WARNINGS
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE
DANGER - To reduce the risk of electrocution:
• Always disconnect the HC220 series immediately after using.
• Do not use the HC220 series while bathing.
• Do not store the HC220 series where it can fall or be pulled
into water.
• Do not place or drop the HC220 series into water or other
liquid.
• Do not reach for an HC220 series that has fallen into the
water. Unplug immediately.
WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, electrocution, fire or
injury:
• Do not touch the heater plate. The heater plate temperature
may exceed 65° C(149° F)
• The HC220 series should not be left unattended when
plugged in.
• Close supervision is necessary if the HC220 series is used by,
on, or near children or invalids.
• Use the HC220 series only for its intended use as described
in this manual.
• Never operate the HC220 series if it has a damaged power
cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has been
dropped or damaged, or any part of the HC220 series has
been dropped into water. Return the HC220 series to an
authorised service center for examination and repair.
• Keep the power cord away from heated surfaces.
• Never drop or insert any object into any opening or tube.
• Do not use outdoors or operate where aerosol (spray)
products are being used.
• Connect the HC220 series to a properly grounded outlet only.
See Grounding Instructions.
• Remove humidification chamber before filling, and fill
humidification chamber with distilled water only. See
Getting Started.
• At low CPAP pressures, the flow through the mask may be
insufficient to clear all exhaled gas from the tubing, and
consequently some rebreathing may occur.
• Adjusting the pressure control can result in ineffective therapy.
The pressure control must only be adjusted by the clinician.
• Equipment not suitable for use in the presence of flammable
anaesthetic, mixed with air or oxygen or nitrous oxide.
•
The HC220 series should only be used with masks and
connectors recommended by Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, or
by your physician or respiratory therapist. A mask should not
be used unless the HC220 series is switched on, and
operating properly. The vent hole(s) associated with the mask
should never be blocked.
CAUTION
• Do not use your HC220 series in close proximity to high
frequency apparatus, shortwave or microwave equipment.
Emissions from such devices may effect the HC220 series'
operation.
• Never block the air openings of the HC220 series or place it
on a soft surface such as a bed or couch, where the
openings may be blocked. Keep the air openings free of lint,
hair or the like.
OXYGEN USE
If supplemental oxygen is used with the HC220 series, the oxygen flow must be turned off when the HC220 series is not operating. This ensures that oxygen will not flow through the tube and
accumulate in the HC220 series enclosure.
• The HC220 series should be located in a position where
ventilation around the device is not restricted.
• It is recommended that supplemental oxygen be administered
at the mask.
• Oxygen should not be used while smoking or in the presence
of an open flame.
• The use of oxygen in therapy requires that special care be
taken to reduce the risk of fire. Any materials which will burn
in air and some that will not are easily ignited and burn rapidly
in high concentrations of oxygen. Accordingly, for safety it is
necessary that all sources of ignition be kept away from the
product and preferably out of the room in which it is being
used. "NO SMOKING" signs should be prominently displayed.
• A spontaneous and violent ignition may occur if oil, grease or
greasy substances come in contact with oxygen under
pressure. These substances must be kept away from oxygen
regulators, cylinder valves, tubing and connections, and all
other oxygen equipment.
• At a fixed flow rate of supplemental oxygen flow, the inhaled
oxygen concentration will vary, depending on the pressure
settings, patient breathing pattern, mask selection and leak
rate.
DO NOT DISCARD
Cleaning & Maintenance
NOTE: The HC220 series should be cleaned as required.
1. Switch off the HC220 series and unplug from the power socket.
2. Wipe the exterior of the HC220 series with a clean, damp (not wet) cloth and mild dishwashing detergent. Note: do not use harsh
abrasives or solvents, or these may damage the HC220 series.

NOTE: Models labeled as Class II (Double Insulated) are marked with the
symbol and do not require grounding. The following applies
to Class I (three wire) models only.
The HC220 series should be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing
an escape wire for the electric current. The HC220 series is equipped with a cord having a grounding wire with a grounding plug. The
plug must be plugged into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded.
DANGER - Improper use of the grounding plug can result in a risk of electric shock.
Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether
the HC220 series is properly grounded.
Extension Cords:
If it is necessary to use an extension cord, use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a three-blade grounding plug, and a 3-slot receptacle
that fits the HC220 series plug. Replace or repair a damaged cord.
In Canada/USA only:
This product is for use on a nominal 120V circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated (Figure 1). A temporary
adaptor, may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adaptor
should be used only until a properly grounded outlet (Figure 1) can be installed by a qualified electrician. The green coloured rigid ear, lug,
etc extending from the adaptor, must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Whenever the
adaptor is used, it must be held in place by the screw.

Making The Most Of Your HC220 Series System
Some users, when first using CPAP therapy, find the airflow uncomfortable. To help you fall asleep comfortably, the HC220 series provides a gradual increase in pressure and humidity if required. We call this feature warm-up. Warm-up can be used with or without heated
humidification. To use warm-up, follow these simple steps:
USING THE HC220 SERIES WARM UP MODE
1. When the HC220 series is switched on (See 'Getting Started'), it will automatically deliver your set pressure (the green warm-up
light will be off).
To activate warm-up mode simply press the warm-up button on the front of the HC220 series (the green warm-up light will turn on).
When warm-up mode is activated, it will allow you to fall asleep as the HC220 series gradually increases the pressure and humidity
to your personal settings. This will take approximately 20 minutes.
Note: To deactivate warm-up mode, simply switch off the HC220 series (See 'Getting Started'), pause for a few seconds, then switch
it back on.

