 Measure the inflow face velocity at the intake slots of the sliding doors. Readings should be taken over a 30 second interval noting the highest and lowest values at multiple measurement points c) Models CS834, CS844 & CS854 Measure the inflow face velocity at the base section air intake holes using a calibrated, ‘hot-wire’ type anemometer. c) Apply fan speed re-adjustment required by rotating the slotted shaft of the potentiometer-type controller located at the rear of the Fan/Filter housing (in line with a 8mm hole) adjacent to the IEC mains input socket). Adjust either clockwise to [increase] fan speed or counter-clockwise to [decrease] fan speed. AMS Alarm Calibration(optional item) Preparation: Setting the alarm calibration point is to be carried out in conjunction with setting airflow face velocity. Refer to Section 3.6 for details.

Bigneat Chemical Storage Cabinets 3.5 Alarm Monitoring System-Where Fitted The integrated Bigneat electronic airflow monitoring system alarm is fitted as an option only to CS822, CS834 CS844 and CS854 cabinet types. It is a programmable solid-state air velocity-sensing system with both audible and visual LED outputs. It has been designed specifically to accurately monitor airflow velocities of the storage cabinet. It is important to understand the meaning of the indications of the coloured leds when they illuminate as follows:

ALARM KEYPAD & INDICATOR PANEL

AIR SAFE condition When the airflow velocity is above the preset limit the Air Safe (green led) will illuminate continuously and remain constant all the time the airflow velocity in the cabinet remains within preset limits. The cabinet can be used to safely store chemicals under these conditions. AIR ALARM condition When the airflow velocity is at or below the alarm point, then the Air Alarm (red led) will flash ON/OFF slowly and the green led will extinguish, whilst the buzzer pulses at the same rate as the red led. When this alarm condition occurs, the storage cabinet will no longer be able to provide the filtration level and subsequent containment required, until the fault is investigated and rectified. If the fault cannot be remedied promptly and the cabinet remains in alarm condition a warning sign must be affixed to the cabinet to clearly warn other users of the reduced efficiency and the consequences this may have. The design incorporates a nominal 10-second delay before the level of the airflow is evaluated. This programmed delay before sampling commences is designed to reduce ‘nuisance tripping’ of the AMS during normal movement at the access aperture. Note. If the alarm condition is due to failure of the airflow sensor in the alarm unit, then the red led illuminates constantly (no flashing). This will require attention by service personnel. 3.6 Setting the AMS Airflow Alarm Calibration Point This procedure combines both setting of the airflow face velocity and alarm point calibration. To set up and calibrate the airflow Alarm, carry out the following procedure: On power up (power reset) of the cabinet: Assuming a previous calibration has been done, the green led will illuminate and the red will be extinguished. If no prior calibration has been carried out at least once, then the system will enter calibration mode automatically, with the red & green led alternately flashing. 3.6.1 Calibration of the Alarm Point 1) Press and hold down the Mute button for 6 seconds until the buzzer sounds and the red & green led flash alternately. 2) Adjust the airflow face velocity (measured in m/s) directly at the base section intake holes until the desired minimum velocity value (alarm point) is reached. Adjust the fan speed controller accordingly. 3) Leave the system in its present state for at least 2 minutes. During this calibration period ensure that no airflow turbulence caused by operator movements or room air is created at or near the intake slots/holes of the enclosure throughout this calibration process. 4) Press the Mute once more. The Alarm unit will exit Calibration & acknowledge with a single beep of the buzzer if all is OK, and then begin airflow monitoring. If the calibration fails then the AMS will remain in calibration mode, and will report the alarm type using a rapid fire burst of audible pulses from the buzzer. 5) Return the cabinet airflow face velocity to the normal (mean) operating value by readjusting the fan speed controller accordingly. 6) Confirm that the AMS alarm responds correctly to these settings by slowly opening an acrylic door and check that the alarm activates both audibly and visually at the minimum airflow velocity level set at (2). Close the door, after a short period the alarm will cease. To temporarily stop the audible alarm feature at any time following calibration press the MUTE button once.

