Software Upgrade Instructions: Overview
Overview Upgrade the Solar 9500 software using a PC connected to the network.
PC Requirements The PC must be running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows NT, or Windows 2000. It must have a CDROM drive, a network card, Pentium II or higher, and 64MB of RAM. Use cable PN 408997-001 or a standard Cat. 5 network patch cable for the network connection between PC and the Unity MC Network. 127(For Windows 98 systems, only one network adapter is allowed. The PC IP network configuration must be on the same subnet as the Solar 9500 units you are upgrading. For example: If Solar 9500 units are 3.20.109.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 then, the PC must be 3.X.X.X netmask 255.0.0.0 The instructions provide details on this process.
Networked Units Upgrade one Solar 9500 (You need to know the IP address. Refer to the Solar 9500 Information Monitor Service Manual for IP address information.) and use it as a source for exporting software and defaults to other units. After upgrading one Solar 9500, the new software can be exported to all Solar 9500 units over the Unity MC Network.
Non-Networked Units
Option 1: Create a mini-network using a 10 BASE-T concentrator (as shown below) to export the new software, or
Option 2: Use a Ethernet crossover patch cable (PN CLV5-1236XR-04-10, 10 feet) to export the new software to one unit at a time from the PC. Connect to Unity Network MC Ethernet Port

Upgrade Software Connect to Network
For networked units, connect the PC to the Unity MC Network using cable PN408997-001 or standard Cat. 5 network patch cable.
For units with a mini-network (option 1) connect the PC to the network concentrator using cable PN408997-001 or standard Cat. 5 network patch cable.
For non-networked units (option 2) connect the PC to the Solar 9500 Unity MC network connector using Ethernet crossover patch cable (CLV5-1236XR-04-10).
Change IP Address 1. Power up and log onto the PC. 2. Manually change the IP address to match your Unity MC Network as follows. Manual IP Address Change Windows NT or Windows 98
Windows 2000
a. From the tool bar click Start → Settings → Control Panel. b. Click the Network icon in the Control Panel window. c. On the Protocol (or Configuration) tab, select the appropriate TCP/IP Ethernet adapter for your network card. d. Select Properties. e. Click Specify an IP address. f. Type the appropriate IP address and Subnet Mask. g. Click OK. h. Click OK. i. Click Yes to restart the PC and launch the application.
a. From the tool bar click Start → Settings → Network and Dialup Connections. b. Right click Local Area Connection. c. Select Properties. d. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). e. Click Properties. f. Click Use the following IP address. g. Type the IP address that matches your Unity MC Network and Subnet Mask. For example: IP Address: 126.126.126.126 Netmask: 255.0.0.0 h. Click OK. i. Click OK. j. Restart the PC.
Verify Communication with Solar 9500 “Ping” the Solar 9500 from the PC to verify communication. 1. At the PC, select Start -> Run... 2. Type CMD and press Enter. 3. At the C:> prompt type: ping<space>xxx.x.x.xx (where x = the Solar 9500 IP address) and press Enter. Information in the cmd window indicates that the Solar 9500 is replying to the ping. If communication is unsuccessful, failure messages appear. (e.g. Destination host unreachable)

Launch Application 1. Insert the software CD in the CDROM drive. The application automatically launches. 127(If the application does not launch in 60 seconds, double-click the respective CDROM drive and launch the application. If the application still does not launch, double-click the CDROM drive, double-click the bin folder, and double-click autostart.exe. 127(Depending on your IP Address, an IP Address Change window may open. DO NOT select Yes to automatically change the IP address to 126.126.126.126. Select No in the IP Address Change window. You have already manually configured the IP address to match your Unity MC network.
Select No to manually Change IP Address.
2. Proceed to “Solar 9500 Network Services Tool” on page 4.

Solar 9500 Network Services Tool From the following window export the new software files as follows.
1. Under Configuration Types select Software (only available option). 2. To select a Solar 9500, you MUST type in the Unity Network IP address of the Solar 9500. Units and Beds buttons are nonfunctional. Under Internet Address type the IP address for one of the beds you want to upgrade. (Refer to the Solar 9500 Information Monitor Service Manual for IP address information.) 127(Upgrading software may be accomplished by upgrading one, two, or all three software files. Compare the three software file versions and revisions on the CD to the existing software on the Solar 9500. It is only necessary to upgrade files that are not at the latest version. 3. Select the appropriate files from the Software list. 127(Upgrade may take approximately 20 minutes. 4. Click Export. 5. Click Yes at the confirmation prompt.

Software Upgrade Instructions: Upgrade Software Watch the file export process in the Files Pending and Files Transferred sections of the window. The Files Transferred section lists the success/ failure status of each export, and also provides a history of all files transferred. 127(Do not close or cancel the window during export unless you want to stop the process. If you select close or cancel, a prompt asks if you want to terminate export. You may minimize the window during the export process. 6. When all upgrade files display Success in the Files Transferred window, click Cancel or close the window. 127(There is a delay between the time upgrade files display Success at the PC and the availability of the files for activation at the Solar 9500. Allow several minutes for the files to unbundle. 7. Click Yes at the prompt. If the IP Address Change window displays asking if you want the IP Address restored, select No. 8. You can now remove the CD and manually restore the IP address using the steps on page 2. A message appears indicating that you have 15 seconds to save data and close all applications before an automatic restart. 127(On a Windows 98 system, a message appears asking if it’s Ok to reboot. Click Ok to close Windows and the existing application. Wait about 15 seconds until the Task Manager window displays, then click End Task to restart. 9. On the Solar 9500 being updated, manually re-enter parameter default information after software is activated. Go to “Print Parameter Defaults” on page 6.

