1. Introduction Thank you for purchasing the EyeControl device from EyeFree Assisting Communication Ltd.! The EyeControl is an assistive communication device for those with speech and physical disabilities. Via eye tracking and an audio- menu, the device enables the user to choose their desired communication and transmit their choice to an output speaker. The wearable device is lightweight and portable and offers immediate, 24/7 communication. To ensure the optimal performance of this product, please take the time to read this manual carefully.
1.1. Explanation of Admonitions In this manual three (3) levels of admonitions are used. They will appear as follows: Is used for notifying the user of something important or of something that needs special attention. Is used to inform of something that could cause harm to, or malfunction of, the equipment.

1.3. Intended use The device is intended for use as an assistive communication device for those with speech and physical disabilities. The intended purpose is to compensate for lack of speech due to stroke, disease, traumatic brain injury or handicap. The product should only be used as described in the User’s Manual. Please read the User’s Manual and other supplied documentation thoroughly before using the product. The EyeControl device does not sustain or support life. In the case of failure of the EyeControl device, the user will not be able to use it in order to communicate.

Only use the items included in the EyeControl package, those described in the product documentation and other approved EyeControl Accessories in conjunction with the EyeControl.
2. Safety The EyeControl has been tested and approved as compliant to all the Specifications and Standards listed in the Compliance Information section at the end of this User Guide. Nevertheless, in order to ensure safe operation of your EyeControl device, there are a few safety warnings to bear in mind. If any part of the EyeControl device is broken or damaged, please contact customer support before operating the device. We recommend that the EyeControl unit be removed from the user during user transfer (e.g. transfer from chair to bed).
2.1. Usage Warning The EyeControl device is composed of several components as described in the user manual and should Page 7 of 59
be used according to manufacturer instructions. Do not apply excessive pressure or force to any part of the device. Connecting, or by other means using any other component than advised in the user manual may damage or injure a person or their property and is done entirely at the user’s own risk. The unit should be fitted on the user according to manufacturer instructions. Fitting the head mount onto a user is done entirely at the user’s own risk. EyeFree Assisting Communication or its agents are not liable for damage or injuries to a person or their property due to a head mount being dropped in any configuration.
2.2. Device Placement During use, the main unit should be placed securely on a table beside the user. Do not cover the main unit with any materials while the device is in use.
2.3. Emergency Warning The EyeControl device is to be used for communication purposes only. Be aware that due to the low, but possible risk of failure, the EyeControl should not be relied upon nor used in dangerous or otherwise critical situations. Page 8 of 59
2.4. Child Safety The EyeControl system is an advanced computer system and electronic device. As such it is composed of numerous separate, assembled parts. In the hands of a child some of these parts may become detached from the device, possibly constituting a choking hazard or another danger to the child. Young children should not have access to, nor use of the device without parental or guardian supervision.
2.5. Infrared Warning When activated, the EyeControl emits pulsed infrared (IR) light. Certain medical and other devices are susceptible to disturbance by IR light and/or radiation. Do not use the EyeControl device when in the vicinity of such susceptible devices as their accuracy or proper functionality could be impaired. Do not use the EyeControl at the same time as another device which uses infra-red lighting or it may interfere with the performance of the device.
2.6. Electromagnetic interference The EyeControl device uses certified products and follows the protocol for electromagnetic devices. In case Page 9 of 59
of electromagnetic interference that may lead to a malfunction, the power button will illuminate red to notify the user that there is an error. If the power button illuminates red, please contact support.
2.7. Epilepsy Warning Some people with photosensitive epilepsy (PSE) are susceptible to epileptic seizures or loss of consciousness when exposed to certain flashing lights or light patterns in everyday life. This may occur even if the person has no medical history of epilepsy or has never had any epileptic seizures. A person with PSE would also be likely to have problems with TV screens, some arcade games, and flickering fluorescent bulbs. Such people may have a seizure while watching certain images or patterns on a monitor, or even when exposed to the light sources of an eye tracker. It is estimated that 3% to 5% of those diagnosed with epilepsy have this type of epilepsy. Many people with PSE experience an "aura" or odd sensations before a seizure occurs. If you, or the wearer of the head mount, feel odd during use, turn off the device and remove the head mount.

