M1128921 Revision U
1 Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Scope This service manual describes how to maintain, repair, and service the Panda and Giraffe Warmers that are used in hospital delivery rooms, hospital newborn nurseries, and neonatal intensive care units (NICU).
1.2 Intended users The intended users for this manual are biomedical engineering service providers of the hospital and GE service personnel.
1.3 User responsibility The device operates as this manual and related labels or inserts describe, when the supplied instructions to assemble, operate, do the maintenance, and repair the device are obeyed. You must periodically check the device. Do not use a defective device. Immediately replace all parts that are broken, missing, worn, damaged, or have contamination. If such repair or replacement becomes necessary, call or write to the nearest GE HealthCare Regional Service Center for service recommendations. Only GE HealthCare qualified personnel must repair the device and its parts according to the written instructions supplied by GE HealthCare. The user of the device is responsible for all malfunctions that occur because of incorrect use, incorrect maintenance, incorrect repair, damage, or change by a person other than GE HealthCare.
1.4 Introduction Infant radiant warmers provide infrared heat in a controlled manner to neonates who are unable to thermoregulate based on their own physiology. Infant radiant warmers may be used to facilitate the neonate’s transition to the external environment or to provide a controlled open environment. Radiant heat from an infrared heat source is focused onto the bed to warm the patient. The operator may select either the heater power (Manual Mode) or skin temperature (Baby Mode) control method. Depending on the control method selected, the heater is either regulated at the operator selected power level or the heater output is modulated to maintain the patient’s temperature at the value selected by the operator. The Panda and Giraffe Warmers are each offered in a bedded model: the Panda iRes Warmer and the Giraffe Warmer. The Panda Warmer also offers 2 non-bedded models: Freestanding and Wall Mount. The model type is indicated on the label and on the device’s splash screen.

1.4 Introduction
1.4.1 Freestanding and wall-mount warmer WARNING PATIENT INJURY HAZARD - HYPOTHERMIA OR HYPERTHERMIA Make sure that the bassinet is in the correct position when used with a freestanding or wall-mount warmer. A bassinet that is not in the correct position can make the patient too cold or too warm. • You must do the pre-use checkout procedure before you put the patient in the bassinet. Make sure the casters on the freestanding warmer operate correctly and are locked when used with the bassinet. • Use the instructions on the warmer to make sure the bassinet is at the correct height. A bassinet that is not at the correct position can make the patient too cold or too warm. • Mattress tilt can cause hot or cold areas in the bassinet. • Put the patient in the center of the mattress. Figure 1-1 Freestanding model The freestanding warmer is a movable device with which you can use a bed or bassinet.
WARNING PERSONNEL INJURY HAZARD Do not put more than 3 kg on each Freestanding warmer accessory rail.

Figure 1-2 Wall-mount model The wall-mount warmer is a stationary device that you can move a bed or bassinet below.
WARNING PERSONNEL INJURY HAZARD Do not put more than 1.5 kg on each wall-mount warmer accessory rail.
1.4.2 Resuscitation system There are 2 different types of resuscitation systems that can be integrated into the device: T-piece and Bag and Mask. The integrated resuscitation system supplies the basic equipment that is required for pulmonary resuscitation of infants. Pulmonary resuscitation includes the necessary procedures to clear the airway and supply oxygen, air/oxygen mixtures, or manual ventilation to the infant. These are clinical procedures that represent the established standard of care.*1 Resuscitation may be necessary if an infant cannot breathe sufficiently to supply oxygen to tissue or to remove carbon dioxide from the body. Alternative tools for ventilation must be available. Do not use the integrated resuscitation system on unattended infants. The integrated resuscitation system includes: • Venturi suction device • 2 medical gas flowmeters • Airway pressure manometer • Peak Inspiratory Pressure (PIP) control knob (T-piece resuscitation system only) If your device has an air/oxygen blender with high-pressure yokes, at 1.5 times the rated supply pressure, the device will internally vent the source gas to maintain blender performance. NOTE Some older model devices can possibly not have an air/oxygen blender. There are no inlet pressure hoses directly connected to the inlets of the device. GE does not supply the inlet pressure hoses.

1.5 Features
1.5 Features For information about the scale, refer to Giraffe™ and Panda™ Scale (Shekel*) Service Manual.
1.5.1 Heater head and radiant heater All Giraffe and Panda devices have the same heater head to contain the radiant heater. Because of the small size of the heater reflector and its compound elliptical shape, specially made for this device, the heater head is very compact compared with other warmers currently on the market. This compact size keeps the area that the heater head fills above the bed surface to a minimum. With the area above the bed clear, the caregiver can monitor and treat the patient unobstructed. This open area also lets the head of an X-ray machine be put above the patient without moving the heater head or patient.
1.5.2 Optional integrated SpO2 and resuscitation modules All Giraffe and Panda devices can have the optional integrated SpO2 module. The Giraffe Warmer, Panda iRes Warmer, and Panda Freestanding Warmer can also have the optional integrated resuscitation module. The SpO2 option lets the caregiver monitor the blood oxygen level of the patient. The optional resuscitation module lets the caregiver administer forced breathing if it is required. The resuscitation module can have the traditional Bag and Mask technology or T-piece technology.
1.5.3 Hands Free Alarm Silence A different feature, unique in warmers, is the Hands Free Alarm Silence. This is a standard feature on all Giraffe and Panda Warmers. The Hands Free Alarm Silence operates the same as the Alarm Silence key for all alarms. With the Hands Free Alarm Silence, it is not necessary to touch a panel surface to silence alarms. The proximity sensor for the Hands Free Alarm Silence is found in the alarm light panel (non-IEC compliant devices) or the indicator light panel (IEC compliant devices). You can silence the alarm with a movement of the hand approximately 2 to 6 inches in front of the sensor. The Giraffe and Panda devices also have a standard Alarm Silence key as an alternative method to silence alarms.
1.5.4 ResusView™ Heart Rate (HR) option The ResusView™ Heart Rate (HR) option, available only on Panda iRes Warmers (bedded), measures the heart rate of the patient. When the HR option is enabled, a heart symbol flashes on the screen, the ECG waveform shows on the screen, and an audio tone operates at a speed that is consistent with the heart rate measurement.