Print Parameter Defaults Print the parameter defaults as follows. &$87,21 The Service Menu is intended for use only by qualified personnel. Unnecessary tampering with Service Mode Menu options for experimentation purposes may cause a malfunction of the equipment and is not recommended by the manufacturer. 1. Starting from the MAIN menu select Setups -> Configuration/Service... -> Service Mode... 2. At the numeric touchscreen keypad, enter the day and month using leading zeros. (July 4 = 0407) The Service Menu screen displays. 3. Under Unit Defaults, select Parameters... 3

Software Upgrade Instructions: Record Alarm Graph Setup 4. Select Print to initiate a printout of the saved user default settings for all of the available parameters. Do not make any changes to the parameters.

5. Select Close. 6. At the Service Menu, select Print System Settings to print the alarm graph setup record. (Software version 2D or later.) 7. Close the Service Menu.
Record Alarm Graph Setup If the software version is 2D or greater, the Alarm Graph Setup information is in the System Settings printout so recording the following information is not necessary. Select Setups -> Alarm Graph Setup -> Configure Window, then Alarm Graph Config to record the following information.

Software Upgrade Instructions: Activate Software
Activate Software Do NOT activate software while actively monitoring a patient. &$87,21 If you have upgraded and activated software version 3A and are attempting to downgrade and activate a software version previous to 3A, be sure that the bed layouts for all active displays do not contain a BIS waveform. If any bed layouts contain new V3 waveforms, and earlier software is activated, the system will go to Houston. Do not attempt to use a bed layout that contains a BIS waveform on a software version earlier than V3 or the system will crash. 1. At the Solar 9500 where you upgraded new software, enter the Service Mode Menu as instructed page 7. 2. Under Network Services select Activate Locally... A window similar to the following displays.
127(When you select configuration type Software, a list of received software files displays. The software must be activated to be used. It may take up to 30 minutes for the received software to display in the Software list. 3. Select Software, then select the new software files. 4. Select Activate. Acknowledge the query. The following takes place when software is activated:
A test is performed on the selected software set to see if the proper versions are available for activation,
The system deactivates the current software being replaced. The new software is activated and a system restart occurs, and The inactivated software is made available for reactivation.

Software Upgrade Instructions: Manually Enter System and Parameter Defaults
Manually Enter System and Parameter Defaults After upgrading software, manually enter and save the information from the alarm graph setup and the parameter defaults printout from that unit. Refer to chapter 3, “Setups Menu”, in the operator’s manual for help re-entering parameters.
Export New Version Software and Parameter Defaults When the Solar 9500 with the updated software is running and defaults are re-entered, software and parameter defaults can be exported, or “pushed” to the other Solar 9500(s). 127(Manually re-enter alarm graph settings at each Solar 9500.
Software 1. At the Solar 9500 running the new software, enter the Service Mode Menu as instructed on page 7 of these instructions. 2. Under Network Services select Export To The Network... A window similar to the following displays.

Software Upgrade Instructions: Export New Version Software and Parameter Defaults 3. Under Remote Hosts select the unit name and the destination bed to receive the new software. Or enter the IP Address (e.g. 126.1.2.3) to identify the destination. 4. Under Configuration Types select Software. Only one configuration type (e.g. Software) can be selected for export at a time. A list of all the currently installed software files displays in the Software list. 127(The software consists of S9500 OS, S9500 SYSTEM APPS, and S9500 MONITOR APPS. All three software components must be present at each Solar 9500. Each software component is followed by the version. 5. Select the new software files from the list. 6. Select Export to send all selected files. When the export is complete, a window listing the success/failure status of each export displays. 7. Choose to Print or Dismiss (close) the window.
Parameter Defaults 1. Under Network Services select Export To The Network... 2. Under Configuration Types select Parameter defaults. 3. Under Parameter defaults list select Parameter/Alarm Unit Defaults. 4. Select Export to export all of that unit’s parameter defaults and alarms.

Activate Software and Parameter Defaults Software Activate the upgraded Software as instructed in “Activate Software” on page 11 of these instructions.
Parameter Defaults Activate parameter defaults as follows. 1. Under Network Services select Activate Locally... 2. Select Parameter defaults. 3. Select Parameter/Alarm Defaults sent by... 4. Select Activate. 127(Parameter defaults can only be activated with the same software revision that was running on the machine that exported the layouts. The following takes place when parameter defaults are activated:
A pop-up menu displays whether the activation was successful or not,
The system is restarted, The system switches to the newly activated parameter settings, and The parameter setup becomes the unit default. The original settings are overwritten and cannot be recovered.
Manually Enter Alarm Graph Setup Manually re-enter the alarm graph settings at each Solar 9500.
