User's Manual Ophthalmoscope Dear Customer, thank you for choosing a KaWe product. Our products are known for their high quality and longevity. This KaWe product meets EC standards 93/42/EWG (standards for medical products).
Unsuited use/Contraindication of the products: Any use other than that described here is not in accordance with the intended use of the unit. The manufacturer is not liable for any resulting damages.
Please read these instructions thoroughly and carefully before attempting to use this product and heed the given instructions for the care of the product!

Use: The ophthalmoscope is only to be used by authorized professional personnel. It is only to be used for the purpose of examining the fundus of the eye.

Purpose: KaWe ophthalmoscopes are used to examine the fundus of the eye using direct ophthalmoscopy. The detection of characteristic changes in the fundus of the eye enables the diagnosis of numerous diseases. The conceptual design of the KaWe ophthalmoscope allows for its use without pupil dilating medication. In this case, however, the patient’s field of sight is limited.

Warning: Proper operation of the instrument is only guaranteed when original KaWe vacuum bulbs are used. These bulbs ensure optimal illumination quality!

When handling the instrument, the examiner should try to keep the instrument as close as possible to his/her eye. If the examiner directs the light laterally into the fundal region at a distance from the subject of no more than 23 cm, a diagnosis can be made without the use of medication. 12

Operating the KaWe EUROLIGHT® E10: Insert the instrument head firmly onto the battery handle (8) and tighten the fastening screw. Turn on by pressing and turning the rotary switch to the left (7). The brightness can be regulated easily with the rheostat (7). Turn the instrument off by turning the switch back to the right to its original position. Be sure that the switch clicks when it is turned off. Change the batteries by removing the base cap (10). Use 2 X 1.5V “C” batteries.

Changing the bulb on the KaWe EUROLIGHT® E10: Loosen the fastening screw and remove the ophthalmoscope head from the handle. Unscrew the union ring (1). Remove the lamp holder (2) from the instrument head and replace the lamp. If necessary, clean the glass bulb (3) of the new lamp with alcohol. The glass bulb should be clean and free of fingerprints and grease. Insert the new lamp along with the lamp holder into the instrument head. Now, screw the union ring back on.
Operating the KaWe EUROLIGHT® E30: Push the instrument head onto the battery/charging handle (10) until it snaps into place. Turn on by pressing and turning the rotary switch to the left (9). The brightness can be regulated easily with the rheostat (9). Turn the instrument off by turning the switch back to the right 13
to its original position. Be sure that the switch clicks when it is turned off. Change the batteries by removing the base cap (12). Use 2 X 1.5V “C” batteries.
KaWe PICCOLIGHT® E50 / 2.5 V with threaded screw-on connector

Proper operation of the instrument is guaranteed when original KaWe battery/charging handles are used. The use of alkaline batteries and original KaWe rechargeable batteries is recommended. The illumination intensity of KaWe EUROLIGHT® ophthalmoscopes can be adjusted. Decreasing the brightness causes the pupil to dilate while at the same time, the patient is less strongly blinded.

Changing the bulb on the KaWe EUROLIGHT® E30: Remove the ophthalmoscope head from the handle by pressing down on the snap-on connector (8) and pull on the lamp to remove it from the handle (5). If necessary, clean the glass bulb (7) of the new lamp with alcohol. The glass bulb should be clean and free of fingerprints and grease. Insert the new bulb such that the side centring pin (6) rests in the groove in the bulb socket. The bulb must be inserted completely into the socket.

Turn instrument on and off using the sliding switch (9). Change the batteries by unscrewing the instrument head. On all models, the lens correction wheel can be used to correct the patient’s or doctor’s ametropia (vision abnormalities). Use 2 X 1.5V mignon “AA” batteries. Proper operation of the instrument is guaranteed when original KaWe 2.5V handles with 2 batteries are used. 14
Changing the bulb on the KaWe PICCOLIGHT® E50: Unscrew the ophthalmoscope head from the handle and pull the light source (5) out with your fingers. If necessary, clean the glass bulb (7) of the new lamp with alcohol. The glass bulb should be clean and free of fingerprints and grease. Insert the new bulb such that the side centring pin (6) rests in the groove in the bulb socket. The bulb must be inserted completely into the socket. Only connect the ophthalmoscope head to the handle when the bulb is in the head. If the bulb is not in place, a short circuit could occur.
KaWe EUROLIGHT® E16 / 2.5 V with plug-in connector with fastening screw Operating the KaWe EUROLIGHT® E16: Proper operation of the instrument is guaranteed when original KaWe battery/charging handles with 2, 1.5V, “C” batteries or KaWe 2.5V rechargeable batteries are used. Before using the instrument for the first time, charge the batteries completely. To charge the batteries, use the KaWe MedCharge® 4000 charging station. When inserting the batteries, be sure to heed the directional arrows on the rechargeable battery tag. Insert the instrument head onto the handle and secure it by tightening the fastening screw on the side. Turn the instrument on by pressing and turning the rotary switch to the left. The brightness can be regulated easily with the rheostat. Turn the instrument off by turning the switch back to the right to its original position. Change the batteries by removing the base cap.

