Press Change ambient data and enter actual values. Press Calibrate Flowmeter and follow calibration guide using a 3 litre syringe. If gain factors are outside the range 0.9 to 1.1 calibration shall be repeated. If still outside then replace the flowmeter screen and repeat calibration. Press Calibrate Oxygen and follow calibration guide. Expose gas sample line to air by removing it from breathing assembly. If “Flow-gas delay” shows a red reclamation mark then press Calibrate Flow gas delay and follow calibration guide using a subject who performs slow expirations/fast inspirations. If a green check mark with a yellow warning is shown (as shown on the picture above), it means the flow-gas calibration is not up-to-date, but will be found online. All the calibrations above shall be performed once a day before performing the MBW tests – i.e. setting of ambient data and calibration of flowmeter and Oxygen sensor. Press OK (to Exit Prepare)
Select patient or press New Pt. to enter a new subject.

Connect the patient using a new respiratory bacterial/viral filter. Press Test to start the MBW test, and ask the subject to breathe normally.
Select as default Auto for bag filling and press Select. If a subject feels uncomfortable when breathing, it sometimes helps to increase the bag size ratio from 1.5 to 2.0.
Press Prepare Bag when the subject has reached a steady breathing – look at the VT. Press Wash-in when ready, and guide the subject to breathe normally. If the subject is capable to receive breathing instruction, it is recommended to guide the subject to breathe deeper or empty the bag at each inspiration in the beginning of the wash-in until the mixing index comes below approx. 10%. Thereafter guide the subject to breathe normally. This will reduce the wash-in time.

Observe wash-in. If the CO2 during inspiration exceeds 2.5% a message “Time to replace scrubber” is shown on the display – in which case the CO2 scrubber shall be replaced. When the scrubber is not used, be sure to save it in a sealed plastic bag. A leak can be seen during wash-in by down-going spikes on the insoluble curve, in which case the patient mouth piece and nose clip shall be inspected in order to remove the leak. The software automatically goes to washout when ready. At this time the subject shall again be guided to breathe normally.
Observe the washout. If the subject has a leak during washout (seen during wash-in) or coughs during the washout the manoeuvre is aborted by pressing the Stop washout button, and a new manoeuvre is started. The new manoeuvre can be started immediately. The software automatically stops when the washout is completed. The subject can disconnect from the mouthpiece – if wanted – when the bag is prepared for the next manoeuvre. If the FRC varies less than 25% between manoeuvres a √ is shown on these results.
