1 Important Safety Information 1.1

Definitions

This document contains important information relating to the safe and correct operation and maintenance of your StaminaLift Hospital Bed Mover. When reading this document, please be aware of the following definitions and conventions: This symbol indicates useful or important information to take note of. This symbol indicates important safety-related information. Failure to comply with this information may result in personal injury. Safety First The Unit must only be operated by persons who have been trained to use it by an Agent, and who have read and understood this manual. Failure to use the Unit in accordance with this Manual may result in personal injury or damage to property, and will invalidate the Unit‟s warranty (refer to Section 6.1).

To ensure safe use, always: Use the Unit in the environmental conditions specified in Section 2.6. Operate the Unit in accordance with Section 3. Charge the Unit in accordance with Section 3.5. Clean the Unit in accordance with Section 4.1. Dispose of components in accordance with Section 4.5. Wear closed shoes when operating the Unit. Keep hands and feet clear of the wheels. Keep hands and fingers clear of the lifting mechanism. Only use accessories approved for the unit by the Company. Read, understand and follow all instructions provided with the approved accessory. Have an assistant guide the bed when working in tight spaces or when the patient needs extra care during transportation. Lift/lower the bed carefully to avoid jarring the patient. Use the correct Battery Charger supplied with the Unit, specified in Section 2.5. Only connect Charger to a mains supply socket with protective earth. Park the Unit in an area where it cannot cause a hazard (e.g. tripping).

To prevent injury, never: Operate the Unit whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Operate the Unit without the protective guards attached and the safety devices connected. Use the Unit as a toy; e.g. by riding on it or allowing others to ride on it. Expose the Unit to rain, moisture or other liquids. Place objects filled with liquids on to the Unit. Expose the Unit to excessive heat or naked flames. Place heavy items on the Unit. Let anything fall into the interior of the Unit. Attempt to repair the product by yourself. All servicing must be done by an Agent in accordance with Section 4.3. Attempt to manually handle of lift the Unit during assembly or normal operation. If the Unit cannot be moved under its own power use appropriate lifting equipment with a Safe Working Load of at least 100 kg. Operate the Unit in the vicinity (less than 25 cm) of anaesthetic gases. Operate the Unit in an oxygen-rich environment. Attempt to lift items in excess of the maximum safe working load of the lift mechanism (250kg). Lower and release a bed while on a slope. Attempt the move objects in excess of 500kg. Leave the Unit unattended in an area accessible to untrained persons. Leave the Unit unattended while attached to a bed. Attempt to charge the Unit with another Battery Charger (other than the one supplied with the Unit), or attempt to use the supplied Battery Charger to charge any device other than the Unit.

Key Features

The Unit is a self-propelled device designed to move hospital beds under the control of a trained operator. Other hospital equipment may be moved with the use of approved accessories. The Unit has a number of key features which make moving hospital beds faster, easier, and ergonomically safer than manual moving methods, including: Simple operation – a single joystick controls forward, reverse, turning and lifting movements. Smooth start and stop functions. Quiet operation. An adjustable handle for operator comfort. A jaw that locks onto the bed to prevent inadvertent disengagement. Compact dimensions to allow operation in lifts. Automatic brakes that eliminate the possibility of freewheeling. Non-marking wheels to prevent damage to floor surfaces. Low maintenance.

Description Press briefly to turn the Controller on. All LEDs on the Information Gauge will light up briefly, then indicate the current battery charge (see below). Press again to turn off. All LEDs will turn off too. By default the Unit starts up in Drive Mode (allowing operator to move the Unit). To switch to Lift Mode (to operate the Lift Mechanism) press this button once. To return to Drive Mode press the button again. Press to warn others of the Unit‟s approach. Push the Joystick in the direction the Unit should travel. The Joystick is proportional, so pushing it further from centre will cause the Unit to increase speed. When released the Joystick will return to centre and automatically apply the brakes. Starting the Unit with the Joystick not centered will cause an error (see below). Push the Joystick forward (away from operator) to raise the Lift Mechanism. Pull the Joystick back (towards operator) to lower the Lift Mechanism. The LEDs on the Gauge provide feedback on the status of the Unit (see below). The Knob controls the maximum drive speed (Joystick farthest away from centre) of the Unit. Turn it clockwise to increase speed and anti-clockwise to decrease speed.

