BASIC ANAESTHETIC MACHINE FUNCTION
YES
NO
Identify On/ Off switch
Check suction jar and tubing are fitted correctly and working
Check AGSS is connected to hospital scavenging system and check float is visible in the window
Identify auxiliary O2 therapy meter and check it is functioning Ensure O2 sensor is attached correctly
Ensure flow sensor tubing and patient airway flow sensor are attached and not damaged
Attach appropriate breathing circuit to be used
CYLINDER AND PIPELINES
YES
NO
WITH THE MACHINE SWITCHED OFF
After disconnecting pipelines and turning off all gas cylinders check each cylinder individually by turning on and ensuring the gauge registers an adequate supply of gas
Turn off each cylinder in turn and check there is no observable movement of the gauge over 1 minute
Reconnect pipeline supplies and check pressure gauges show hospital pipeline pressure
FLOWBLOCK ASSEMBLIES
YES
NO
Turn all flow control knobs on and check no gas flow shows on flow block assembly
Switch the machine ON
Check that no gas flows are registered on any of the flowblock except for the O2 flowblock assembly
Adjust flow of gases through their full range, ensuring no erratic float movement
Ensure correct operation of the hypoxic guard
Ensure bellows and absorber are attached correctly Identify common gas outlet
Check Cylinders are securely and correctly mounted
1
OXYGEN FAILURE WARNING CHECK
YES
NO
Shut off O2 cylinders and pipeline, leave other gas supplies on and the flow control set to deliver > 1 l/min ensure that as the remaining oxygen is depleted the O2 failure warning whistle is activated
VAPORIZORS
YES
NO
Fit the appropriate vaporizer to the back bar ensuring locking mechanism is fully engaged
Check the control knob rotates through the full range
With vaporizer off, set a flow of O2 (6-8l) and temporarily occlude the common gas outlet. Check that the O2 flowtube dips and that there are no leaks from any of the vaporizer fitments
Check for all vaporizers to be used
Repeat with each vaporizer turned on. There should be no liquid leak from the filling port
VENTILATOR
YES
NO
Switch the ventilator on Carry out the system check as per instructions
During ventilation demonstrate changing of Soda lime using absorber bypass switch
Change monitored parameters on screen
From the waveform select menu, select pressure volume loops or flow volume loops
Save a loop to use as a reference Demonstrate how to change modes of ventilation
Change parameter settings such as breaths per minute, I:E ratio, tidal volume and pressure limit
Change between adult and paediatric modes
Change flow sensor from patient to absorber and confirm the position on the ventilator
Adjust alarm limits, mute time and apnoea times
Carry out the compliance check as per instructions
Place ventilator into standby mode and carry out oxygen calibration Power down the system