Warning: Never immerse the ophthalmoscope in any kind of liquid and always prevent all liquids from penetrating into the housing! Do not allow the ophthalmoscope to have direct contact with the eye. Long operation times can cause the parts of the instrument near the light to become very hot. The ophthalmoscope is not intended for use during operations and therefore simple cleaning and/or disinfection with an alcohol-based surface disinfecting agent is sufficient. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents! The ophthalmoscope cannot be sterilized. KaWe ophthalmoscopes are to be used at room temperatures of not greater than 35° C. KaWe ophthalmoscopes are subject to special safety measures with regard to their electromagnetic compatibility. The operation of the KaWe ophthalmoscope can be influenced by portable and mobile high-frequency communication devices.

Cleaning preparation: No special requirements Manual cleaning: In order to avoid contact with dirt and dust, always store the ophthalmoscope in its packaging. A damp, soft and lint-free cloth can be used to clean the exterior of the instrument. The glass of the viewing window (1) can be cleaned when necessary with a cotton swab moistened with a small amount of alcohol. Please avoid applying pressure on the glass while cleaning! 16
Automatic cleaning: Automated cleaning is neither necessary nor possible.

Disinfection: To disinfect the ophthalmoscope, wipe it with a cloth that has been moistened with alcohol.
Further instructions, Maintenance, Storage: If necessary, the rechargeable batteries can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and then dried with a dry cloth. Avoid causing a short circuit.
Maintenance: Remove and replace damaged parts. If the instrument does not function properly, proceed as follows: 1. Replace the batteries, test functionality of instrument; 2. Replace the light bulb, test functionality of instrument; 3. Send the instrument in for repair.
The use of rechargeable batteries that are not explicitly approved for these units may cause explosions or leakages and the risk of fire, injuries and damage to surroundings. Should a rechargeable battery begin to leak and spilled substances come into contact with eyes, mouth, skin or clothing, immediately rinse the affected area with water and consult a doctor.
Inspection and operation test: Check to ensure the smooth operation of all movable parts such as the aperture selection and correction lens dials. Turn on the instrument. Ensure that the head is properly connected to the handle. For all instruments: visually check for damage and wear. Keep all electrical contact parts away from impurities.
Further maintenance instructions that will prolong the lifespan of the rechargeable battery: Please heed the following instructions: The non-observance of these instructions may result in the batteries quickly losing their full charging capacity.

With NiMH technology, a lazy battery effect can occur that is analogous to the classic memory effect associated with NiCd technology. It is triggered by the energy that has not been completely spent prior to recharging the battery. This effect can be nearly eliminated by completely discharging the battery from time to time and then by recharging it two or three times, preferably in quick succession. Subsequently, the battery will regain its full capacity. If the battery no longer provides the amount of energy necessary for powering the unit, immediately turn off the unit and charge the battery (in order to prevent it from losing its charge completely, which would result in the destruction of the battery).

fire. 10. Please only charge the rechargeable batteries in the appropriate battery charging unit. The charging unit and the compact adapter were designed especially for use with your unit. Please do not use them with other products or rechargeable batteries. All other products may cause the build-up of excessive heat or distortion and thus cause a risk of fire and electric shock. 11. Prior to disposing of the rechargeable battery, ensure that the contacts have been masked with adhesive strips or other insulating material in order to prevent their direct contact with other materials. Contact with other metallic material in rubbish bins may cause fire and explosion.
Please keep in mind that the rechargeable batteries can spontaneously discharge. When the batteries are not used or charged for a long period of time, a self-discharge may occur. In this case, the batteries’ capacity will be lost and they may become permanently defective. The manufacturer is not liable for any resulting damages. Therefore, when stored for more than one month, the batteries should be partially charged to approx. 50%. Please always respect the given charging time in order to prevent overcharging and the resulting destruction of the battery (the KaWe charging station KaWe MedCharge® 4000 has an integrated automatic shut-off). NiMH rechargeable batteries lose their capacity at low temperatures (as low as 0°C).

Risks and notice of possible danger: 1. Avoid short-circuiting the rechargeable batteries. 2. Keep the rechargeable batteries away from sources of heat and open flame. 3. Batteries are not to be immersed in water or salt water 4. Never try to disassemble or modify the rechargeable batteries or expose them to heat. 5. Avoid dropping the batteries and protect them against impact and shock as this may damage their housing. 6. Only use the rechargeable batteries and accessory parts recommended by KaWe. 7. When using a rechargeable battery for the first time, please make sure to charge it completely. 8. When charging is completed and the charging unit and the compact adapter are no longer in use, please disconnect them from the unit and the wall socket in order to avoid the risk of fire and other danger. 9. Do not cover the charging unit with any kind of material (tablecloths, carpets, bedclothes, pillows etc.) while operating the instrument. If you use the adapter for a long period of time, it may become overheated, become deformed or catch
