About this manual The BRM2 Brain Monitor Technical Manual The BRM2 Brain Monitor Technical Manual (the “Technical Manual”) contains information required to assemble, maintain and service the BRM2 Brain Monitor, manufactured by BrainZ Instruments Limited, of Auckland, New Zealand. Detailed operating instructions are provided in the “Onscreen Help System” of the BRM2 Brain Monitor and the “BRM2 Brain Monitor Reference Manual”.

Assembling the BRM2 Brain Monitor These instructions show how to assemble the mobile workstand (“roll pole”) supplied with the BRM2 Brain Monitor, attach the Monitor unit and connect the components.
Some parts of this procedure require two people.
Assembling the roll pole The BRM2 Brain Monitor is supplied in two large cartons: •
a slim box containing the roll pole components (base, casters, pole, spring and stabilizing weight).
•
a wide box containing the Monitor and its associated components, documentation, accessories and a smaller box enclosing the basket, basket mounting clamp, basket locking bracket and monitor tilt mechanism.
Stage 1: Unpack the components 1.
Unpack the components of the roll pole onto a large flat work surface. Keep the contents of each carton separate.
2.
Check the cartons carefully for tools, fastenings and accessories (normally packed in small plastic bags). Do not remove the plastic wrapping around the roll pole spring. The roll pole components include a metal cord hook designed to mount at the bottom of the stabilizing weight. This device is not suitable for use with the BRM2 Brain Monitor and should be discarded.

Stage 2: Assemble the base 1.
Remove the plastic wrapping from the base and place the base upside down on a clear, flat work surface, to reveal the mounting holes for the casters.
2.
Push the five casters into the mounting holes on the five legs of the base.
3.
Stand the stabilizing weight on its end, with the large hole downwards. Tear the plastic wrapping away from the upper part of the weight.
4.
Locate the bolt and washer with its 8 mm Allen wrench.
5.
Place the base over the stepped end of the stabilizing weight (with the casters upwards) and insert the bolt (with the washer fitted) through the center hole in the base.
6.
Tighten the bolt with the 8 mm Allen wrench provided.
7.
Turn the base over and check that it sits steadily on the casters. If it is unsteady, reseat the casters. Remove the remaining plastic wrapping from the stabilizing weight.

Stage 3: Install the pole 1.
Remove the plastic wrapping from the pole.
2.
Insert the white threaded end of the pole into the top of the stabilizing weight and screw it tightly into the weight. This forms the lower section of the pole.
3.
Without removing the plastic wrapping from the spring, insert the spring into the lower section of the pole.

Stage 4: Attach the accessory basket 1.
Using the 4 mm Allen wrench provided, remove the 25 mm screws from the basket mounting clamp and refit two of the 40 mm screws also supplied into one side of the clamp. Notice the small, black stop pins in the slots on each side of the clamp.
2.
Fit the clamp around the lower section of the pole, with the stop pins at the bottom. Fit the other two 40 mm screws so that the clamp is held loosely in place and each screw is inserted equally.
3.
Position the clamp so that its lower edge is 300 mm (12”) above the stabilizing weight. Tighten the four fixing screws until the clamp is just held in place (approximately ¼-turn). Overtightening the fixing screws will cause the pole to bind or jam at the clamp.
4.
Slide the basket into the front slot of the clamp, so that the plastic mounting shoe rests on the stop pins.
5.
Fit the U-shaped part of the basket locking bracket over the top of the basket mounting shoe, so that the threaded legs of the locking bracket protrude under the clamp assembly. Fit the extruded locking plate over the threaded legs from underneath. The raised lip on the locking plate should be upwards and towards the basket. Secure the locking plate with the two locking bolts and 7 mm wrench provided.

Mounting the components Stage 1: Attach the monitor Step 5 of this stage requires two people for safe execution.
The Monitor, Isolation Unit and Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) are all packed in the same carton. 1.
Unpack the Monitor and remove any plastic wrapping. Place the Monitor face down on a clean, smooth work surface.
2.
Attach the monitor tilt mechanism to the back of the Monitor, using the 2.5 mm Allen wrench and five countersunk screws provided.
3.
Screw the upper section of the pole into the large threaded hole in the tilt mechanism. Take care that the tilt mechanism are correctly aligned, to avoid damaging the threaded upper section of the pole.