CPAP therapy often dries out the nasal passages, sometimes causing discomfort for the user. Clinical studies have shown that heated
humidification helps to reduce this discomfort and can help the user to benefit more from CPAP therapy.
You are able to adjust the amount of humidity that the HC220 series generates by adjusting the humidity control on the front of the unit.
Humidity
Control
Occasionally, some users prefer not to use heated humidification. Heated humidity can be
disabled by setting the humidity control to the 'off' region.
Off Region
Ambient Tracking™
The HC220 series is equipped with Ambient Tracking™, the next generation in CPAP humidification. During the night, room
temperatures often drop. When this occurs, heated humidification users commonly notice excess condensation gathering in the tubing.
To overcome this, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
has developed Ambient Tracking™.
Through advanced electronics, Ambient
Tracking ™ automatically adjusts the heater
plate temperature as the room temperature
changes. Condensation is minimized while
humidity is maximized.
Compliance Monitoring
Sometimes CPAP users find that when they wake in the morning, they have taken their
CPAP mask off while they were sleeping. CPAP therapy is only effective while the user is
wearing the mask.
Clinical studies have shown that the use of heated humidification increases the amount of
time that CPAP is used overnight, which is why Fisher & Paykel Healthcare have designed
the HC220 Series.
Compliance monitoring provides you and your medical practitioner with the information you
need to assess your progress with CPAP therapy.
When the HC220 Series is first turned on, the compliance display will show the following
pieces of infomation for 8 seconds each before returning to the default display - set pressure.
Compliance Display
1. Machine on time (identified by the hr symbol)
This is the total number of hours that the HC220 Series has been switched on (this includes hours with the mask on and hours with
the mask off).
Example:
634 hr
This means that the HC220 Series has been switched on for a total of 634 hours.
2. Average hours of use per night (identified by the hr/
symbol) (HC221 only)
This is the average number of hours that the HC220 Series has been used with the mask on each night.
Example:
7.4 hr/
This means that the HC220 Series has been used with the mask on for an average of 7.4 hours per night.
3. Check sum (identified by the
symbol) (HC221 only)
This is a number which can help your medical practitioner to check that the other values are correct.
Example:
564
Your medical practitioner or homecare provider may ask you to give them this number for reporting
purposes.
4. Set pressure (identified by the cm H2O symbol)
This is the pressure which the HC220 Series is set to in cm of H2O – for pressure measurement.
Example:
This means that the HC220 Series has been set to a pressure of 9.5 cm H2O. Note: The display will con9.5 cm H2O
tinue to show only set pressure. To see the other information, simply turn the HC220 Series off, pause for
3 seconds, then turn it back on.

Frequently Asked Questions
When I wake up in the morning, my nose and throat feel dry. What can I do?
Try increasing the setting on your humidity control. If this does not help, please contact your clinician for advice.
How do I prevent condensation in the tubing?
The humidity control enables adjustment of humidity, so that there should be fine misting in the six inches of the breathing tube closest to
your face. If the humidity control is set too high for the conditions, condensation may occur in the breathing tube. Note: Using greater
than 6' (183 cm) of tubing will increase condensation.
There are several ways of reducing condensation in the tube:
1. Ensure the HC220 series is not positioned in a cool draft.
2. Insulate the tubing by positioning it under the bedcovers, by using the 900HC003 rainout reduction kit, wrapping it with flexible bubble
wrap, cut the toes out of tube socks and bunch them around the tubing.
3. Warm the air in the room.
4. Turn the temperature control on your HC220 series down slightly. Gradually decrease the setting until the condensation no longer
occurs.
Do I have to use distilled water with my HC220 series?
The use of distilled water will maximize the life of the HC345 water chamber. Water from the faucet will often contain minerals which can
damage the chamber, causing pitting in the base, even if the water is passed through a filter.
Can I use my HC220 series in other countries?
Yes. Simply use the appropriate electrical socket adaptor and the HC220 series will automatically adapt to any voltage supply.
Note: When moving your HC220 series, ensure that the water chamber is empty. Machine failure due to water damage is not covered by
warranty.
Squeeze the filter
holder to remove.
How do I replace the air filter?
Remove the filter from the holder as shown:
Note: When inserting the new filter, ensure that the black dot is facing towards the machine.
Removing the Filter
Can I use oxygen with my HC220 series?
Yes, oxygen can be administered at the mask. Turn the HC220 series on before turning on the oxygen. Ensure that the oxygen source is
turned off before turning off the HC220 series to avoid oxygen accumulating in the machine.
When do I replace my HC345 water chamber?
Replace the chamber if the plastic walls of the chamber become cracked or cloudy or the chamber base becomes pitted. (Note: If the
chamber leaks at all, it should be replaced immediately).