2.8. Do Not Open the EyeControl Device Do not open any part of the EyeControl device. Noncompliance will result in loss of warranty. There are no user serviceable components inside. Contact EyeControl Support if the EyeControl device is not working properly.
2.9. Eye Tracking When first getting used to the device some people may experience a certain amount of fatigue (due to intentional eye focusing and hard concentration) or even a dryness of the eyes (due to less frequent blinking). If you experience fatigue or dry eyes, start off slowly and limit the length of your sessions to your comfort level. Moisturizing eye drops can be helpful to relieve dryness.
2.10. Connectors The main unit has external interfaces (connectors). Connecting any other device or connector than those intended may cause personal injuries and/or damage the EyeControl device. EyeFree or its agents are not liable for any damages or injuries to a person or their property due to connecting unintended connectors.

2.11. Cable Warning The provided power cable should only be used to connect the main unit to a power source. Do not use the power cable for any other purpose or for connection to any other devices. Only use the power cable provided with the EyeControl and labeled with the EyeControl logo to connect the main unit to a power source. Use care when routing the device cable and power cable to avoid tangling and a possible tripping hazard. EyeFree or its agents are not liable for any damages or injuries to a person or property due to wrong use of the provided cables.
2.12. Environment The EyeControl system is designed for use in dry indoor environments. Avoid any exposure to direct sunlight as this will affect eye tracking quality and longer exposure can overheat the equipment. Avoid exposure to any liquids, gels, moisture, rain, sweat or other damp materials or environments. Avoid use of the device near water. The device complies with IP Class 22 and has no protection against objects smaller than 12.5 mm. Keep the eye tracker in a clean and dust free environment. When using the equipment take adequate precautions Page 12 of 59
against dust and dirt. Do not place or use the equipment in areas subject to extreme temperatures and humidity, such as on top of, and/or near a heating element, in a hot or damp room, or in a hot automobile in the sun. Usage temperature: 0℃ to +40℃ / 32℉ to 104℉. Do not charge, power on, or use the device near combustible fuels or chemicals, such as at a gas station.
2.13. Battery Warning The EyeControl device includes a rechargeable lithiumion battery. Lithium-ion batteries can explode or cause fire if they are used or charged incorrectly or if they are defective. Do not short circuit the battery poles. Do not expose the battery to water nor humidity. Do not expose battery to heat, direct sunlight, solder, or fire. Immediately disconnect the device and contact support if, during operation, it emits an unusual smell, feels hot, change shape/dimensions, or behaves abnormally. To recharge the battery, use only the provided cable, specifically designed for the purpose and comply with the recharging instructions specified in the user manual. Charge the battery under supervision and do Page 13 of 59
not place combustible materials close to or on top of the battery nor the charger as this may result in overheating, explosion or fire. CAUTION: Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Do not attempt to change the battery. For service, please contact EyeControl at www.eyecontrol.co.il
2.14. Transportation Always use proper packaging material to transport the device and provide added protection.
2.15. Accessories Only use accessories provided by or approved by EyeFree.
2.16. Radio Transmission Warning The main unit contains radio transmitters and receivers (WLAN and Bluetooth). Make sure the device is placed as far as possible from any equipment or objects sensitive to those signals. Keep a distance between the user`s body and the main unit.

