Description of the Appliance
starjet is a compact water jet, air, and powder dental device (air polisher) used in the dental sector for prophylaxis and tooth polishing treatments. starjet can be used with powders of various particle sizes and guarantees a constant, efficient jet of powder and simple, reliable use. The starjet operating principle is based on the mechanical action obtained by a mechanical jet of powders accelerated by a flow of compressed air. The kinetic energy thus impressed on the particles is dissipated when it hits the enamel
1.2.1
surface, thus producing a delicate but efficient polishing action. The action is completed by a jet of water which, by means of the vacuum created around the nozzle, forms a bell-shape around the main flow, thus producing a double effect: to prevent much of the rebound and the leakage of the powder jet and continuously wash the treated area, dissolving the powder itself. starjet can be supplied with different quick and fixed couplings for connection to the turbine of the dental unit.
Eligible Patient Group
This medical device is designed to be used with the following patient groups: •
Children;
•
Adults;
• •
Adolescents;
This medical device can be used on patients of any age, weight, height, gender, and nationality, where applicable.

INSTALLATION
starjet, in order to operate must be connected to a dental unit equipped for water and air distribution. NOTE: The device does not require any electrical and/or electronic connections to be made. starjet is supplied with a specific adapter for the main couplings to the dental unit turbine (see Chapter 4.1 on page 10). CAUTION: Use starjet only with the specific coupling for the relative turbine. Connecting starjet to a connector not intended for use in combination with the dental unit may damage the device. The dental unit to which starjet is connected must be a medical device that complies with general and applicable product regulations for the specific category of dental unit, and in general, satisfy the following standards: • • •
ISO 7494 Dentistry – Stationary dental units and dental patient chairs; ISO 9168 Dentistry – Hose connectors for air driven dental handpieces; ISO 60601-1 Medical electrical equipment – Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance.
For starjet to operate correctly, the air and water pressure values must be within the intended range of use, specifically: • •
For water, from 1.0 to 3.0 bar (from 1000 hPa to 3000 hPa), max 40 °C;
For air, from 2.0 to 3.0 bar (2000 hPa 3000 hPa).
CAUTION: To ensure proper and longlasting performance, ensure the air flowing from the dental unit is thoroughly dry and filtered. Moreover, it is essential to ensure that the air pressure is between 2.0 and 3.0 bar inclusive, measured at the point of the connection between the device and the dental unit. NEVER use excessive air pressure. Increasing the air pressure does not correspond to an increase in performance; to the contrary, the device may become damaged or fail to work properly. To ensure the correct operation of the device, it is necessary to check: • • •
The “spray” water supply coming from the turbine;
The air supply coming from the turbine; The presence of powder.
CAUTION: Check that the dental unit to which starjet is connected satisfies the specified requirements. The device must be installed in a suitable place allowing its comfortable use.
4.1
Couplings for Turbine
starjet can be connected to the turbine of the dental unit using fixed or quick couplings.
4.1.1
Fixed Couplings for Turbine
The fixed couplings with which starjet can be supplied are: • •
10
Midwest - ISO 9168 Type 3: Standard 4-hole; Borden - ISO 9168 Type 1: Borden 2-hole.
To connect the device to a fixed coupling, screw in the screw terminal. Unscrew the screw terminal to disconnect the device from a fixed coupling.
Installation 4.1.2
Quick Couplings for Turbine
The quick couplings with which starjet can be supplied are listed in Table 2 on page 11. To connect the device to a quick coupling, fully insert the connector until you hear a “click”. To disconnect the device, follow the instructions in Table 2 on page 11. Quick Coupling

CAUTION: The polisher nozzle and turbine connector must be perfectly dry. Any humidity may cause the obstruction of the air/powder circulation channels. CAUTION: Do not expose the appliance to direct sunlight or sources of UV light. CAUTION: The appliance can be transported but must be handled with care when moved.
USE
Suitable powder and polisher nozzles must be used depending on the type of treatment to be carried out: •
For applications with specific supragingival powders distributed by Mectron, it is necessary to:
•
For applications with specific subgingival powders distributed by Mectron, it is necessary to:
1. Set the adjustment ring to prophy;
1. Set the adjustment ring to perio;
3. Insert the 120° polisher nozzle on the handpiece.
3. Insert the desired polisher nozzle on the handpiece (120° or PERIO);
2. Fill the powder container with the appropriate powder without exceeding the indicated maximum level;
2. Fill the powder container with the appropriate powder without exceeding the indicated maximum level;
4. In case of subgingival applications and therefore when using the PERIO polisher nozzle, the single-use SUBGINGIVAL PERIO TIP must be inserted.
CAUTION: The SUBGINGIVAL PERIO TIP can only be used with the PERIO polisher nozzle.
CAUTION: With the PERIO polisher nozzle, use only specific subgingival powder distributed by Mectron.
WARNING: The SUBGINGIVAL PERIO TIPs are single-use sterile. The SUBGINGIVAL PERIO TIPs are supplied sterile and for single use. They must be used on one patient only during a single application, after which they must be removed and disposed of.
CAUTION: Before filling the powder container with the selected powder, make sure it is clean and free of any powder residue from the previous treatment.

Use 5.1
Safety Requirements Before and During Use
WARNING: Contraindications. Patients on a sodium restricted diet must not receive treatment with sodium bicarbonate powders. WARNING: Contraindications. Patients who suffer from serious respiratory problems such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, etc., must not receive prophylaxis treatment unless otherwise indicated by their doctor. WARNING: Contraindications. Patients wearing contact lenses or glasses must remove them prior to receiving treatment with the air polisher. WARNING: Contraindications. Do not direct the air/powder/water jet towards the eyes. Failure to comply with this indication may cause serious eye damage. It is advisable for all involved persons to wear safety goggles (patient, hygienist, and dentist). WARNING: Contraindications. It is advisable for the dentist and dental hygienist to use a protective face mask to limit the inhalation of powder. WARNING: Contraindications. Do not aim the air/powder/water jet towards composites, fillings, and bridges. Failure to comply with this indication may case damage thereto. WARNING: Contraindications. Do not use the device near areas subject to recent dental extraction and in traumatised/ damaged areas (or areas nearby) due to the risk of emphysema.
WARNING: Checking the condition of the device before treatment. Before every treatment always check the perfect operation of the appliance and efficiency of the accessories. If operation anomalies are observed do not carry out the treatment. Contact an Authorised Mectron Service Centre if the faults concern the device. WARNING: Use only original MECTRON accessories and spare parts. WARNING: Infection, water and air circuit control. First use: All parts and reusable accessories (new or returned from an Authorised MECTRON Service Centre) are delivered in NON-STERILE conditions and must be treated before each use, according to the instructions provided in Chapter 6 on page 20. Subsequent uses: After each treatment, clean, disinfect and sterilise all parts and reusable accessories according to the instructions in Chapter 6 on page 20. CAUTION: Do not attempt to unscrew the cap of the powder container when it is pressurised. CAUTION: Make sure the powder container is perfectly dry. Any humidity may cause the channels to become clogged. WARNING: During the intervention on the patient, do not perform any maintenance tasks on the system.
WARNING: Contraindications. Do not aim the air, specific supragingival powder, or water jet onto the soft tissues or inside the gingival sulcus. Failure to comply with this prescription can cause a gingival tissue emphysema (emphysema of the mucous and/or subcutaneous). For this type of application, use only specific subgingival powder.