Insert one of the M5 dome screws provided into the back of the tilt mechanism, and tighten it until it locks the pole thread, using the 3 mm Allen wrench.
5.
This step requires two people. Hold the Monitor so that the upper section of the pole is positioned directly above the spring. With a second person assisting, use the weight of the monitor to help compress the spring. Guide the spring down into the pole as the monitor is lowered. Tighten the locking collar.
Stage 2: Attach the cord hook and isolation unit 1.
Attach the Cord Hook to the underside of the tilt mechanism, inserting the 25 mm M5 dome screws into the two threaded holes provided, using the 3 mm Allen wrench.
2.
Orient the Isolation Unit so that the power indicator is to the left, when viewed from the rear of the Monitor, and attach it to the back of the monitor mounting plate, using the 3 mm Allen wrench and the two remaining M5 dome screws packed with the tilt mechanism.

Stage 3: Connect the components Using the figure below as a guide, connect the: •
RS232 Serial Cable from the Isolation Unit to the ISOLATION SERIAL IN connector on the Monitor
•
DC Power Cable from the Isolation Unit to the ISOLATION POWER connector on the Monitor
•
UTP Serial Cable from the Isolation Unit to the Data Acquisition Unit
•
AC Power Cable to the Monitor.

Assembly of the BRM2 Brain Monitor is now complete.
Before first use: •
Check for normal operation. See Checking for Normal Operation on page 10.
•
Check the date and time shown on the Main Menu screen and adjust if necessary.
•
Perform electrical safety tests. See Electrical Safety Testing on page 16.

Maintenance This section covers regular maintenance of the BRM2 Brain Monitor, including cleaning instructions. All users of the BRM2 Brain Monitor should read this section.
Routine maintenance After each patient 1.
Discard the disposable Neonatal Sensor Set.
2.
Clean the components and cables of the BRM2 Brain Monitor according to our recommendations. See Cleaning on page 9. 57H
Weekly, or after each patient 1.
Archive recently-recorded data files onto the Compact Flash card provided with your BRM2 Brain Monitor. See the “BRM2 Brain Monitor Reference Manual” or the “BRM2 Onscreen Help System” for more information.
2.
Use a laptop PC, or a desktop PC in conjunction with the USB Card Reader provided with your BRM2 Brain Monitor, to transfer the archived data files onto a CD-ROM or file server for long-term storage.
Monthly 1.
Use the File Manager to review all data files in the BRM2 Brain Monitor’s internal storage that have been previously archived. See the “BRM2 Brain Monitor Reference Manual” or the “BRM2 Onscreen Help System” for more information. Note that the selected file’s archive status is shown beneath the Internal Storage file list.
2.
Delete those files that have been previously archived and transferred to permanent storage, or are no longer required.
Unused files must be deleted regularly in order to free up space on the BRM Brain Monitor’s hard drive.
Six-Monthly The following checks should be carried out every six months, or according to the protocol for checking electrical equipment at your healthcare institution. 1.
Visually check to ensure: -
The AC power cord or attachment plug is not damaged.
-
Connecting cables are not damaged or worn.
-
Screws used to fasten the Monitor or other accessories to the roll pole have not become loose.

The Allen screw underneath the base has not become loose.
-
The lower section of the roll pole is secured firmly to the stabilizing weight.
-
The equipment has not been dropped, and shows no other obvious signs of damage.
Check for normal operation of the BRM2 Brain Monitor. See Checking for Normal Operation on page 10. 58H
3.
Check the date and time shown on the Main Menu screen and adjust if necessary.
4.
Perform electrical safety tests. See Electrical Safety Testing on page 16. 59H
If any component of the BRM2 Brain Monitor is missing or damaged, replace the appropriate part and check the BRM2 Brain Monitor for normal operation before using it again. See Checking for Normal Operation on page 10. 60H
Do not use malfunctioning equipment.
After a change in local time After a change in local time (for example, the start or end of daylight savings time), you should adjust the BRM2 Brain Monitor's system time. See the “BRM2 Brain Monitor Reference Manual” or the “BRM2 Onscreen Help System” for more information..
Calibration The BRM2 Brain Monitor is factory-calibrated, and does not require periodic re-calibration.

Cleaning The components of the BRM2 Brain Monitor are designed to withstand normal hospital cleaning protocols, however they must not be subjected to any form of sterilization procedure. Please note the following cleaning instructions and warnings. Monitor (including Touchscreen) and Isolation Unit Clean the Monitor and Isolation Unit by wiping with a soft cloth dampened with detergent and water. Data Acquisition Unit and Connecting Cables Normal cleaning: Clean by wiping with a soft cloth dampened with detergent and water. After use on an infected baby: Clean by wiping with a soft cloth dampened with 70% v/v isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Allow to dry naturally. Disconnect the BRM2 Brain Monitor from the AC supply outlet before cleaning. Use only a damp cloth for cleaning (do not use liquid or spray detergents). Never pour liquid into any opening in any part of the BRM2 Brain Monitor, or submerge any component in liquid. This may cause fire or electrical shock. Do not autoclave any component of the BRM2 Brain Monitor, as serious and irreversible damage may result. Do not clean with concentrated bleach, corrosive chemicals or abrasive cleaning compounds. The Monitor, Data Acquisition Unit or Isolation Unit must not be opened except when being serviced by an Authorized Service Representative, using written instructions from BrainZ. The surface of the Monitor touchscreen is resistant to the following substances (at room temperature): •
Acetone
•
Methylene chloride
•
Isopropyl alcohol
•
Hexane
•
Ammonia-based glass cleaners
•
Turpentine
•
Mineral spirits.