LED Status

Information Gauge Meaning Power is off. The Unit is programmed to automatically power off if it has not been used for 15 minutes.

All LEDs off. Power is on and batteries are fully charged. All LEDs on steady. Power is on and batteries are moderately charged. Recharge before undertaking a long trip. Red and amber LEDs on steady. Component Power Switch Charging Indicator

Description Flick up for “on”, down for “off”. Switch should illuminate when the Charger is powered. Illuminates red when battery is charging, green when charging is complete.

2.6

Batteries

The Unit uses sealed, maintenance-free batteries to provide power for use. These batteries are only to be replaced by an Agent.

2.7

Operating Conditions

The Unit is designed for operation and storage in a clean indoor environment with the following characteristics: Operating temperature of 10 – 40 OC. Operating relative humidity of 30% – 75%. O Storage and transport temperature of -5 – 65 C. Storage and transport relative humidity of 10% - 90%. Maximum slope of ±7°. The Unit may be used for brief periods outdoors, but must not be exposed to rain or be parked in direct sunlight. The Unit must only be operated on carpet or solid smooth surfaces such as concrete or linoleum. It must not be used on gravel, sand or other loose/uneven surfaces. 3 Operation 3.1

Preparation for Use The Unit must only be operated by persons who have been trained to use it by an Agent.

Before using the Unit, review the general safety instructions in Section 1.2. Ensure you are familiar with the key components and functions described in Section 2. Carry out a visual inspection of the Unit to ensure nothing is damaged or missing. Ensure any loose, faded or otherwise damaged warning labels are noted for repair immediately. Do not operate the Unit unless the correct warning labels are present. Switch off the Charger and disconnect it from the Controller‟s Charging Socket. Carefully coil and store the cables so they do not present a hazard to others. Adjust the Handle to a comfortable height. Check the Emergency Stop Button is pressed in. Switch on the Unit by pressing the Controller On/Off Button. Check that the battery has adequate charge. If not, charge according to the instructions in Section 3.5. Turn the Speed Control Knob fully anti-clockwise. Verify the Emergency Stop Button is working by slowly pushing the Joystick. The Unit should not move. If it does, the Emergency Stop Button is faulty; do not use the Unit. If the Emergency Stop Button is working, release it. Check that the brakes are working correctly by slowly pushing the Joystick. Once the Unit has started moving release the Joystick. The brakes should automatically apply and stop the Unit. If this does not happened the brakes are faulty; do not use the Unit. Check the Horn is working. If not report the fault. You may still use the Unit, but be extra careful during operation as you StaminaLift Operator‟s Manual OM050702-500 Issue BB

will not be able to provide audible warning of the Unit‟s approach. If the Unit is faulty, do not use it. Immediately report the fault to the relevant person in your organisation who will arrange to have the Unit repaired by an Agent. Follow your organisation‟s procedures to tag the Unit as faulty to ensure no other operators attempt to use it. Faults may be identified by: Visual inspection. Failure to pass pre-operation tests. Fault indication on the Controller‟s Information Gauge.

3.2

Basic Operation When not engaged with a bed, ensure that the Lift Mechanism is in its lowest position (illuminated Arm Down Indicator). If not, press the Drive and Lift Toggle Button, pull the Joystick until the Indicator illuminates, and press the Drive and Lift Toggle Button to return to Drive Mode. In tight spaces or busy areas operate the Unit at a low speed (Speed Control Knob fully anti-clockwise). Only increase the speed (Knob clockwise) where it is safe to do so. Push the Joystick in the desired direction of travel. Remember that the Unit speed will increase in proportion to the Joystick‟s distance from the centre position. Be aware that there will be a slight “ramp up” time for the Unit to reach the desired speed. Release the Joystick to brake. If at any stage the battery charge is low do not attempt to lift a bed but recharge immediately. When reversing, move the Handle to a convenient position to make it more comfortable to operate. When leaving the Unit, choose a location which is out of the way and make sure the Emergency Stop Button is pushed in to prevent inadvertent operation.

