Safety information General Also refer to related Hewlett-Packard safety information in the appropriate HP manuals. See Related documentation on page 1-4.
Manufacturer’s responsibility GE is responsible for the effects of safety, reliability, and performance only if:
Assembly operations, extensions, readjustments, modifications, or repairs are carried out by authorized service personnel.
The electrical installation of the relevant room complies with the requirements of the appropriate regulations.
The equipment is used in accordance with the instructions for use.
Intended use The CARESCAPE Gateway is a server that provides outbound data to systems that are not components of the CARESCAPE Network MC or S5 network. The CARESCAPE Gateway provides near real-time streaming data in an XML format for vital sign data and waveforms from patient monitoring systems. The CARESCAPE Gateway also provides outbound vital sign data in an HL7 format from patient monitoring systems. The CARESCAPE Gateway provides ADT inbound information to minimize incorrect data entry. CARESCAPE Gateway also relays time adjustments from an NTP (Network Time Protocol) time source to the CARESCAPE Network Time Master to synchronize the clocks on CARESCAPE Network devices. The CARESCAPE Gateway is intended to electronically transfer data to and from medical devices. However, it is not intended to control any monitoring functions of the monitoring devices to which it connects, nor is it intended to be used in the

Introduction
monitoring of the patients connected to said devices. The server hardware itself operates unattended and is not located near the patient or caregiver. The CARESCAPE Gateway is a computer program that comes pre-installed on a server supplied by GE Healthcare. The typical "user" is an information system or application that resides outside of the monitoring network that needs this data (e.g., a CIS system). The CARESCAPE Gateway has no clinical user interface; the only userinterface is web-based and intended for administrators of the device.
Safety information Safety message signal words Safety message signal words designate the severity of a potential hazard. DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. NOTE shall be used for informational messages that do not pertain to a hazard. The order in which safety messages are presented in no way implies the order of importance. The following safety messages apply to the device’s entire system. Safety messages specific to parts of the system are found in the relevant section.
Danger safety messages No danger safety messages apply to this system.
Warning safety messages The following warning safety messages apply to this system. WARNING EXPLOSION HAZARD-Do not use this equipment in the presence of flammable anesthetics, vapors or liquids.

Introduction
WARNING INCORRECT CALCULATIONS- When a user of the monitoring equipment retrieves patient information and associates it with the patient being monitored, they should always confirm that the entered patient's information is entered correctly. Regarding calculations made by the monitoring equipment, this may include one or more of: height, weight, sex, and date of birth. Hemodynamic and oxygenation calculations are dependent on accurate patient height, weight, sex and age values.
WARNING INCORRECT ALGORITHMS, ARRHYTHMIA PROCESSING, AND CALCULATIONS BASED ON PATIENT AGE -After manually updating or automatically retrieving patient information from a network database and associating it with the patient being monitored, a user should always confirm that the entered patient’s date of birth matches the patient’s actual date of birth. Otherwise the appropriate age-related algorithms, arrhythmia detection, and calculations may not be applied.
WARNING LOSS OF FUNCTION/DATA LOSS - Be extremely careful not to assign the same IP address to two different devices on the network. Duplicate IP addresses will cause erratic system communication and data loss.
WARNING PERSONAL INJURY/EQUIPMENT DAMAGE-Observe the following guidelines associated with rack stability:
Ensure both the top and bottom of the rack are securely fastened to a suitable and substantial building support.
Ensure the rack weight is supported by the leveling jacks and that the rack leveling jacks are in contact with the floor.
If it is a single rack installation, ensure stabilizers are attached.
If it is a multiple rack installation, ensure the racks are tightly secured together.
Do not extend more than one component outside the rack at a time.
Read and follow rack mounting instructions in the appropriate HP documentation, packaged with the CARESCAPE Gateway. See Related documentation on page 1-4.

Introduction
WARNING PERSONAL INJURY/EQUIPMENT DAMAGE/SHOCK HAZARD-If the CARESCAPE Gateway is installed in a rack, observe the following guidelines associated with rack stability:
Ensure both the top and bottom of the rack are securely fastened to a suitable and substantial building support.
Ensure the rack weight is supported by the leveling jacks and that the rack leveling jacks are in contact with the floor.
If it is a single rack installation, ensure stabilizers are attached.
If it is a multiple rack installation, ensure the racks are tightly secured together.
Do not extend more than one component outside the rack at a time.
For more information about working with racks, refer to the appropriate HP ProLiant DL360 Server Setup and Installation Guide supplied on the Documentation CD-ROM.
WARNING SHOCK HAZARD-The CARESCAPE Gateway must not be located in the patient environment as a shock hazard may exist. The CARESCAPE Gateway is IEC 60950 classified equipment which may not meet the leakage requirements of patient care area equipment.
WARNING SHOCK HAZARD-The CARESCAPE Gateway and all peripheral equipment must be adequately grounded or a shock hazard may exist.
WARNING SHOCK HAZARD - After performing a safe shutdown, disconnect the power cord(s) from the wall outlet to remove power from the CARESCAPE Gateway. The on/off button on the front panel does not disconnect the CARESCAPE Gateway from AC power. Additionally, wait 40 seconds after disconnecting the CARESCAPE Gateway power cord from the wall outlet. The computer remains energized for a period of time after shutdown. If these precautions are not followed, the possibility of electrical shock exists.

Introduction
WARNING SHOCK HAZARD-Make sure that all power cords and all other cables are disconnected from the server before removing the cover. Severe electrical shock could result from not following this instruction.
WARNING SHOCK HAZARD/EQUIPMENT DAMAGE-If fluids are spilled on the CARESCAPE Gateway, shut down the unit, remove power and disconnect all components. Perform the maintenance procedures listed in this section and document the incident in the repair log. Do not use the CARESCAPE Gateway if it has been damaged by the fluid. Fluids spilled on the CARESCAPE Gateway can cause an electrical shock hazard and may damage the equipment.
WARNING SHOCK HAZARD/PERSONAL INJURY- Do not install the CARESCAPE Gateway in a patient care/caregiver area. It should be installed and located with other IT equipment, such as in a server rack or cabinet. For additional physical environment requirements, refer to the HP ProLiant DL360 G7 Server Maintenance and Service Guide. See Related documentation on page 1-4.
Caution safety messages The following caution safety messages apply to this system. CAUTION ACCURACY-If the data intended to be transferred is not available or the accuracy of the data transferred is questionable, the caregiver should access the data from the source device, such as the primary patient monitor for physiological data and the HIS for patient demographic information. The data provided via the CARESCAPE Gateway is not intended to be the sole source for patient data and is to be used in conjunction with the data at the patient monitor, central station, and the hospital's information systems. The primary patient monitor should always be referenced before making any patient care decisions.
