PRECAUTIONS
The BOOKWALTER® lMA Retractor Kit
Do not tighten the post coupling bolt unless the coupling is attached to the horizontal bar. The slight deformity of the circular opening that might result could affect the smooth fit between the post coupling and the bars.
Indications
If using monopolar electrosurgical equipment while using the BOOKWALTER® IMA Retractor Kit, consult the basic rules of usage concerning electrosurgery (see EN 60601-2-2), as well as the manufacturer’s instructions for use regarding specific warnings and conditions.
The BOOKWALTER® IMA Retractor Kit (catalog no. 50-4600) provides the tools to elevate and retract the sternum for efficient dissection of the internal mammary artery.
Description
Be sure to electrically isolate the patient from (high frequency leakage currents to) the operating table, in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the electrosurgical equipment.
The kit is comprised of the following components, which also may be purchased separately (Figure 1). Component Quantity A. Horizontal Bar 1 B. Post Coupling 1 C. Table Post 1 D. IMA Cross Bar 1 E. IMA Ratchet Mechanism 2 F. IMA Retractor Blade, 12 inch 2 G. IMA Storage Case 1
Catalog No. 50-4552 50-4554 50-4581 50-4601 50-4602 50-4603 50-4604
Ensure that the patient does not come into contact with metal parts that are earthed or that have an appreciable capacitance to earth (for example: operating table, supports), in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the electrosurgical equipment. Avoid small-area contacts with devices having a low impedance to earth at high frequencies, as unwanted burns may result.
Note: The Symmetry Surgical BOOKWALTER® IMA T-Cross Bar (catalog no. 50-4675) is available separately and can be used in place of the IMA Cross Bar (Figure 2). Please refer to “Attachment of the T-Cross Bar and Retractor Blades” in this manual for proper attachment.
Assembly Attaching the Table Post 1. Pull out the recessed lever, located at the top of the vertical post (Figures 3 and 4). Turn the lever counterclockwise to fully open the rail clamp.
Assembly of the system is simple, and the components are self-contained to make them easily accountable. If the instruments are to be used with the BOOKWALTER® Retractor, refer to the instruction manual that provides complete operating instructions and is supplied with the BOOKWALTER® Retractor Kit II (catalog no. 50-4542). Extra copies of this manual are available from Symmetry Surgical, Antioch, TN 37013 USA. To obtain extra copies outside the United States, contact your local Symmetry Surgical representative. If these instruments are to be used with any other retractor, please refer to that manufacturer’s instruction manual.
Note: Make sure the operating table side rail does not have extra material draped over it. The clamp of the table post should not hold more than two double thicknesses of cotton drape. 2. Attach the clamp over the drapes (Figure 5). 3. Tighten the clamp to secure the post by turning the lever clockwise. Attaching the Post Coupling and Horizontal Bar 1. Slide the horizontal bar into either of the holes in the post coupling. 2. Slide the post coupling and horizontal bar assembly over the top of the vertical post, to the desired position, and tighten the coupling

by turning its knob clockwise. Make sure the bar’s knob is on the side of the table post that is away from the patient.
