5/32” Chuck Key
DESCRIPTION The Thorne Chuck Attachment is designed to be used with the Ergo™ and Advantage® Turbo Shaver Handpieces (Ref. D4200, D4240, D9920 and D9924). It is recommended that personnel study the console and shaver Instruction Manuals before attempting to clean, sterilize or operate the Thorne Chuck Attachment. The safe and effective use of this equipment requires the understanding of and compliance with all warnings, cautionary notices and instructions marked on the product and included in the manual and instructions for use.
INTENDED USE The Thorne Chuck Attachment is a key chuck designed to enable the drilling of holes in bone using drill bits and the Ergo or Advantage Turbo Shaver Handpieces. The 5/32” Thorne Chuck Attachment is intended for drill bits smaller than 5/32” in diameter.
PRECAUTIONS 1. The instruments are supplied non-sterile, and must be sterilized before the first use, and after every use. 2. Eye protection is recommended when operating equipment. 3. Use only associated ConMed Linvatec accessories and attachments. 4. Handle all equipment carefully. If an attachment is dropped or damaged in any way, return it immediately for service. 5. Prior to each use, inspect all equipment for proper operation and ensure attachments and accessories are operating correctly and are completely attached to the shaver handpiece. 6. The Thorne Chuck is factory sealed. Do not disassemble or lubricate. 7. Always check for bent, dull or damaged drill bits before each use. Do not attempt to straighten or sharpen damaged drill bits. 8. Periodically check the handpiece and attachment for overheating. If overheating is sensed, immediately discontinue use and return equipment for service. 9. Do not attach, insert or remove the attachment or drill bits while the handpiece is operating. Ensure the handpiece is off prior to installation or removal of the attachment or drill bits. 10. After each use, thoroughly clean the attachments. See “Cleaning and Sterilization” section below.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. To connect the attachment to the shaver handpiece, orient the alignment pins on the attachment with the two notches in the collet. Insert the attachment until the collet mechanism clicks into place indicating the attachment is properly connected. 2. To install a drill bit, open the chuck jaws wide enough to insert the bit. Be sure that the bit shank and chuck jaws are clean. Foreign particles may prevent the bit from lining up properly. 3. Insert the bit into the chuck. Center the bit in the chuck jaws and lift it about 1/16” off the bottom. Tighten the chuck jaws by hand to align the bit. 1
4. For the following step, ensure that the chuck key provided with the Thorne chuck is used. Use of a smaller or larger chuck key may prevent the bit from being properly tightened. 5. Place the chuck key in each of the three holes in the chuck, turning it clockwise. Tighten securely.
SPECIFICATIONS Duty cycle at 25° C ambient, no irrigation: 10 seconds on, 60 seconds off for 10 cycles. Then wait 30 minutes.
CLEANING AND STERILIZATION Cleaning Precautions 1. Follow universal precautions for protective apparel when handling and cleaning contaminated equipment. 2. Do not lubricate or immerse the attachment. 3. Do not clean the attachment with bleach, chlorine-based detergents, liquid or chemical disinfectants, or any product containing sodium hydroxide (i.e., INSTRU-KLENZ, Buell Cleaner). They will degrade the anodized aluminum coating. 4. Never clean in an ultrasonic cleaner or a combination washer/ sanitizer.
Cleaning Instructions 1. Remove drill bit prior to cleaning. 2. Remove attachment from shaver prior to cleaning. 3. Thoroughly scrub the attachment with a clean, soft brush dampened with a mild, pH-balanced detergent. Remove all traces of blood, debris and stains. Do NOT immerse equipment in soap solution or rinse water. 4. Rinse under running water to remove all traces of soapy water. 5. Flush all surfaces free of tap water with distilled water to prevent metal discoloration. 6. To dry, shake the equipment free of water and wipe the surfaces with a clean, lint-free towel.
STERLIZATION INFORMATION Steam sterilization is safe and effective for its use in sterilizing the Thorne Chuck attachment.
Sterilization Precautions 1. Do not sterilize with Ethylene Oxide (EtO). 2. Never sterilize in a washer/sterilizer, STERIS system, STERRAD system, CIDEX or comparable sterilization methods. 3. Do not “peel pack” attachment for sterilization. Sterilization in a sealed pouch traps moisture, which can cause damage. 4. Always sterilize attachments with the collet mechanism in the FULLY OPEN position. 5. DO NOT run attachments while warm. Allow adequate time for cooling prior to surgery. DO NOT IMMERSE in liquid or cover with a damp cloth to cool. Cool by exposure to room temperature.

Precaution: The recommended dry cycle must be run on the attachment every time it is sterilized. Failure to use a dry cycle may lead to reduced product performance or premature product failure. Operation of an attachment that is not completely cool and dry may decrease performance and/or reliability. NOTES: 1. Guidelines provided above do not guarantee sterility. Your institution is responsible for the normal sterility assurance validation. 2. Sterilization validation is based on AAMI guidelines (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation).
