GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1
DESCRIPTION The Heater Unit HU 35 works on the principle of heat conduction to the bloodstream via an impervious membrane of an oxygenator. In the HU 35, water is heated up in the water tank. This water is electronically regulated and pumped continuously by a centrifugal pump. The HU 35 has self-closing couplings so that tubes can be connected and disconnected while the unit is in operation. The required temperature can be set to between 33°C and 39°C, enabling body temperature to be maintained. The HU 35 monitors the internal water level, the difference between setpoint temperature and actual temperature of the water circuit, the external power supply and operational safety. It generates alarms in the event of malfunctions. Various displays on the front of the HU 35 indicate the status.

INDICATIONS The Heater Unit HU 35 acts as a heat supply in order to maintain the patient’s body temperature via a MAQUET PLS oxygenator or other oxygenators as part of extracorporeal circuits.

SIDE EFFECTS / CONTRAINDICATIONS There are no side effects and no known contraindications when the Heater Unit HU 35 is used for the intended purpose.

Notice Important or explanatory information. 2.2
PRECAUTIONS WARNING! The HU 35 may only be used by qualified medical staff who have been trained in the use of this system and have sufficient experience of perfusion applications. Before putting into operation, make sure that both the HU 35 (power cord, housing, couplings, etc.) and the applied part (oxygenator) are in proper working order. The difference in height between the HU 35 and the oxygenator must not be more than one meter. Observe the automatic function test when switching on the unit and, if the unit is used continuously, carry out the test at least once daily. While the unit is in operation, check the flow and water level regularly on the HU 35. Only operate the HU 35 with a sufficient water level. Do not kink the tubes. Do not touch the tubes with pointed or sharp objects. To ensure adequate ventilation, do not cover the ventilation slots on the base and back of the unit. Observe the ambient conditions (Ö “Ambient conditions”, page 26). Do not operate the HU 35 in the presence of flammable gases. Do not position any other electronic equipment on or next to the HU 35. If this cannot be avoided, check before use that the HU 35 is functioning normally. Only operate the HU 35 with the MAQUET PLS oxygenator or other oxygenators and their respective original accessories as part of extracorporeal circuits. The oxygenator used must meet the following requirements: – Maximum pressure: 0.34 bar – Maximum temperature: 40°C Carry out maintenance in accordance with the User's Manual. WARNING! Monitor the patient's body temperature while the unit is in use.

WARNING! The HU 35 has been electromagnetically tested in accordance with IEC 60601-12 and complies with this standard (Ö “Electromagnetic compatibility”, page 312). The user is responsible for ensuring that the clinical environment complies with the limits prescribed in IEC 60601-1-2. This requires taking the following precautions: Observe normal precautions regarding relative humidity and the electrical conductivity of clothing in order to minimize the build-up of electrostatic charges. In the immediate vicinity of the HU 35, do not use any equipment that emits high frequencies such as cell phones and HF devices. Exceeding these limits may impair the device's efficiency and safety.

START-UP WARNING! Hazard due to the combination of water and electricity Fill the HU 35 before connecting it to the external power supply.
4.1
SETTING UP HU 35 WARNING! The surface must be capable of supporting the weight of the unit (approx. 9 kg). Operate the HU 35 in a horizontal position with a maximum permissible slant of 3°. Otherwise the water level indicator may not show the true level. The HU 35 should be positioned level with or slightly higher than the oxygenator (max. height difference 1 m) due to the water pressure in the circulation system. To ensure adequate ventilation, a clearance of at least 20 cm must be maintained behind the HU 35 and also sufficient space above it. Do not operate the HU 35 close to heat sources (spotlights, direct sunlight, heating elements, radiant heaters, etc.).

TABLE-TOP OPERATION The HU 35 is designed for use on a table top, i.e., it can be placed on any flat, horizontal, hard surface that can support the weight. For safety reasons, do not operate the HU 35 on the floor.
OPERATION ON SPRINTER CART The HU 35 can be operated on the SPRINTER CART or SPRINTER CART XL from MAQUET (Ö SPRINTER CART/SPRINTER CART XL User's Manual). For this you require a clamping mount (Ö 8 “Accessories”, page 22).
WALL MOUNTING ON SLIDE RAIL The HU 35 can be attached to standard slide rails (25 × 10 mm). For this you require a clamping mount (Ö 8 “Accessories”, page 22). Secure the clamping mount to the rear of the HU 35 using two screws. Secure the HU 35 to the rail using the star screw of the clamp mounting.
TUBING HOLDER (OPTIONAL) You can attach the optional tubing holder to the righthand side of the HU 35 using the knurled screws located there.

