Figure 1-1 CONTOURAâ 370 bed The power driven functions of height, backrest angle, tilt angle and leg elevation are operated by simple push button controls. There are separate handsets for the patient and carer; the carer’s handset also allows control of tilt angle. The bed has an attendant control panel (ACP) from which the power driven functions can be individually disabled. Operation of the bed by the patient is thus at the discretion of the carer. The electrical actuators consist of a screw and nut assembly driven by a 24V d.c. motor and gearbox. Power for the actuators is derived from an a.c. power supply.

OPERATION
2.1
Brakes and Steering
At the foot of the bed is a pair of linked brake pedals that operate on all four castors. When the pedals are in the middle position, the brakes are free and all four castors are able to rotate and swivel. When the pedals are pushed down, the brakes are applied on all four castors. When the pedals are raised, one head end castor is engaged so that it cannot swivel. The bed can then be steered by pushing from the foot end.

Folding Safety Sides (where fitted)
To lower the safety sides: Hold the top rail near the foot end just in front of the hinge (1). Pull the operating knob (2) and lower the side towards the foot end of the bed (3). As the side begins to lower, release the operating knob. 3 1

To raise the safety sides: Lift the top rail until the operating knob automatically “clicks” into its locked position at maximum height.
WARNING Ensure that the locking mechanism is securely engaged when the safety side is left in the upright position.

Bed Extension (where fitted)
To extend the bed: Apply the brakes. Use the control handset to raise the mattress platform to maximum height. Unscrew the two clamp knobs (1) on the underside of the mattress platform. Pull out the bed extension as far as it will go (2). Tighten both clamp knobs firmly (3).

Bedstripper (where fitted)
The bedstripper, which is used for supporting clean linen when the bed sheets are being changed, is located at the foot of the bed. Pull the bar away from the bed as far as it will go.

Kneebreak Angle Adjustment
The kneebreak angle can be manually adjusted whenever the thigh section of the mattress platform is raised. Lift the mattress retaining bar (7) to release the ratchet mechanism, then lower it until the calf section is at the required angle. Slightly lift the mattress retaining bar again to re-engage the ratchet mechanism and lock the calf section in position.

Emergency CPR Release To lower the backrest in an emergency, lift the CPR release handle (1) at the side of the bed. Some downward force may be required at maximum elevation, after that the backrest (2) will lower under the patient’s weight.
WARNING The backrest can fall quickly. Keep hands clear to avoid trapping.

Drainage Bag Rails
Two rails are provided for holding drainage bags, located below the seat section on either side of the bed. Attach suitable drainage bags to the hooks provided on the rails.

Power Operation
2.8.1 General
The bed is provided with power driven adjustment of bed height, backrest angle, leg elevation and tilt. When a push button is pressed, the appropriate bed function will operate until the push button is released or the limit of travel is reached. The Autocontour button operates both backrest and leg elevation simultaneously. Auto-Contour

2.8.2 Control Inhibit (using the ACP)
By using the Attendant Control Panel (ACP), mounted below the seat section on the left-hand side of the bed, the nurse can disable the push button controls and thus prevent operation of the bed. On the ACP is a rotary lockout switch for each bed function. To prevent the patient from making an adjustment, disable that particular bed function by turning the lockout switch so that the pointer is horizontal.

The tilt controls are located on the Nurse handset. Push and hold the appropriate button until the desired tilt position is obtained, or the limit of travel is reached. When returning from a tilted position, the bed will automatically pause when it reaches the horizontal. If tilt is applied with the bed at bottom height, the mattress platform will rise before tilting. Similarly, if the mattress platform is tilted and the bed is driven to bottom height, the mattress platform will level automatically before bottom height is reached.
2.8.4 Backup Battery
The backup battery is automatically switched on if the bed is disconnected from the power supply. Battery life is limited and is intended for short-term use only. To ensure the battery is kept in a fully charged condition, and prevent damage to the battery, the bed must be connected to the power supply at all times during normal use.

OPERATIONAL MAINTENANCE
3.1
General
The equipment has been designed to be virtually maintenance-free between service intervals. The degree of periodic cleaning and maintenance necessary will be determined by use and condition. Examine the bed for obvious signs of damage. If found take appropriate remedial action.
WARNING Disconnect the bed from the mains power supply before carrying out cleaning procedures. 3.2
Cleaning
Wearing suitable protective clothing, clean all surfaces with a disposable cloth soaked in a neutral detergent and hand hot water. Start by cleaning the upper sections of the bed and work along all horizontal surfaces. Work methodically towards the lower sections of the bed and clean the wheels last. Take extra care to clean areas that may trap dust or dirt. Rinse with clean water and dry with disposable paper towels. Allow the cleaned parts to dry before replacing the mattress. 3.3
Disinfecting
After cleaning the bed as described above, wipe all surfaces with sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) at a concentration of 1,000 parts per million (0.1%) of available chlorine. In the case of pooling body fluids, e.g. blood, the concentration of NaDCC should be increased to 10,000 parts per million (1%) of available chlorine. Refer to Huntleigh Healthcare’s Customer Infection Control procedures. Caution Do not use abrasive compounds or pads. Do not use phenol-based disinfectant solutions.

4
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
The following preventive maintenance checks and procedures should be carried out every 12 months. All service and repair activities must only be carried out by properly qualified and trained persons approved by Huntleigh Healthcare. Disposal of product and components should be compliant with local regulations.
WARNING Before starting any maintenance activity, disconnect the bed from the electrical power supply. If the backup battery is fitted, the bed will still operate when the handset buttons are pressed unless the function has been disabled on the ACP. Avoid skin contact with lubricants. Gloves and protective clothing should be worn when carrying out maintenance work. 4.1
General
Examine the bed for obvious signs of damage. Make sure that all nuts, bolts and other fastenings are secure and not missing. Examine all flexible cables for cuts, abrasions, kinks or other deterioration. Check the mains plug and cable for damage. If the mains plug or cable is damaged, they must be replaced as a complete assembly. Under no circumstances should the integral moulded plug be replaced with a rewireable plug. 4.2
Castors and Brakes
Check the brakes for efficient operation. Check that the steering lock operates effectively. Poor braking or steering performance indicates that one or more castors require adjustment or replacement. 4.3
Backup Battery
If, when the bed is operated using the batteries a beeping sound is heard, this indicates a low charge condition. The bed should be reconnected to the 4-1
746-440-3 01/07
mains power supply for a minimum of 24 hours, in order to recharge the batteries. Every six months, the condition of the batteries should be checked using the following procedure: 1. Ensure that the bed has been connected to the mains power supply for 24 hours. 2. Disconnect the bed from the mains power supply. 3. Apply a load of 80kg to the mattress platform. 4. Raise and lower the mattress platform, from minimum to maximum height, three times. 5. If the bed does not operate satisfactorily in step 4, perform steps 1 to 4 again. If the bed again fails to operate satisfactorily, the batteries are not holding sufficient charge and should be replaced. Refer to Chapter 7, Servicing Instructions.