Do not drive over objects on the floor as this may damage the non-marking wheels. Where available, use corridor mirrors for checking around corners. Before entering a lift raise the Handle to the fully upright position. Be careful not to bump the emergency stop button by accident. During operation be fully aware of your surroundings and adjust your speed and operating behaviour accordingly. Situations to be prepared for include: Persons stepping out of doorways. Persons (especially small children) or objects behind you when reversing. Hearing-impaired persons not able to hear Horn. Tight spaces. Slopes.

3.3

Moving Beds When transporting patients with elevated sensitivity to minor collisions, care must be taken and beds must only be moved with a second operator to supervise movement at the foot of the bed. If one end of the bed is heavier than the other by more than 50% only lift the heavier end of the bed. Lifting the lighter end may cause the bed to disengage from the jaw on a slope. Only lower and release the bed on flat, level ground. Position the bed so that the Unit can engage with it, and so that there is adequate space to move it. Ensure the bed steering locks and brake locks are disengaged. Drive the Unit slowly into the centre of the bed head or foot end until the lift mechanism is touching the bed frame.

Change to Lift Mode and raise the Lifting Mechanism until the Jaw Mechanism secures the frame. Continue to lift the bed until the wheels are approximately 10mm clear of the floor. Change to Drive Mode. Before driving, ensure all the patient‟s peripherals (e.g. drips, monitors etc.) are attached to the bed and not on separate trolleys. When the bed has reached its destination change to Lift Mode and lower the Lifting Mechanism fully (until the Arm Down Indicator illuminates). Take care to lower the bed slowly for sensitive patients to minimize the impact. Switch back to Drive Mode and drive Unit out from under the bed.

3.4

Moving Large (over 280kg) Beds Large beds must only be moved with at least one assistant to the Unit operator. The beds must only be used with the Unit if attachment bars have been installed. Best performance is achieved by engaging the Unit at the foot of the bed. The assistant must guide the head of the bed. Little force is required as the Unit will drive the bed, but the assistant will be required to direct the bed, especially around corners and into tight spaces such as lifts. Due to the larger mass of the bed the Unit will drive at a slower speed than normal.

3.5

Storing and Charging Store the Unit in an area with restricted public access to avoid improper use, such as „joy riding.‟ Lock the controller (see Section 3.6) when appropriate.

For storage, turn the unit off using the On/Off button on the Controller. Fully depress the emergency stop button when not in use. When storing the Unit, ensure it is not left where someone can trip over it. It is recommended that the Unit is charged whenever it is not in use. The batteries cannot be overcharged, and frequent charging will prolong battery life. When the charge indicator is in the red, the batteries will need to be charged for 8 hours. With the Battery Charger turned off, insert the plug into the Charging Socket. Plug in and switch on Charger at the mains supply. Turn the Charger on and check that the Charging Indicator on the Charger is red. When the charging reaches approximately 80% charge, the Indicator will turn green. Leave Charger connected until ready for use. To check that the battery is fully charged, turn off Charger and remove connector for around 30 seconds then reconnect and turn on. If fully charged, the red LED should light momentarily then go to green. To isolate the Unit from the mains supply during charging switch off the Unit at the mains supply socket. Completely remove the Charger plug from the mains socket. Charging is only complete when indicated on the Battery Charger. The Information Gauge is not an accurate indicator of charge during the charging process. Driving of the Unit is disabled while being charged. Only use the Charger supplied with the Unit in a location away from patients. Use of other chargers may damage the Unit and invalidate the warranty. Always ensure the Charger is off when plugging it into or out of the Unit. Always connect Charger to mains supply with protective earth. Always ensure that the area surrounding the mains supply plug of the Charger is clear. Do not position the Unit or the Charger so that it is difficult to disconnect the mains plug.