Servicing This section provides the information required to service the BRM2 Brain Monitor, including troubleshooting guides.
Equipment required for servicing To perform the servicing procedures described in this section, you will require these items of equipment: •
Multimeter
•
A selection of screwdrivers
•
Test Plug (supplied with the BRM2 Brain Monitor)
•
Test Sensor Lead (supplied with the BRM2 Brain Monitor)
•
Allen Wrenches (supplied with the BRM2 Brain Monitor)
•
A non-USB (PS2) computer keyboard.
Testing procedures Checking for normal operation The BRM2 Brain Monitor is supplied with a Test Plug that can be used to terminate each EEG channel for test purposes. This procedure performs a full system test of the BRM2 Brain Monitor. If personal accounts have not been set up on your BRM2 Brain Monitor, use the user name “NICU”, with password “NICU”. To check the BRM2 Brain Monitor for normal operation: 1.
Turn the AC Supply Switch on.
2.
If the Log in screen appears, enter a valid user name and password into the appropriate fields. Touch Login to log in to the BRM2 Brain Monitor.
3.
When the Main Menu screen appears, touch Assess Patient to display the New Patient screen.
4.
When the New Patient screen appears, enter a fictitious Hospital ID and Patient Name, and touch OK to display the Signal Status screen.

Insert the Test Plug into the DAU, in place of the Sensor Set. Make sure the arrows are aligned to prevent damage to the Test Plug. Expected result: The Sensor Signal Left and Right graphs should display low level “flat” patterns, and the impedance numbers and sensor indicators should read as shown in the following table: Sensor

If the results described in the previous paragraph are not obtained: 1.
Follow any recommendations displayed on the Signal Status screen.
2.
If the problem persists, contact an Authorized Service Representative.
Touch Cancel on the Signal Status screen to end the check for normal operation.

Checking the test plug The test plug should be checked if you suspect that it may be damaged or faulty. To check the test plug: 1.
Identify the pin numbers.

Checking the cable connectors Cable connectors should be checked if you suspect that they may be damaged or faulty or as part of Troubleshooting. Checking the DAU flying lead To check the DAU Flying Lead connector: 1.
Unplug the Data Acquisition Unit from the BRM2 Brain Monitor.
2.
If necessary, disconnect the Neonatal Sensor Set and plug in the Test Sensor Lead.
3.
Remove the four rubber pads on the bottom of the DAU case (one in each corner). These have a sticky bottom and will peel off to expose four screws. Keep the pads for later use.
4.
Remove the four screws and retain them for later use.
5.
Turn the DAU over and carefully remove the case top.
6.
Using a multimeter, test the resistance values as below:

If OK, replace the case top, screw down the four corners of the DAU and place the rubber pads back over the screws.
Checking the sensor extension cable Use of the Sensor Extension Cable is not recommended for most applications.
The Sensor Extension Cable is an accessory, and is not supplied with the BRM2 Brain Monitor. To check the Sensor Extension Cable: 1.
If necessary, disconnect the Sensor Extension Cable from the BRM2 Brain Monitor. Plug the Test Sensor Lead into the Sensor Extension Cable.

Identify the pin numbers on the black, male connector using the diagram below:

Checking the DC power cable Later BRM2 Brain Monitor models do not require a DC Power Cable.
To check the DC Power Cable: 1.
Unplug the DC Power Cable from the Isolation Unit, but leave the other end plugged into the Monitor.
2.
Turn on the monitor AC Supply Switch.
3.
Using a multimeter, test the voltage by inserting the negative probe into the end of the DC Power Cable and placing the positive probe against the outside of the cable. The expected value is 4.5 to 5.5 V.

Checking the UTP serial cable The UTP Serial Cable is a straight through cable with all wires connected. To check the UTP Serial Cable: •
Check for continuity using a multimeter.

Electrical safety testing Electrical safety tests should be carried out according to the protocol for checking electrical equipment at your healthcare institution. The BRM2 Brain Monitor is supplied with a Test Sensor Lead that can be used for testing procedures.