3. Usage Conditions The EyeControl is designed for 24/7 use. and may be worn in conjunction with most other head mounted devices (such as a CPAP). However, some of the following conditions may affect performance.
3.1. Light conditions We recommend that the device be used in a controlled and well-lit environment. Sunlight should be avoided as it contains high levels of infrared light which may interfere with the eye tracking system. Sunlight affects eye tracking performance severely and prolonged exposure to sunlight can overheat the eye tracker. The eye tracker is not designed for exposure to (direct) sunlight. Eye tracking generally does not work in strong direct sunlight. Shielding the eye tracker adequately from the sun may prevent sunlight from interfering with eye tracking.
3.2. Eyelashes Long eyelashes can be obstructive when the user’s eyes are not fully open, especially if the user is wearing mascara. In rare cases, eyelashes may completely block Page 15 of 59
the view of the user’s pupils, making eye tracking impossible.
3.3. Eye Make-up Eye makeup may interfere with the eye tracking capabilities of the device. It is recommended to avoid the application of mascara and eye liner when operating the EyeControl.
3.4. Droopy eyelids Droopy eyelids or otherwise obstructive eyelids can block the view of the participant’s pupils. In rare cases, such eyelids may completely block the view of the participant’s pupils, making eye tracking impossible.
3.5. Eye glasses and contact lenses The EyeControl device may be used in conjunction with standard eye glasses, but reflections on the glass may interfere with eye tracking. Bi-focal lenses may cause interference with the eye-tracker. Standard contact lenses may be worn. Colored or decorative lenses that change the appearance of the pupil or iris should be avoided as they may make eye tracking impossible.

3.6. Color blind The EyeControl device may be operated by a user who is color blind, although there is a possible limitation in the user’s ability to interpret the LED indicators on the main unit.
3.7. Cataracts The EyeControl may be operated by users with cataracts, although there may be a reduction in performance.
3.8. Range of motion limitations The EyeControl device is operated by tracking the user’s right eye. If the user does not have full range of motion with the right eye, the device will be inoperable. The device design requires that the user have full range of eye movement: up, down, right, left and blink. Note: The default operation of the device requires the ability of 5 gestures: up (back), down (select), left (previous), right (next) and blink (speak). 3.9. Usage while in motion There may be a reduction in performance if the device is used while in motion.
3.10. Power Use an accessible outlet and make sure the cords are properly placed to avoid the risk of tripping. Never use damaged power cords. When possible, we recommend using the device while it is connected to a power outlet.
3.11. WLAN/Bluetooth connectivity WLAN signal quality is affected by different environmental factors such as the distance between the main unit and the router, the presence of walls, windows, furniture and other objects, and the presence of other WLAN devices and networks in the same area. A weak or low-quality WLAN signal will decrease the quality of connection during support mode and while performing software updates. * The EyeControl is compatible with 2.4GHz WLAN networks. Bluetooth signal quality is affected by different environmental factors such as the distance between the main unit and the tablet/computer. A weak or lowPage 18 of 59
quality Bluetooth signal will decrease the quality of operation with Bluetooth connected devices. Any device such as PC or tablet that will be paired to the EyeControl device shall be compliant with the International Safety Standard for Information Technology Equipment, IEC60950/IEC 62368.
3.12. Keeping the controller software up to date EyeFree Assisting Communication Ltd. will release updates for the EyeControl software that will improve performance and/or introduce new functionality. At any time, the user may check for software updates by following the detailed instructions (section 7.7 below).
4. Getting to know EyeControl The EyeControl is designed for use as an assistive communication device. The device includes the lightweight EyeControl head mount with attached eye tracking camera and a small main unit with speaker. The EyeControl head mount must be fitted onto the user’s head. The system must then be adjusted to the user, following the instructions in the user manual. Page 19 of 59
4.1. System components The EyeControl device is made up of several components. All components that are in direct contact with the user are designed from bio-compatible materials so as not to cause discomfort or irritation to the user. Each component is briefly described below. •

Wearable eye tracker, referred to as the head unit. Head unit includes head mount, camera and bone conduction earphone. Main unit, which is permanently connected to the head unit. The interior of the unit houses the battery, processor and speaker of the device. The exterior has power and volume controls and indicator lights. 4.1.1. Head Unit The head unit is a highly sophisticated eye tracking device. It consists of several very sensitive sensors and must be cared for as instructed for it to work properly.
