Basic unit
Configuration/variants
The Cato is manufactured a a ceiling-mounted unit and as a mobile unit.
Features of the ceiling-mounted unit:
•
additional crossarm with ceiling mount and optocouplers
•
membrane keypad for control integrated in the handles of Cato
•
Optocoupler PCB (in the crossbeam above the PM 8050 CD)
It is designed as a 3-gas unit (O2, N2O, and Air) and comes with ORC low
flow and low-flow flowmeters.
Cylinder supply
An optional high-pressure kit can be retrofitted. This kit consists of two 11-L
gas cylinders (O2 and N2O). The high pressure regulators (200 bar/5 bar for
O2 and 60 bar/5 bar for N2O) are located on the gas cylinders. The cylinder
pressure can be read on the pressure gauges of the respective pressure regulator. The connection to the unit is made via high-pressure coiled tubes. O2
and N2O are supplied to the mechanical gas flow control through non-return
valves.
Central supply
O2, N2O, and Air (2.7 to 5.5 bar) are supplied via three ISO connectors
located on the back of the unit. The pipeline supply pressures are indicated
on pressure gauges located above the flowmeter block.
Mechanical gas flow control
Additional pressure regulators decrease the O2 and N2O pressures to 3 bar
and the Air pressure to 1.5 bar, and the gases are delivered to the flowmeter
block for metering, depending on the operating mode. Downstream of the
flowmeter block the gas mixture flows through the Vapor anesthetic vaporizer. After enrichment with Halothane, Enflurane, Isoflurane, Sevoflurane, or
Desflurane, the fresh gas is available at the fresh-gas outlet.

Integrated pneumatics
Cato
The integrated pneumatics replaces the conventional mechanical gas flow
control. It combines the functions of the following individual components:
•
Non-return valves
•
Nitrous oxide shut-off
•
Control valve
•
Alarm valve
•
Mean-pressure regulator

An aluminum block is divided into three levels and each level is assigned a
gas (O2, N2O, Air). The pneumatic connection of the individual elements is
ensured by channels with the block. This methods saves approx. 50% of
plug-in connections compared to the mechanical gas flow control. The valves
are designed as compact components. Short switching paths and the lack of
diaphragms reduce the rate of wear and increase the reliability and life of the
assembly.

Non-return valves
The non-return valves prevent any gas exchange between the cylinders and
the pipeline gas supply as well as a loss of gas when the connections are
open.

When the gas supply is open, the container is filled with gas through the nonreturn valve. The oxygen pressure present keeps the alarm valve closed. The
alarm valve opens when the oxygen pressure falls below 1.7 bar. The oxygen
stored in the container flows through the injector to the whistle. The injector
draws ambient air thus prolonging the alarm time. The audible alarm sounds
for approx. 7 seconds.

Control valve (Air)
and nitrous oxide
shut-off
O2 and N2O are supplied at a pressure of 3 bar. Air pressure is reduced to
1.5 bar. The 3-bar pressure is necessary for the downstream ORC.
There are two possible operating modes:
•
Anesthesia operation
•
Operation during the final phase of anesthesia or in the recovery room

The control valve and the nitrous oxide shut-off are supplied with pressure via
the oxygen line. The control valve closes, Air cannot be supplied. The nitrousoxide shut-off is opened by the pressure present. O2 and N2O are available
at the flow control valves on the flowmeter block.
Apart from functioning as a switchover valve, the nitrous-oxide shut-off has
an additional function. If the oxygen supply fails or if the operating pressure
falls below the minimum level of approx. 2 bar, the spring closes the valve
and interrupts the nitrous-oxide supply.

Gas selector set to Air
The control valve and the nitrous-oxide shut-off are not activated. Venting
occurs via the gas selector. The control valve opens in this position. The
nitrous-oxide shut-off closes thus interrupting the nitrous-oxide supply. O2
and Air are available at the flow control valves on the flowmeter block.

ORC - Oxygen Ratio
Controller
The ORC has 2 functions:
•
It is responsible for the oxygen concentration in the fresh gas.
•
The ORC closes the nitrous-oxide branch in the event of oxygen failure.
WARNING
Up to 0.8 L/min N2O can be supplied via the bypass in the low-flow
range.
O2 and N2O flows are controlled by the flow control valves on the flowmeter
block. Restrictors located at the inlet ports of the flowmeters generate backpressures when gas is flowing. The backpressure level varies with the opening degree of the flow control valves and the value of the restrictors. The
backpressures exert a force on the diaphragm of the ORC, as a result thereof
the O2 pressure opens the ORC valve and the N2O pressure closes it. The
restrictors and the spring force are dimensioned such that a minimum concentration of 25 vol.% O2 is ensured. The restrictors limit the maximum O2
flow to approx. 9 L/min.

Bypass:
A minimum O2 flow of 0.3 to 0.8 L/min is required to open the nitrous oxide
branch. This ORC opening behavior makes working in the low-flow range
more difficult as mixed-gas flow control is not possible in the lower flow
range. A non-adjustable restrictor of 0.8 L/min in the nitrous-oxide branch
solves this problem. The safety function of the ORC is disabled in this flow
range.
1.8
S-ORC - Sensitive
Oxygen Ratio Controller
The S-ORC has 2 functions:
•
It is responsible for the oxygen concentration in the fresh gas.
•
The S-ORC closes the N2O branch in the event of oxygen failure.
Copyright reserved.
O2 and N2O flows are controlled by the flow control valves on the flowmeter
block. Restrictors located in front of the flowmeters’ inlet ports in the S-ORC
proportional valve generate backpressures while the gas flows. The backpressure level varies with the opening degree of the flow control valves and
the value of the restrictors. The backpressures exert a force on the diaphragm of the S-ORC, as a result thereof the O2 pressure opens the S-ORC
valve and the N2O pressure closes it. The restrictors and the spring force are
dimensioned such that a minimum concentration of 21 vol.% O2 is ensured.
The restrictors limit the maximum O2 flow to approx. 9 L/min.
