DESCRIPTION OF THE BASE STATION The Base Station is a docking station for the Vitalograph 2120. It belongs to the Vitalograph 2100 series of products. It is a hygiene station enabling connectivity to a range of peripheral devices.

Power Input
Connect the power supply that was supplied with the Vitalograph 2120 to the back of the Base Station. Note: use only the universal power supply (Cat. No. : 21001204) - the input range is between 98 and 264V AC (50/60Hz). If you already had a Vitalograph 2120 which had the older power supply (Cat. Nos. : 45030, 45031, 45032 or 45033) you will need to get the new universal power supply. Contact your local Vitalograph office or service agent for more information.

Connecting to the Vitalograph 2120 The Vitalograph 2120 can be connected to the Base Station by using the following procedure,
Do not push objects into the suction fan when in operation. Do not rub your fingers across the paper tear bar, it is sharp! Use only a power supply from Vitalograph (Cat. No. : 21001204).

Ensure the Base Station is switched on. Place the Vitalograph 2120 firmly into the docking area of the Base Station. To ensure that the 2120 is properly docked, the Docking Indicator should illuminate.
If you connect additional equipment (not produced by Vitalograph) to the serial interface port, it must conform to VDE0750 Part 1-1 regulations and to your EN specifications, e.g. EN60950 for data equipment, EN60601 for medical equipment. Non medical equipment must be kept outside the patient environment i.e. any area in which intentional or unintentional contact between the patient and parts of the system, or some other persons touching parts of the system, can occur. (Contact your distributor if you have any queries.)
The Base Station can be used as a docking station for the Vitalograph 2120 when used with Spirotrac®IV.
Connecting to Spirotrac IV

The Vitalograph 2120 can be connected to Spirotrac IV by using the serial cable (2120060) which is part of the 2120 packaging. Instead of connecting the power supply (21001204) to the 2120 serial cable, connect it directly to the Base Station - refer to section “Connecting To The Power Source”. Refer to the Spirotrac®IV User Manual for more instructions relating to the Spirotrac IV.

Use a new safety mouthpiece (Cat. No. 20242) for each subject tested. Use a bacterial/viral respiratory function testing filter (Cat. No. 28350) where patients have known or suspected respiratory infection, or where the patient is at risk. Replace daily the filter pad in the base station. Keep all surfaces dry to avoid sites for potential growth of micro-organisms.
SETTING UP THE BASE STATION After you have unpacked the Base Station from its box, connect it to the power source provided with the Vitalograph 2120. Place one of the new bacterial viral filter pads evenly on the fan guard. You can connect the Base Station at any time to the Vitalograph 2120 or Spirotrac IV, depending on how you wish to use it. Note: When you have unpacked the Base Station, leave it sitting at ambient temperature for one hour before using it. Ensure that the software reference on your Vitalograph 2120 is version 2.01 or greater and that your Spirotrac system is 4
Alternative Method The Vitalograph 2120 can be connected to Spirotrac IV via the Base Station, by using the serial cable (re-order no. 76062) which is connected directly between the Base Station and the PC serial port. To connect the serial cable, follow the instructions below:1. 2. 3. 4.
Ensure that the PC and the Base Station are turned off. Connect the 9 pin D type serial cable connector to the serial port on the Base Station. Connect the other 9 pin serial cable connector to the appropriate serial (Comm) Port on the PC. Ensure that the power supply is connected as described earlier in this chapter.

Refer to the Spirotrac IV user manual for more instructions relating to the transfer of patient information. 1.
Note: removal of the Vitalograph 2120 from its docked position during a data transfer will result in a Communication error in Spirotrac IV. If this happens both the Base Station and the Vitalograph 2120 will have to be reset. The units can be reset by turning them off and on again. The Base Station should be reset first.

USING THE BASE STATION Turning On the Base Station

Press down the on/off switch at the back of the Base Station. The Power Indicator on the front of the unit lights up when the Base Station is turned on. The fan will momentarily activate and the printer head will return to its standby position. This is normal operation.

Charging the Vitalograph 2120 The Vitalograph 2120 is always being charged when it is docked to the Base Station and when the Base Station is switched on. When the Docking Indicator is illuminated, it ensures that the connection between the Vitalograph 2120 and the Base Station is complete for charging. If the Vitalograph 2120 is disconnected from the Base Station and you wish to charge it: 1. 2.
There are two options for printing, using the Base Station. 1. 2.
The results on the Vitalograph 2120 can be printed to the thermal printer for informative, well presented reports. First, the correct printer driver must be selected on the 2120 by using the following procedure, 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
From the main menu, select SETUP. From the SETUP menu, select PRINTER. Using the S and T buttons, select the printer type Base Station. Ensure that the Vitalograph 2120 is docked to the Base Station. A good connection is indicated by the yellow LED indicator. Printing can now be carried out as per normal i.e. from the main menu, select PRINT (for further information, consult the Vitalograph 2120 literature).
Note: if your Base Station does not have the printer option, the Paper Out indicator will always be illuminated. Using an External Printer

The Base Station complies with EN60601-1-2 : 1993 but this does not guarantee that other equipment in the vicinity will not be affected by electromagnetic emissions from the Base Station. Similarly, other equipment in the vicinity may affect the operation of the Base Station. It is recommended that all equipment used near the Base Station complies with the relevant electromagnetic compatibility requirements for that equipment and to check before use that no interference is evident or disruptive. Ensure the Base Station is turned on. Dock the Vitalograph 2120 onto the Base Station and it is then being charged. It takes 16 hours to charge the Vitalograph 2120 completely from a fully discharged state. Note that you do not have to turn on the Vitalograph 2120 to charge it.
Print data from the Vitalograph 2120 to the Base Station printer -this is optional. Print data from the Vitalograph 2120 to a printer external to the Base Station.
Using the Base Station Printer