3.7

Containment Efficiency.

It is inappropriate to apply containment testing to BS EN 14175-4:2003 using SF6 gas to this type of filtration cabinet on site. However, qualitative measurement of the airflow profile at the face of the CS822, CS834 CS844 and CS854 type cabinets, operating at the correct face velocity and in a specific room environment can be evaluated by smoke visualisation testing. A smoke pencil generating a trace should be placed approximately 400mm in front of the air intake slots of the CS821 or the base section intake holes of the CS822, CS834, CS844 and CS854 cabinets facing upwards. The tracer should be moved across this frontal region of the cabinet from left to right not faster than 0.2 m/s. The airflow profile should show a smooth, continuous airflow entering the intake slots/holes. There should be no evidence at any point of smoke being significantly disrupted or otherwise deflected counter to the inflow or delay in entering the intake holes. If tests show significant disturbance to the airflow profile then room air velocity must also be checked to ensure it is not greater than 0.2m/s.

Bigneat Chemical Storage Cabinets 4.0 Operating the Chemical Storage Cabinet. Important! The chemical storage cabinet must have been installed and commissioned in accordance with appropriate paragraphs of section 3.0 of this manual before attempting to operate. • Press the FAN key on the control panel to ON (Fan LED will illuminate). • If fitted, press LIGHT key on the panel to ON (Light LED will illuminate). The fan speed will quickly stabilise at the level preset during commissioning, however, during this period the AMS airflow system (if fitted) will audibly and visually alarm until the airflow velocity has reached the calibrated setting. The level of containment protection afforded by the storage cabinet is affected by the manner in which it is used. The cabinet will safely and continuously contain vapours from stored chemical containers but must be used as part of a comprehensive laboratory safety routine. Good laboratory practice should be adopted and include the following: • Adequate planning and understanding the function of the storage cabinet. • Keep the base section front intake holes or door slots free from any obstruction. • Keep the front acrylic door(s) closed during storage of chemicals

• Keep the cabinet fan operating at all times that chemicals are stored, to ensure that chemical fumes do not build up inside

• Understanding the consequences of a blocked filter and/or low airflow velocity to the containment efficiency of the storage cabinet affecting operator safety in the laboratory/work room. •

You can safely store noxious and odorous chemicals in these cabinet types.

• Avoid mixing incompatible substances in the same cabinet in case leakage allows these substances to mix and produce hazardous vapours or gases. Store acids in a dedicated acid tolerant cabinet. • Store severe poisons in a dedicated poison cabinet • All chemicals should be labelled and dated • Regularly check for leaking or deteriorating containers

Bigneat Chemical Storage Cabinets 5.0 Service Indicators (all models) The control panel keypad has the following Service information indicators...

• SERVICE DUE: Amber LED. This illuminates constantly ON (fixed no flashing) if the cabinet is now due a service, otherwise it remains extinguished. • SERVICE OVERDUE: Red LED. This illuminates flashing ON/OFF if the cabinet is overdue a service, otherwise it remains extinguished. 5.1 THE SERVICE TIMER: Initialising/Resetting. a) The Service Due date is a fixed value of 12 months from the date of initialisation/resetting. b) The Service Overdue date is a fixed value of 13 months from the date of initialisation/ resetting. To reset/initialise the service clock... • Press and hold down the LIGHT key until the service DUE & OVERDUE leds flash alternately. This takes 6 seconds. • Now release the LIGHT key. The lighting will change state during this process (i.e it will turn on if already off, and vice-versa). • Press the FAN key once... The service DUE & OVERDUE leds will extinguish if the clock has reset OK, and the system will return to normal operation. If the clock did not reset, the leds will continue to flash and the enclosure power will have to be cycled to put the controls in normal operational mode. NOTE: during the periods when a service is not due, the SERVICE DUE / SERVICE OVERDUE leds are used to confirm that the real time clock on the control PCB is updating and working OK. Approximately once per minute, these 2 leds pulse in sequence for a fraction of a second. If this pulse sequence does not occur, there is a fault on the control PCB.
