Giraffe Display Repair Addendum For future reference, add to your Giraffe OmniBed or Incubator Service Manual. The existing electro-luminescent display used in the Giraffe Incubator and Giraffe OmniBed accounts for a significant portion of the material cost for the product. This old technology display is also becoming increasingly hard to source (lead times are 15+ weeks) and further cost increases are expected. The Giraffe Incubator and OmniBed have been redesigned to include a new display that has a lower cost and is widely available. This new design has replaced the previous design on all production units going forward. The following repair procedures and illustrated parts are to be used in place of the existing service manual content for the new display components. The contents of this addendum will be incorporated into the service manuals in the next revision.
Conventions in this Addendum A Warning statement is used when the possibility of injury exists.
SENSITIVE TO ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE CAUTION An Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Susceptibility symbol is displayed to alert service personnel that the part(s) are sensitive to electrostatic discharge and that static control procedures must be used to prevent damage to the equipment.

Repairing the Display Note: Reassembly for all procedures in this section is the reverse of those provided, unless otherwise noted. 1. If you are planning to remove or replace the bezel, touch panel, or digital encoder, then raise the canopy to its highest position, power off the unit, and unplug the unit. Note: All other replaceable display assembly components are accessible without moving the canopy. 2. Using a 2 mm hex key, remove the four button-head screws and lock washers that secure the back panel to the display module. Remove the back panel.
3. To remove the display driver board, use a 5.5 mm nut driver to remove the four KEPS nuts that secure the board to the standoffs.

5. To remove the LED display board, use a 2 mm hex key to remove the two button-head screws and washers that hold the board in place. Then pull the right side of the board until it is approximately 60 degrees from the mounted position. It may be necessary to rock the board back and forth several times to release it from the self locking standoffs on the left side of the board.

Unlock the display data cable connector on the display interface board by flipping the locking mechanism (brown door) toward you and pull the cable out and away from the connector. Disconnect the display backlight connector. The backlight connection may be different depending on which of the three display types is installed. Working several times around the board, gently pull or pry the board off of each self locking standoff, until the board is free.
Note: Metal contacts go toward the board. 7. To remove the EL display, remove the three KEPS Nuts that hold the display mounting bracket in place. Lift the display mounting bracket and EL display as a unit and place on an ESD work surface. To disconnect the display data cable from the EL display, slide the locking mechanism (black) away from the connector and remove the cable.
Note: Metal contacts go toward the board. Note: During replacement, align the metal display bracket tab with the slot in the display cage. Also, the yellow switch on the interface board should be set based on the manufacturer of the display. For details, refer to “EL Display Service Kit” on page 9. 8. Consider removing the four standoffs to make the next step easier.

Warning: Metal edges on the display bracket may be sharp. Important: During replacement, take note of the manufacturer of the display in the service kit. The yellow switch on the interface board should be set based on the manufacturer of the display. For details, refer to “EL Display Service Kit” on page 9. 10. To remove the bezel, first remove the encoder knob by pulling firmly as shown. The standoffs that hold the back cover also secure the bezel to the front of the module housing. Use a 6 mm wrench to remove the standoffs. Remove the bezel.
11. To replace the touch panel, it may be advisable to remove the cage. If you choose to not remove the cage, skip this step and proceed to step 12. For each side, do the following: Slide the decorative strips up about ½" in the groove on the outside of the upright to access the screw that secures the lower upright end cap. Use a 2.5 mm hex key to remove the screw, then remove the cap. Slide the decorative strip down to access the screw that secures the upper upright cap and remove the screw and decorative strip. Lift the top inner and outer cap up and away from the display cage just

12. Peel the old touch panel off the display cage, be sure to remove all adhesive residue from the cage before installing a new Touch panel. Caution: Once the membrane panel has been applied, it can not be repositioned without damage. 13. Remove the protective backing from the new touch panel. Do not allow the adhesive on the back of the new touch panel to come in contact with any surface. While keeping the adhesive backing from contacting the Display Cage, carefully align the two holes in the touch panel with the alignment pins on the Display Cage as shown. Firmly press the adhesive backing against the Display Cage, working out any bubbles that may have formed.

EL Display Service Kit The EL Display Service Kit (M1182173) may include one of three possible displays. To distinguish between the displays, refer to the following photo and descriptions:
Table 2: Three Possible Displays Photo
Description The AUO displays have a sticker with the AUO logo visible inside the hole in the upper left corner on the back of the display. The AUO displays have a cable from the top left of the display, which will be connected to the lower connector on the interface board.
The Sharp displays say SHARP in lower left corner on the back of the display. The Sharp displays have a harness from the top left of the screen connected to the hinged connector in the upper left corner of the interface.
The Optrex displays are recognizable by the harness exiting from the bottom left corner of the display. This harness will be fed under the interface board to the lower connector on the interface board.
