Brakes and Steering
At each end of the trolley is a pair of linked brake pedals. Operating one pedal will operate the other three simultaneously. When the pedals are horizontal, the castors are free to rotate and swivel in any direction. When the pedals are pressed down, the brakes are applied on all four castors and the trolley is immobilised. When the pedals are lifted up, the fifth (steering) castor in the centre of the trolley is engaged. When the trolley is pushed in either direction, the steering castor will automatically engage in line to keep the trolley on a straight course. The trolley can be steered from either end by pivoting about the central castor. FREE

2 OPERATIONAL MAINTENANCE 2.1
General
The equipment has been designed to be virtually maintenance free between service intervals. Use and condition will determine the frequency of cleaning and maintenance. Examine the trolley for obvious signs of damage. If found take appropriate remedial action. Examine the mattress for cuts or other damage. If the outer skin is penetrated, discard and replace with a new part. 2.2
Cleaning
Cleaning
Wearing protective clothing, clean all surfaces with a disposable cloth soaked in a neutral detergent and hand hot water. Start by cleaning the upper sections of the trolley and work along all horizontal surfaces. Work methodically towards the lower sections of the trolley and clean the wheels last. Take extra care to clean areas that may trap dust or dirt. Rinse with clean water and dry with disposable paper towels. Allow the cleaned parts to dry before replacing the mattress.
Disinfecting After cleaning the trolley as described above, wipe all surfaces with Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) at a concentration of 1,000ppm (0.1%) of available chlorine. In the case of pooling body fluids, e.g. blood, the concentration of NaDCC should be increased to 10,000ppm (1%) of available chlorine. Caution Do not use abrasive compounds or pads as these may damage the paint finish. Do not use phenol-based disinfectants.

3 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE WARNING Before starting any maintenance work, ensure that the equipment has been adequately decontaminated. It is recommended that the following procedures should be carried out every 12 months. 3.1
General
Examine the trolley for obvious signs of damage. Make sure that all nuts, bolts and other fastenings are tight and not missing. Examine the mattress for tears, cuts or abrasions. Make sure the Velcro tapes are secure. Replace the mattress if it is damaged. 3.2
Castors and Brakes
Check the brakes for efficient operation. Apply the brakes and push the trolley. If any of the wheels rotate, the brakes are not working efficiently. Check operation of the steering castor. The brakes can be adjusted - refer to Section 6, Servicing Instructions. 3.3
Lifting Mechanism
Check the hydraulic system for leaks. If leaks are found, replace components as necessary. Refer to Section 6, Servicing Instructions. Check the operation of the lifting mechanism. A steady firm resistance should be felt over the full stroke of the ‘raise’ pedals. If the pedal pressure is variable or yielding, this may indicate the presence of air in the hydraulic system and can be remedied as follows: Raise the platform to full height and continue pumping for four or five pedal strokes then lower the platform fully. Repeat this action two or three times. If firm and steady pedal operation is not restored, investigate and replace components as necessary. Refer to Section 6, Servicing Instructions.

4 TESTING 4.1
General
The following serviceability tests should be performed before returning the trolley to use after service or repair, or if any function is suspect. Investigate any failure and take appropriate corrective action. These instructions should be read in conjunction with Section 1 Introduction, sub-section 1.3. Note: References to the left or right side of the trolley are when looking from the head end. 4.2
Height Variation
Operate the height control foot pedals and verify that the trolley platform rises and descends in a smooth and controlled manner over the full range of adjustment from 56 cm to 93 cm. Operate the tilt facility by both raising each end in turn and lowering each end in turn. Repeat this procedure with a load of approximately 76 kg (12 stone person) on the platform. Apply an evenly distributed load of 250kg to the platform and raise the platform to approximately mid position. Measure and record the platform height at both ends and ensure that platform is horizontal. Measure and record the platform height at both ends after 1 hour and again after 2 hours. The difference between the two sets of measurements should be no more than 5 mm. Examine the underside of the trolley for any sign of an oil leak. 4.3
Castors and brakes
Set the brake pedal to the horizontal ‘free’ position, push the trolley and verify that all four castors rotate and swivel easily. Raise the brake pedals to the ‘steer’ position and push the trolley from the head end until all castors are in line and trailing. Verify that the central steering castor is locked in line while the other four castors still swivel freely. Press the brake pedal down to the ‘brake’ position. Push the trolley and verify that all four main castors are locked.
4-1
746-168-5 10/2011
4.4
Safety Sides
Raise and lower the safety sides several times. Verify that the latches operate freely and that, when raised, the sides are firmly locked at maximum height. 4.5
Adjustable Backrest
Raise and lower the adjustable backrest and verify that the release mechanism operates effectively and that the angle of the backrest can be varied smoothly over the full range from horizontal to approximately 90°. If the movement is too easy (lacks power and is not well damped), it is possible that the gas spring is faulty. Set the backrest at an intermediate angle and verify that the backrest is firmly locked by applying strong downward pressure at the top edge. If the backrest moves it is possible that the gas spring is faulty or the release mechanism requires adjustment.