4.2
WATER LEVEL CHECKING THE WATER LEVEL Check the water level before switching on the HU 35 and connecting the tubes. The indicated water level must be between the minimum and maximum markings, and preferably at or near the maximum marking. The difference between the two markings is 0.7 liter. Top up the water under any of the following conditions: The water level is below the minimum marking; The status display shows [WATER LEVEL] or [TEMP >= 40°]. The water level is below the maximum marking and the tubes and the oxygenator have not been filled. FILLING WITH WATER WARNING! Disconnect the HU 35 from the external power supply before you open the screw cap. If water overflows when filling the HU 35, dry the unit thoroughly. The HU 35 must be completely dry before you connect it to the external power supply and switch it on. CAUTION! Fill the tank with soft tap water (up to a water hardness of approx. up to 7°dH). Depending on the water quality (e.g., containing lime), it may be necessary to use distilled water instead. Change the water every two weeks (Ö 7.1 “Maintenance”, page 20). 1 Switch off the HU 35 and disconnect it from the power supply. 2 Unscrew the cap from the filler neck (e.g., using a coin). Make sure that you do not lose the cap's sealing ring. 3 Fill the HU 35 until the water level is just below the maximum marking. MAQUET recommends using a funnel. 4 De-air the system (Ö “De-airing the system”, page 15).

DE-AIRING THE SYSTEM 1 Unscrew the cap from the filler neck (e.g., using a coin). Make sure that you do not lose the cap's sealing ring. 2 Check that the HU 35 is completely dry. Connect the HU 35 to the power supply and switch it on. 3 Let the HU 35 run with the filler neck open for two minutes so that air in the circuit can escape. After de-airing, air bubbles may be visible in the flow display. This does not mean that there are air bubbles in the tubing system. 4 Put the cap back onto the filler neck and screw it hand-tight. WARNING! After de-airing, always operate the HU 35 with the screw cap fitted. 4.3
CONNECTING TUBES AND OXYGENATOR WARNING! Observe the User's Manual for the oxygenator used. CAUTION! The HU 35 is not designed for continuous use without an oxygenator. If the HU 35 is operated for an extended period (> 1 hour) without an oxygenator, adequate heat conduction is not possible. The HU 35 triggers the corresponding alarms. You can connect the tubes and the oxygenator before or after switching on the HU 35. 1 Attach the tube couplings to the coupling pair on the HU 35. Make sure that the locking mechanism on the tube coupling engages properly in the coupling nipple on the HU 35 so that the tube cannot be inadvertently detached. 2 Connect the other end of the tube to a Hansen coupling on the oxygenator, using an adapter. 3 If you connect empty tubes and oxygenator, check the water level (Ö “Checking the water level”, page 14) and if necessary top up (Ö “Filling with water”, page 14). 4 De-air the system (Ö “De-airing the system”, page 15).

Check the water circulation on the flow display with the HU 35 switched on. Water circulation is sufficient if the individual indicators in the flow display cannot be made out (Ö “Checking the flow rate”, page 18). RELEASING THE COUPLINGS You can detach the couplings while the HU 35 is still switched on. 1 To release the coupling, press on the small metal plate on the tube coupling. Be sure to release the oxygenator coupling at the adapter to prevent water escaping. There may be a small amount of water between tube and coupling, which will drip once the coupling is released. Brief dripping does not indicate a leak or fault. 4.4
POWER SUPPLY AND SWITCHING ON WARNING! After de-airing, always operate the HU 35 with the screw cap fitted. Check the HU 35, tubes and oxygenator for damage before starting up (Ö 2 “Safety”, page 8). Precautions before starting up Before you start up the unit, refer to the following sections: Setting up HU 35 (Ö 4.1, page 12) Water level (Ö 4.2, page 14) Equipotential bonding conductor The equipotential bonding conductor enables the electrical device to be directly connected to the equipotential busbar of the electrical installation, in addition to the protective ground conductor in the power cord. This reduces the risk of excessive enclosure leakage currents. For details concerning the correct setting up of medical electrical equipment, please refer to the IEC 60601-1-1 standard. 1 Connect the equipotential bonding cable to the equipotential connection and the equipotential busbar. Ensure that functional and suitable equipotential bonding conductors and cables are used (e.g., conforming to DIN 42801). 2 Connect the HU 35 to the external power supply with the power cord supplied. 3 Switch on the HU 35 at the on/off power switch.