Ensure the cable provided with your external ‘parallel’ printer is connected to the parallel port at the back of the Base Station and to the printer. (You can refer to the diagram in the 'Turning On the Base Station' section.) The results on the Vitalograph 2120 can also be printed to an external A4 (or 8½ x 11 inch) printer. First, the correct printer driver must be selected on the Vitalograph 2120 by using the following procedure, • From the main menu, select SETUP. • From the SETUP menu, select PRINTER. • Using the S and T buttons, select the printer type that you will be printing to. • You will be asked whether you want to print via the Base Station - select Yes. The Vitalograph 2120 must be docked. Printing can now be carried out as per normal i.e. from the main menu, select PRINT (for further information, consult the Vitalograph 2120 literature).

Leave the Base Station connected and charging at all times. Leaving the Vitalograph 2120 docked on the Base Station will slowly discharge the battery if the Base Station is switched off.
Note : even if the Vitalograph 2120 is fully charged, the Docking Indicator will remain illuminated. If the battery is low on the Vitalograph 2120, a message will appear on its screen informing the user. If this message persists following charging with the Base Station, contact your local Vitalograph branch or service agent.
Using the Fan In the interests of hygiene, a small suction fan is provided with the Base Station to remove all traces of moisture from the breathing circuit of the Vitalograph 2120 to remove potential sites for the growth of micro-organisms. For this reason, it is recommended that the Vitalograph 2120 is docked between patients. The fan will activate for approximately 30 seconds. Important Notice: Care must be taken when using the Vitalograph 2120 during testing and docking it on the Base Station. Always ensure that the Vitalograph 2120 is in the main menu. >

Failing to do this will result in the Vitalograph 2120 registering a test as soon as the fan activates.

This also applies to the Vitalograph 2120 when it is used with Spirotrac IV. Ensure that the Vitalograph 2120 is out of remote mode i.e. in the main menu. This is achieved by simply exiting the test screen on Spirotrac IV if the test session is over, or by pressing the Preview icon if it is not required to end the test session.
MAINTAINING THE BASE STATION Replacing Paper in the Base Station Printer (optional) 1.

Fault symptom: Fan remains on at power up, even if the Vitalograph 2120 is not docked Possible cause: Faulty main PCB - contact support.
Remove the existing printer roll. Place the new printer roll into the recess. Feed the paper through the slot at the back of the printer mechanism, making sure the shiny side of the thermal paper is facing out.

If the contact points are not maintained, intermittent contact will be experienced between the Vitalograph 2120 and the Base Station. This will be evident by a flickering Docking Indicator.

It is important to frequently clean the five contact points on the back of the Vitalograph 2120. With constant handling of the Vitalograph 2120, these contact points will tend to get dirty.

Cleaning and Maintaining the Vitalograph 2120
In order to clean the contacts, simply use a cotton bud soaked in an alcohol base fluid ( e.g. propane). Paper Roll

by the user is recommended, particularly after dismantling or cleaning of the measurement system. National and international spirometry guidelines recommend at least daily accuracy checking of all types of spirometer, using a precision syringe.
Press the paper feed button for several seconds to feed the paper through the printer. Feed the paper through the paper exit slot on the printer door. Close the printer door while keeping the paper taut, ensuring that the paper is not folding back on the printer mechanism.
Note: if the printer runs out of paper during a printout, the Base Station will sit and wait until the new paper is fed through as described above. The Base Station will then pause for 5 seconds and reprint the last printout. If your Base Station does not have a printer, you will not be able to open the printer door - do not force it !
Replacing the Filter
Fault symptom : Printer Mechanism Failure Possible causes: (in probable order), • Vitalograph 2120 software reference - is this version 2.01 or greater (check ABOUT menu in SETUP) ? (if no - contact support). • Is paper feeding freely through printer mechanism ? • Is communications between Vitalograph 2120 and Base Station operating correctly i.e. is Docking LED illuminated? Is correct printer driver selected in Vitalograph 2120 ‘SETUP’ menu (‘Base Station’) ? • Nothing appearing on printout : paper could be inserted incorrectly . Fault symptom : Failure to print to an external printer (parallel communications) Possible causes: (in probable order), • Vitalograph 2120 software reference - is this version 2.01 or greater (check ABOUT menu in SETUP) ? (if no - update Vitalograph 2120 software). • Check printing with known good parallel cable.

GUARANTEE Terms of Guarantee Subject to the conditions listed below, Vitalograph Ltd. and its associated companies, (hereinafter called the Company) guarantee to repair or at its opinion replace any component thereof, which, in the opinion of the Company is faulty or below standard as a result of inferior workmanship or materials. The conditions of this Guarantee are: 1. This Guarantee shall only apply to hardware defects which are notified to the Company or to its accredited distributor within 1 year of the date of purchase of the equipment, unless otherwise agreed in writing by the Company. 2. Software (meaning computer software, or user installable modules) is guaranteed for 90 days from the date of purchase. 3. The Company warrants that the software when correctly used in conjunction with the hardware will perform in the manner described in the Company's literature and user manuals. The Company undertakes to rectify at no expense to the customer any software failure notified within the period stated above, provided that the failure can be recreated and the software has been installed and used in accordance with the user manual. Notwithstanding this clause, the software is not warranted to be free of errors. 4.