The HU 35 will automatically perform a function test after being switched on. This takes a few seconds. 4 Check that all the alarms and displays are activated as described (Ö “Function test”, page 17). If the function test does not proceed as described, switch off the HU 35 and have it tested by Customer Service. 5 After the function test, the HU 35 automatically starts temperature control mode if the setpoint temperature is between 33°C and 38°C. – At setpoint temperatures above 38°C, the HU 35 issues an acoustic alarm and displays the following message: [SET VALUE >38°C RELEASE KEY >38°] To confirm a setpoint temperature above 38°C, press the release key. The HU 35 starts temperature control mode. If the actual temperature is lower than the setpoint temperature, the status display shows [WARMING-UP TIME]. When the setpoint temperature is reached, the status display shows the heat output in watts ([HEAT EMISS. … W], Ö 5.3 “Heat emission”, page 19). Important The HU 35 does not have a cooling function: the HU 35 does not actively lower the water temperature to a setpoint temperature that is lower than the actual temperature. Cooling is passive. FUNCTION TEST The HU 35 performs a function test when it is switched on or if the "Function test" key is pressed. This takes a few seconds. Check that all the alarms and displays are activated as described: A short acoustic alarm indicates that the power failure alarm is operational. All the digits of the temperature indicators are displayed ([88.8]). The alarm lamp lights up. The status display shows the message [FUNCTION.TEST]. An acoustic alarm is generated.

At the end of the function test, the status display shows the following message: [FUNCTION.TEST OK]. WARNING! If the function test does not proceed as described, switch off the HU 35 and have it tested by Customer Service. 4.5
DISPLAY LANGUAGE You can change the language of the messages in the status display. 1 Switch on the HU 35. 2 Press the "Alarm pause" key until the status display shows the current language. 3 Press the "Increase setpoint temperature" key repeatedly until the status display shows the desired language. After approximately 10 seconds, the HU 35 returns to the original operating status and uses the language last displayed.

APPLICATION
5.1
FUNCTION AND SAFETY CHECKS WATER LEVEL WARNING! Only operate the HU 35 with a sufficient water level. Check the water level in the HU 35 – both before and after switching on with the oxygenator connected (Ö “Checking the water level”, page 14). CHECKING THE FLOW RATE Check the water circulation on the flow display before using the unit and at regular intervals during use. Water circulation is sufficient if the individual indicators in the flow display cannot be made out. CARRYING OUT THE FUNCTION TEST When the unit is used for extended periods, carry out the function test at least daily. 1 Press the "Function test" key while the unit is in operation.

2 Check that all the alarms and displays are activated as described (Ö “Function test”, page 17). If the function test does not proceed as described, switch off the HU 35 and have it tested by Customer Service. 5.2
SETTING THE TEMPERATURE You can adjust the setpoint temperature using the two arrow keys. The setpoint temperature display shows the temperature you have set. For setpoint temperatures above 38°C, press the arrow key and release key simultaneously. Important The HU 35 does not have a cooling function: the HU 35 does not actively lower the water temperature to a setpoint temperature that is lower than the actual temperature. Cooling is passive.
5.3
HEAT EMISSION The status display shows the heat in watts ([HEAT EMISS. … W]) which is output to the environment and the oxygenator. The amount of heat supplied to the oxygenator is always less than the displayed heat emission. The more efficient the heat transfer of the oxygenator, the more heat is transferred to the patient. Important Heat can only be transferred from the oxygenator to the patient if the water temperature in the oxygenator is greater than the temperature of the patient’s blood. The potential heat emission is directly proportional to the difference between blood temperature and water temperature.

CLEANING AND DISINFECTION SURFACE OF THE UNIT WARNING! Switch off the HU 35 and disconnect it from the external power supply before you begin cleaning and disinfection. Do not allow liquid to penetrate the unit. The HU 35 must be completely dry before you connect it to the external power supply and switch it on.

CAUTION! For all surfaces and parts, use only disinfectants based on aldehydes, ammonium components or alcohols which are suitable for ABS plastic, PVC and PU. Preferably avoid using disinfectants based on phenol derivatives, as they reduce the service life of plastics. WATER TANK Disinfect the water tank when changing the water (Ö “Changing the water and disinfecting the system”, page 20).

MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY CHECKS
7.1
MAINTENANCE CHANGING THE WATER AND DISINFECTING THE SYSTEM WARNING! Disconnect from all oxygenators before carrying out this procedure. Observe the User's Manual for the disinfectant used. Disconnect the HU 35 from the external power supply before opening the screw cap. If water overflows while your are filling the HU 35, dry the HU 35 unit thoroughly. The HU 35 must be completely dry before you connect it to the external power supply and switch it on. CAUTION! MAQUET recommends using only the disinfectant Disifin HU 35, which is available as an accessory. If you intend to use a different cleaning or decontamination method, first consult MAQUET. Change the water in the water tank at least every two weeks and disinfect the HU 35 and tubes as follows: 1 Switch off the HU 35 and disconnect it from the power supply. 2 Drain off the water completely: – Put a container under the HU 35 or place the HU 35 by a sink or other means of drainage. – Unscrew the filler neck cap (e.g., using a coin).

– Tip the HU 35 backwards 45° and screw off the cap of the outflow point to drain off the water. Make sure that you do not lose the sealing rings of the two caps. – Tip the HU 35 further back, to an angle of 90°, to completely empty the HU 35 unit. – Close the outflow point again. 3 Disinfect the system: – Fill the unit with water to just below the maximum marking. – Pour the disinfectant Disifin HU 35 into the tank, following the instructions supplied with the disinfectant. – Connect two water tubes to the HU 35. Connect the ends of the tubes with the adapter supplied with the HU 35. – Connect the HU 35 to the power supply and switch it on. – Ajust the setpoint temperature to 37°C and run the HU 35 for two hours. – Switch off the HU 35 and disconnect it from the power supply. – Drain off the water completely (Ö step 2). 4 Flush the system: – Fill the unit with water to just below the maximum marking. – Connect the HU 35 to the power supply and switch it on. – Ajust the setpoint temperature to 37°C and run the HU 35 for 30 minutes. – Switch off the HU 35 and disconnect it from the power supply. – Drain off the water completely (Ö step 2). 5 Flush the system again with fresh water (Ö step 4). 6 Fill the HU 35 with fresh water and de-air it (Ö “Filling with water”, page 14). 7 Put the cap back onto the filler neck and screw it hand-tight. WARNING! After de-airing, always operate the HU 35 with the screw cap fitted. VENTILATION SLOTS Check the ventilation slots regularly, at least every six months, for dirt. Remove any external dirt as far as possible.

TUBE COUPLINGS The sealing rings (O-rings) on the couplings become dry and brittle with age. Apply a thin film of silicone paste to the rings at least every six months. 7.2
SAFETY CHECK A safety check (SC) must be carried out every 12 months. The operator is responsible for ensuring that the SC is performed correctly. The SC may only be performed by MAQUET Cardiopulmonary AG or an authorized person.

TROUBLESHOOTING WARNING! Repair work may only be carried out by MAQUET or MAQUET-authorized service personnel. CAUTION! Opening the HU 35 voids the guarantee. Possible causes of alarms and remedies can be found in Section Ö 10 “Messages”, page 23. Fault

MESSAGES Alarm situations always trigger a visual and acoustic signal. The status display shows corresponding fault messages (except for the power failure alarm).

HIGH-PRIORITY ALARMS High-priority alarms cause the HU 35 to shut down all functions. You cannot disable the alarm. You must switch off the HU 35. Message

Water level too low or no water, resulting in water temperature of 40°C or higher The HU 35 switches the heater and pump off automatically. Important: Too low a water level prevents adequate water circulation; it may result in damage to the unit, and cause the HU 35 to malfunction. Switch off the HU 35. Leave the HU 35 off for 30 minutes. Top up the water and de-air the HU 35 (Ö “Filling with water”, page 14). Switch the HU 35 on again. If the HU 35 repeats the alarm, stop the unit HU 35 and have it tested by Customer Service.

Causes/Remedies
[ALARM TEST FAIL ->CALL SERVICE]
Fault during automatic or manual function test Switch off the HU 35. Leave the HU 35 off for one or two hours. Switch the HU 35 on again. If the HU 35 repeats the alarm, stop the HU 35 and have it tested by Customer Service.
[TEMP <= 32° CHECK UNIT], Temperature display [-- -- --]
Water temperature below the measuring range Switch off the HU 35. Move the HU 35 to a warmer location. Leave the HU 35 off for two hours. Switch the HU 35 on again. Important: Make sure that the specified storage and ambient temperature is maintained in order to prevent damage to the HU 35.

LOW-PRIORITY ALARMS In the case of low-priority alarms, you can disable the acoustic alarm for ten minutes using the "Alarm pause" key. The visual alarm continues (alarm lamp and message in the status display) for as long as the alarm condition is fulfilled. Message

Difference between actual temperature and setpoint temperature is more than 1°C The alarm is disabled for a specified length of time if you switch on the HU 35 or change the setpoint temperature. If you have connected or disconnected tubes during operation, there is no defect. Do not operate the HU 35 continuously without tubes and oxygenator. If the HU 35 repeats the alarm when tubes and oxygenator are connected, stop the HU 35 and have it tested by Customer Service.
